For Courtney Love's birthday the archive website Letters of Note dug out a CLo oldie but goodie. The backstory: in 1996 Love wrote a letter to Spin commenting on a Madonna interview the magazine published earlier that year. At the time, there was ongoing drama between Madonna and Courtney--you may recall the awkward September 1995 post-VMA incident where Courtney crashed Madonna's interview with Kurt Loder. Some time later, Courtney wrote a three page rambling letter to Spin. [By the way, there's no doubt it's a legit letter - Courtney is well known for her incoherent writing/ramblings, especially back in the 90's when she regularly posted on AOL's "invite only" music industry board.]
If you were a fan of 90's alt-rock, you'll get more than a few laughs from Courtney's letter to Spin. She referred to Madonna's music as "disco," name dropped a few big names/bands from the 90's alt-rock scene, and spent a fair portion of time ripping on Alanis Morrissette (who was a ridiculously HUGE deal at the time). Do yourself a favor and read the letter here (the website also posted a transcript since Courtney's writing is a mess).
