Yesterday when I was digging around for Halloween songs I ran into The Cure's version of the Joy Division classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart." It's kind of hard to cover Joy Division, but really, how can you go wrong with The Cure?

The Cure "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

I always found The Swans' cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" to be a stellar version too. I bought the Love Will Tear Us Apart ep by the Swans when it came out in 1988 and I really love this version. I think it has something to do with Michael Gira's deep vocals.

The Swans "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

Honestly, in my opinion you need some kind of special cred to get away with covering Joy Division. Sadly, Fall Out Boy decided to record their own cover and while FOB might be competent at what THEY do, their cover was so wrong for so many reasons. Brace yourself:

Fall Out Boy "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

Back with more Halloweenish songs and this time they were submitted by Kevin! Thanks Kevin!

Switchblade Symphony "Witches"

Until December "Bela Lugosi's Dead"

Wumpscut "Wreath Of Barbs"

Looks like Johnny Marr will be guest starring on a future episode of Portlandia
From Marr's official site: Johnny has filmed a guest star role for Portlandia, a US television series produced by Andrew Singer and Jonathan Krisel. Portlandia is set and filmed in Portland Oregon and features Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein.
Oh, and by the way it's Johnny Marr's birthday today!  Let's hope it's not unhappy...
Here's a bunch of old school Halloweenish songs to get you in the mood...

Bauhaus "Bela Lugosi's Dead"

Ramones "Pet Sematary"

XTC "Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead"

Tears For Fears "Watch Me Bleed"

Well, if you haven't checked it out yet, the Flaming Lips are streaming their 24 hour song, "7 Skies H3" today right here. If you decide you really like it, you can purchase a limited edition version for $5,000 dollars (U.S. currency). Yeah, that's a lot of money.

Just for fun, let's break down the math involved in this. I'd also like to point out that as I type this, it's only 5am, so hopefully my math isn't of the "funny" variety.

Songs in general run on average about 4 minutes. An average song sells on iTunes for about a dollar and the average iTunes album is about 10 dollars.

24 hours = 1440 minutes

1440 minutes divided by 4 minutes = 360 minutes

A 24 hour song would be almost the equivalent to 360 songs, so it would be like you're getting 360 songs for 5 grand.

5000 dollars divided by 360 = $13.88 per "song"

So yeah, it's pricy, but can you put a price on art? Besides, it comes in a skull and it's limited to 13 copies. Nah, can't justify it, but maybe you can. ;)

Earlier this week Q Magazine released their own Achtung Baby tribute, Ahk-toong BAY-bi Covered, featuring covers from Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Jack White, The Killers and more. The compilation was only released in the U.K. but U2 is now selling a limited number of copies on their website. You can also listen to all of the covers here.

By the way, the film Upside Down: The Creation Records Story was released earlier this year in the U.K. and it aired on the BBC on Friday. The documentary will eventually be released in North America (Rocket Releasing is the distributor of the film in the U.S.) but a release date is still TBA. In the meantime you can scour the net for a pirate version...
A few weeks ago Tom Morello interviewed Perry Farrell for a national radio special titled Inside Jane's Addiction: The Great Escape Artist. Take a listen to the special below (note that full songs from the special were edited out due to copyright restrictions.)

Neil Finn, Ryan Adams, and Janis Ian recently taped an episode of the BBC program Songwriters Circle and it was filled with DRAMA. According to this report Adams copped quite the diva 'tude during the taping. Reportedly Adams was bitter because he felt Finn and Ian played over him. Finn was annoyed that Adams didn't play the songs they way they had rehearsed them, and Ian was stunned by Adams' behavior, stating, "I have to say that in 45 years as a professional performer, I haven’t seen that kind of behavior before." AWESOME.

Watch four songs from the episode below:

"Distant Sun"

"Don't Dream It's Over"

"She Will Have Her Way"

It truly is the 90's again, isn't it? MTV's 120 Minutes and Beavis & Butthead have been resurrected, VH1's Pop Up Video is back and yesterday Fox revealed 90's sketch comedy show In Living Color will return to the airwaves!

Speaking of Beavis & Butthead, creator Mike Judge was interviewed by Vice.com recently and during the interview he made a few comments on bringing Daria's character back to Beavis & Butthead. Go directly to page three to read the Daria comments, or click here to enjoy the entire feature.

If you missed this week's premiere of Beavis & Butthead you can watch the entire episode below:

Green Day played a sold out intimate Halloween themed show in New York City last night. The band opened with the classic Halloween fave "Monster Mash" then played the Misfits' "Hybrid Moments" three times! Fans who were jonesing for new material got their wish--the band played a set of new material followed by a set of greatest hits/fan favorites. A few members from American Idiot: The Musical also joined the band on stage for a couple of songs. Check out a picture from the show (courtesy of the peeps from Paramore) here.

American Idiot: The Musical will play at the Detroit Opera House January 17-22nd. The American Idiot cast for the tour has just been announced and you can check out all the details here.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and many organizations have designated today as a day that people are encouraged to show their support by wearing pink. While I wholeheartedly support the cause, I'm not wearing pink. Instead, I'll post a link where you can donate to a worthwhile charity ( Susan G. Komen) which would be more helpful than what you wear today. Plus we'll dust off something pink to enjoy:

Vicious Pink "Fetish"

Ah, more mystery and intrigue from Trent Reznor! Reznor also revealed this week on Twitter that a bunch of new songs are coming soon!
William Beckett (formerly of The Academy Is) is a whiz at solving the Rubik's Cube. Not too long ago he solved one in about 4 minutes, but he knew that he could do better! He decided to try to cut his time in half and you can watch the results of his attempt below. By the way, The Clash song "Koka Kola" serves as the background music (and official timer) for Beckett's attempt!

Shirley Manson from Garbage revealed today on Twitter that she just completed vocals on the title track for the band's new cd. The new record from Garbage is due out in the spring, but over the past couple of months they've been posting short (very short) videos with song samples. Check out the latest one below:

If you missed this earlier in the week, check out a "progress report" from Garbage here.

Oh dear. Why not enjoy the original:

Somehow this one got by me: Crocodiles covered "Jet Boy Jet Girl" back in 2010. Who knew? I stumbled upon it when I was looking around for The Damned's version. Take a listen (lyrics NSFW depending on where you work. I'd err on the side of caution) and you can buy the mp3 here:

Coldplay's next major television event will be their appearance on Ellen on Thursday, then they'll play Saturday Night Live on November 12th.
MTV2 premiered the latest episode of 120 Minutes Wednesday morning at 3am. Why MTV2 can't bother airing it during reasonable viewing hours is beyond me. There isn't even another scheduled airing for the episode on television. Well, at least you can watch the episode in its entirety on demand here. Episode 4 features Death Cab For Cutie, City & Colour, Bush/Gavin Rossdale, Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr, Kasabian, The Big Pink, Mates Of State and more.

By now if you follow music you are likely aware the Stone Roses have reunited. The band will kick off their reunion next summer by playing three sold out shows in their hometown of Manchester, and from there they'll embark on a world tour. Dates for the world tour have not been officially announced yet, so don't be fooled by the fake itinerary which leaked a couple of days ago.

The hotly anticipated reunion will indeed be documented on film. The band has allegedly enlisted British filmmaker Shane Meadows to record their every move (ok, maybe not every move) while getting ready for the momentous tour.
U.K. football star Joey Barton is claiming he's going to make a Smiths' reunion a reality. Apparently Barton was at the Q Awards on Monday and he told the crowd onstage:

"If I could get The Smiths back together that would top anything I could achieve on the football pitch."

You're probably saying, yeah riiiiiiiight, like this guy is gonna make the impossible somehow possible. Fear not, I doubt it too, but keep in mind Barton is friends with both Johnny Marr and Morrissey (in fact he's having dinner with Moz later this week according to The Sun).

I never believed a Stone Roses full reunion would ever be a reality, so I guess anything could happen.

U.K. electronic duo Orbital will return with their eighth studio album next year. The new record is still untitled but you can check out a brand new song titled "Never" below and catch up with Orbital here.

Never by ORBITAL
Liam Gallagher was interviewed on the CBC show Strombo last night. Liam made the following comments about an Oasis reunion:

"I'm definitely open, well, Noel is the one that started this kind of thing, but I'm definitely up for doing a tour...I don't feel there's going to be a full band again, you know what I mean? That's done I think, but Noel was mentioning like a tour for the 2015 What's The Story, Morning Glory, and I think by then, three years, I think I'll grown up a bit by then and so will he. If not, I think we can do that and go back to our Beady Eye, The High Flying Birds, or whatever it is, but if the people want it we won't stand in the way. If they don't want it, they don't."

Watch the clip of Liam's comments and there's also video of he and wife Nicole discussing the music they listen to at home. Really, Loverboy and Kiss???

The Damned are currently on the road celebrating their 35th anniversary and even though the tour won't be visiting Detroit, you'll be able to get a glimpse into the band's live show soon. Filmmaker Wes Orshoski (Lemmy) has been hired by the Damned to document all the craziness and a feature length documentary will be released sometime next year. The film will feature footage of the Damned (both on and off the road) as well as interviews with band members.

Captain Sensible had this to say about why the film is going to happen:

It seems like every other scumbag who was ever in a punk band got a film made about them, now it’s our turn, and at least we have some real stories to tell. Hopefully, this will cause a bit of a stink, but that’s what it was always supposed to do.

Read more about the upcoming documentary on The Damned here.

This calls for a celebratory viewing of "Grimly Fiendish" don't you think?

The Black Keys have premiered their new single, "Lonely Boy" today and you can check out the official "first listen" video the band put together below.

"Lonely Boy" is the first single from the band's forthcoming cd El Camino which will drop December 6th. If you pre-order the cd now from the band's website you'll get a free download of the single. If you dig vinyl, a special limited edition 12'' version of "Lonely Boy" will be available on the Black Friday version of Record Store Day. Read more about that here.

Perhaps the Stone Roses have inspired Liam Gallagher, because Rolling Stone is reporting that Liam now says he's open to an Oasis reunion for the 20th anniversary of What's The Story Morning Glory (which would be 2015). I didn't believe for a moment that the Stone Roses would reunite, but I don't have any doubts that an Oasis reunion will happen. I'll actually be surprised if it takes 4 years.

Sounds like the Gallagher brothers are mellowing. Just today Shortlist published an interview with Noel Gallagher who mentioned he recently threw down a few pints with Damon Albarn. Well, that's certainly some good news. It seems like just yesterday when Noel made his infamous statement about wishing Albarn and bandmate Alex James would "catch AIDS and die", doesn't it? Incidentally, the only good thing that came out of Noel's incredibly distasteful statement was the song "My Big Mouth" which Noel wrote as an apology of sorts.

Oasis "My Big Mouth"

Tickets to see the Stone Roses at Heaton Park in Manchester, England June 29th & 30th go on sale tomorrow at 9:30am BST. Visit the band's official website for links to purchase tickets.

With William Shatner, you already know going in that it's going to be for shits and giggles, but with Lou Reed & Metallica? They're (or they were) both clearly credible artists, and shockingly enough they're acting like their collaborative cd, Lulu, is a serious release. But oh my, my, my...it's really hard to take Lulu, which is set to drop November 1st, as a serious project. Don't believe me? Why not take a listen to a full stream of the cd here. I warned you.

Well, now the British paper The Sun is reporting that Ian Brown has confirmed the Roses' reunion. Brown's BFF Dynamo (a magician!) allegedly showed the Sun a text message from Brown stating the reunion was happening. Allegedly. Read the entire story here. What would be awesome is if all of this turns out to not be true.
Mansun "Wide Open Space"

Hole has pulled out of Australia's Soundwave Festival 2012 according to a few tweets the festival's promoter sent out (here's one, here's another). The reason? Hole didn't like their slot on the festival because they'd be "opening" for Limp Bizkit. Hole was slotted to play before Durst & company and it seems the scheduling raised the ire of the always lovable Courtney Love. Keep in mind nothing official has been announced (Hole is still listed on the festival's website) so we'll have to see what happens. In the meantime, follow along and check out the tweets from the festival's promoter here.

Maybe some good will come out of this whole situation and Courtney and Fred Durst will punch each other out and blood will be shed. One can always dream.
Coldplay appeared on CBS Sunday Morning today. Watch the interview below (suffer through the 12 second ad, it's worth it):

*WTF is up with Chris Martin's hair these days? Just saying.
Here's a link to NME.com's list of the top 150 tracks from the last 15 years that I was talking about earlier on Time Warp.

Here's the link to hear the entire new cd from Noel Gallagher.
Well, on Friday the rumors started again: will the Stone Roses reunite? At first, when I heard the rumor again I rolled my eyes, because really, are we going to go through this again? It seems like every few months this rumor seems to persist. Back in 2009 everyone was SO SURE there would be a reunion for the 20th anniversary of the band's classic cd The Stone Roses. Well, there was no reunion and guitarist John Squire even created a sculpture to air his view on getting the band back together.

Anyway, back in the spring rumors swirled again after singer Ian Brown and John Squire had allegedly buried the hatchet and started speaking after seeing each other at the funeral for Mani's mother. Again, lots of hot air blew, but no reunion.

But now NME has revealed that a noted publicity firm in the U.K. will be holding a press conference in London on Tuesday to make "a very important announcement" and the announcement will be about a band/concert/tour. People in the know think it's about the Stone Roses and a couple of people that know the band have made some comments on Twitter lending more credence to the rumors.

Will it happen? I guess we'll find out on Tuesday. The rumor in 2009 was that everyone in the band other than Ian Brown wanted to reunite, especially considering the amount of money that was on the table. Interestingly enough Brown was recently divorced, so perhaps he needs the cash? The money on the table for this reunion would be huge, huge, huge. We'll see if it happens. Stay tuned.

Wow, I'm still in shock as I type this. Spin is reporting that Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth have separated after 27 years of marriage. The news has been confirmed by Matador Records, so this isn't some ridiculous rumor. Gordon and Moore were married in 1984 and have a 17 year old daughter, Coco. Read Spin's report on the split here.
Neverending White Lights will release Act III: Love Will Ruin on November 8th. Daniel Victor also revealed via a tweet that Act III is a double album and will be released in two separate parts. More info is on the way soon, but in the meantime check out the official trailer for the new cd:
