Noel Gallagher - F**k the Mayans

Noel Gallagher was interviewed before his performance at Kollenfest 2012 in Oslo.  The interview is painful to endure until the very end when the awkward interviewer asks Noel about his predictions/thoughts about December 21, 2012.  The interviewer has to explain the date to Noel, and then Noel hilarity ensures:

Spiritualized - Little Girl

Spiritualized have announced the video for "Little Girl," the latest single from Sweet Heart Sweet Light, will premiere July 2nd exclusively on Noisey. The video was shot on the border of Poland and Germany and features UK daredevil Chesca Miles. Dum Dum Girls - End Of Daze EP

Dum Dum Girls have announced they'll release a new EP titled The End Of Daze on September 25th.  While you're waiting for the new EP, take a listen to "I Don't Care," a song Dum Dum Girls wrote for the May edition of Rookie.  The band have been on a roll releasing awesome music fast and furiously - in March 2011 they released the EP He Gets Me High, then only months later followed that up with the full length Only In Dreams.  Take a listen to a song from both of their 2011 releases below and catch up with Dum Dum Girls here.

Iggy Pop - Taming of the Stooge

Iggy Pop was interviewed for this weekend's New York Times and talked health, music, and sex. In the interview, titled The Taming Of The Stooge, Iggy revealed that despite his heroin use over the years, he's lucky to be in pretty good shape:

"I’m a more than moderately healthy 65-year-old male who has gotten away with a lot of stuff."

He also commented that he wished he would have had more sex over the years, and went on to make the following characterization about his penis:

"I would characterize it sort of like a powerful interest group within a political party at this point. It used to be the entire political party."

Joe Jackson - The Duke + tour

Joe Jackson returned this week with a new, yet sort of old, album.  The album, The Duke, is a collection of ten Duke Ellington covers (new recordings of old songs by Duke Ellington, so it's new yet old.)  One of the songs, "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" features Iggy Pop on vocals.  Watch a couple of videos of Jackson talking about the project.  The first video features Jackson explaining how the collaboration with Iggy Pop came about:

Jackson will be hitting the road along with his ensemble band in support of the Duke this fall, plus he'll also play classics from his entire collection of work from Look Sharp! to Rain. Noel Gallagher - God Help Us All + It Makes Me Wanna Cry

Two previously unreleased Noel Gallagher songs have surfaced online.  The song "God Help Us All" and "It Makes Me Wanna Cry" were recorded during a recent soundcheck and were leaked online.  Gallagher told NME previously that "God Help Us All," will be released before the end of the year.  Not much is known about the other track "It Makes Me Wanna Cry."  Take a listen to both tracks below.

Beady Eye - Parr Hall Warrington, June 28th

Beady Eye rocked Warrington's Parr Hall on Thursday night.  The band debuted a new song called "World Not Set In Stone" and Liam Gallagher also made good on his earlier promise to dust off some Oasis songs - the band's set included both "Rock & Roll Star" and "Morning Glory."  Check out the full set list here and watch footage from the show including the live debut of "World Not Set In Stone" below. The Presets - Youth In Trouble

The Presets debuted the video for "Youth In Trouble" today.  "Youth In Trouble" is the first single from the band's forthcoming album Pacifica, which arrives on September 14th.  Watch "Youth In Trouble" below and catch up with the Presets here. 

Stone Roses - Grand return to Manchester's Heaton Park

All eyes are on the city of Manchester as preparations are being made for the grand return of the Stone Roses. This weekend the band will return to the city for three massive sold out shows in Heaton Park. In advance of the gigs, city officials have sent out letters notifying the public about road closures, traffic/safety issues, and also the potential for noise (officials outlined the band's rehearsal/soundcheck schedule with curfews).  A "community informational hotline" has also been set up, and fans are even being warned of the potential for bogus merch vendors selling "dodgy merchandise."

Members of New Order, Happy Mondays, Charlatans, and Inspiral Carpets are reportedly attending the shows, and you can pretty much bet Liam Gallagher will be at all three shows (Noel Gallagher is busy gigging on the Euro festival circuit, so he won't be showing up).  Even some Hollywood types may be in attendance (though still no official word on whether self-proclaimed Roses' fan Brad Pitt will be making the trek.) 

The media are gearing up for the Stone Roses as well:  BBC Radio 6 will air a Stone Roses two-hour special Sunday from 6pm - 8pm BST (1pm - 3pm ET) and is taking suggestions for the program right now.  NME has a special Heaton Park preview in this week's issue of the magazine.  Then, of course, there's always the gossip rags attempting to stir up more Stone Roses drama.

The three night stand kicks off tomorrow with Primal Scream, The Wailers, The Vaccines, and Kid British all set to open tomorrow's show.  Updates/video will be posted, so be sure to check back!

Tim Burgess - Oh No I Love You

Tim Burgess from Charlatans U.K. has announced details about his upcoming solo record Oh No I Love You (cover art posted above).   The album features ten tracks including the new song, "The Doors Of Then," which was recorded in Nashville last year and features lyrics by Lambchop's Kurt Wagner.  Burgess reveals how the collaboration came about:

The root of this album goes right back to a Kurt Wagner show in Manchester.  It was the quietest yet the most powerful live performance I had ever seen and afterwards I carried Kurt's guitar to the car for him.  I took the chance to ask him if he would ever consider writing a song with me.  "Sure Tim, you write the music and I'll write the words."  That one song turned into an album and almost ten years after we first talked about it, the album is ready and it's called Oh No I Love You

Efterklang - Piramida

Efterklang are set to return with their new album Piramida on September 24 (worldwide) and on September 25th in the U.S.  The album is available to pre-order on cd and vinyl here.

Last year, Efterklang began work on the new album during a short trip to the Arctic island of Spitsbergen. The band visited the Russian settlement Piramida, and while there collected a variety of recordings that they've utilized on the new album. Efterklang have posted dates for their 2012 world tour, which includes only one North American date. Efterklang, backed by a 16 member orchestra, play New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 22nd. Information and tickets for the NYC show are available here.  Efterklang are planning on playing some dates in the U.S. in early 2013, though nothing has been announced yet.

The Cure - Rock Werchter 2012

The Cure play the Rock Werchter 2012 festival in Belgium on Thursday (June 28th), and part of their set will stream live right here.  The Cure are scheduled to play at 10:45 pm Belgian time (4:45 pm ET).  It's unlikely that the band's full set will be webcast (they usually agree for only a portion of the set--usually an hour--to stream live) so it's unclear at this point whether their portion of the webcast will start at 4:45pm or a bit later.  I'll update as more information becomes available.  

The four day festival also features Pearl Jam, Kasabian, The Vaccines, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Noel Gallagher, M83, Simple Minds, Editors, Mumford & Sons, and tons more.  *Note that all the bands playing will not be webcast live.

Muse "Survival"

Listen to the new track "Survival" by Muse below. The song premiered earlier on the BBC and is available now on iTunes.  "Survival" is the theme to this summer's Olympics in London. Read the band's comments about the song here.

Muse revealed during an interview with BBC Radio 1 host Zane Lowe earlier that they're currently finishing up work on their new album The 2nd Law. The band worked on the record for the last six months (on and off) and are firming up the tracklisting and final mixes this week. Some new sounds on The 2nd Law will include a choir as well as brass, and they say that a couple of songs really "groove."  The band said the first proper single from The 2nd Law (band declined to give the song name) is "stripped down" and "minimal," so it sounds like the people who were initially flipping out over a potential dubstep direction of the band can take a chillpill.

The 2nd Law drops worldwide on September 18th.

Dr. Dee - London premiere + trailer

Blur fans are gearing up for the band's live Twitter premiere of two new singles on July 2nd, but that's not the only big Damon Albarn event that is making news - Albarn's opera Dr. Dee made its London premiere at Eno earlier this week.  Read the Guardian's review (including some pictures) here and take a look at a short video with audience reaction and some footage from the production below:

The lowdown on Dr. Dee:

Although largely unknown today, Doctor Dee was the quintessential Renaissance Man. From astrology to alchemy and physics to philosophy, his thirst for knowledge was insatiable and, as a key advisor to Elizabeth I, he is credited with providing much of the intelligence which shaped 'the British Empire' established under her rule. Dee also dabbled in the occult and, ultimately, this fascination destroyed him. Conned by a deranged medium, Dee's career ended in disgrace and sexual scandal and he died discredited and penniless.

Dr. Dee plays at Eno in London through July 7th and tickets for some of the showings are still available.  Damon Albarn's solo album which doubles as the soundtrack to the production is out now.

Muse "Survival"

Muse are set to debut a new song, "Survival," on British radio this afternoon (7:30 pm BST/2:30 pm ET) and will be available on iTunes later today.  The song will be the official London Olympics 2012 song and was written specifically for the Olympics.  Watch BBC News' short preview clip featuring "Survival"


Earlier today Muse posted an official statement on their website about "Survival" which you can read below:

We are very excited to announce that a Muse song, Survival, has been selected by the London Olympic committee to be the main official song for the London 2012 Olympic Games.  Matt wrote the song with the Olympics in mind. It's about total conviction and pure determination to win.

The song will be played throughout the Games including when athletes enter the stadium, in the lead up to the medal ceremony and also as the theme for all international TV coverage. The worldwide radio exclusive will be tonight on BBC Radio 1 during Zane Lowe's show around 19:30 and will be available to buy on iTunes and in the muse.mu store immediately afterwards.

We are honoured that the Olympics have chosen our song to officially represent the London 2012 Olympic Games across the globe.

Peter Hook - Music Promotion Degree

Peter Hook has revealed to the BBC that he'll launch a master's degree program in music management promotion at the University of Central Lancashire.  Hook has lots of experience to offer up, besides being a former member of Joy Division and New Order, Hooky will draw on his experience with Factory Records and legendary nightclub the Hacienda. 

 

Hook has previously offered up band/management advice in his 2009 book How Not To Run A Club, but now he'll be personally teaching students on a one-on-one type of atmosphere.  According to a report in The Telegraph, the course will be offered to 10 students who will be mentored "intensively," and will equip students with "business planning, presenting and formatting music for commercial release....as well as devising and executing marketing plans and promotional campaigns."  But will the degree teach you to publicly feud with your old band mates?

Meanwhile,  Peter Hook is set to release a new book about Joy Division before the end of the year.  Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division will be released on paperback in the U.S. on December 1st and on hardcover in January 2013. 

Mark Gardener - June 21st KEXP in Seattle

Mark Gardener appeared on Seattle's KEXP radio on June 21st for a live session before his show later that night at Barboza.  Gardener played four songs (3 new songs and Ride's classic "Twisterella") backed by Sky Parade and was interviewed briefly.  During the interview Gardener talked a bit about Ride and his career and said, "at the end of the day you hope anything you're doing stands the test of time," and overall he sounded very modest and thankful to be creating music. 

Gardener played three new songs and Ride's classic "Twisterella."  He also revealed one of the new songs, "The Places We Go," is a collaboration with Robin Guthrie (Guthrie also mentioned it briefly here) and will be released in July.

The Stone Roses - Lyon 2012

The Stone Roses tour stopped off in Lyon at Les Nuits des Fourvieres last night (and no, ex-Manchester United player Eric Cantona didn't join the band onstage).  Watch some fan shot video of the show below, including a cushion throwing extravaganza near the end of the show.  The Stone Roses return home to Manchester for a three night stand at Heaton Park this weekend.  Tour support for the Heaton Park shows includes Primal Scream, Beady Eye, the Vaccines, and the Justice Tonight Band, featuring Mick Jones from the Clash.

White Stripes - Lafayette Blues/Sugar

An extremely rare limited edition White Stripes 7 inch single is up for auction on Ebay.  The Lafayette Blues/Sugar Never Tasted So Good 7'' is an original pressing on pinkish vinyl and comes with a hand painted cover.  The single, reported to be in "near mint condition," was originally released on Italy Records and is the first of only 15 copies made. The Ebay auction goes through July 2nd, but you'll have to dig deep if you're interested in the release--the single is currently going for over ten thousand dollars.  Yes, you read that right.  Take a look at the listing and bid here.

Madness - Isle Of Wight 2012

The Vaccines - Live in Brighton EP

Blur - Live Twitter performance

Last week Blur teased fans on Twitter with a few cryptic tweets and pictures.  Today the band released a video with their big announcement: On July 2nd Blur will perform two new songs they've written specifically for their upcoming Hyde Park show atop a rooftop in London, and the performance will stream live on Twitter.  The band will play "Under The Westway" at 6:15 pm BST (1:15 pm ET), and "The Puritan" will follow an hour later at 7:15 pm BST (2:15 pm ET).

Mark Gardener - Live + Hush Delirium

Mark Gardener from the band Ride is currently in the U.S. wrapping up his tour of the west coast. Gardener's final date on the tour takes place tonight at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, then he'll kick off another round of touring in Australia and Europe.  Unfortunately it doesn't look like there will be any more dates in North America for awhile, so be sure to enjoy some fan-filmed footage from the June 21st show in Seattle below.

Fans of Gardener will also be interested in his new art/music project Hush Delirium. Gardener and music collaborators which include, Aziz Ibrahim (ex-Stone Roses), Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre), and Dean Garcia (ex-Curve), are creating the musical component of the project, which will then be turned over to artist Simon Welford, who will in turn create art inspired by the music. David Bowie's classic The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders From Mars turned 40 this year and was recently remastered and re-released on cd, DVD, and vinyl. Pearl Jam - Live at Manchester Arena

Pearl Jam wrapped up their two-night stand at the Manchester Arena last night. Watch some fan shot video from the shows, including last night's performance of "Hitchhiker." Before playing the song Eddie Vedder informed the crowd it was the first time they've played "Hitchhiker" live (the track is an outtake from Binaural and was released on 2003's Lost Dogs.)

Radiohead - Euro shows postponed

Radiohead posted a statement on their website informing fans that their European shows scheduled from June 30 - July 9th have been postponed and will be rescheduled. The band indicated the reason for the postponement was due to damaged equipment:

As you will probably have heard the roof over the stage collapsed at our show in Toronto killing crew member Scott Johnson and injuring three other crew members. The collapse also destroyed the light show – this show was unique and will take many weeks to replace. The collapse also caused serious damage to our backline, some elements of which are decades old and therefore hard to replace.

The make-up dates for the Euro shows are expected to be announced next week. Read the full statement on the postponement here.

Meanwhile, four companies, including Radiohead's Ticker Tape Touring LLC are among those under investigation over Saturday's fatal roof collapse. Read the report in the Toronto Star here.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are the latest band to have their music reworked and turned into lullabies for the Rockabye Baby! series. Rockabye Baby! The First Time I Heard Joy Division/New Order

The first in a series of digital books compiled by author Scott Heim was just released - The First Time I Heard Joy Division/New Order is a collection of first person accounts from musicians, writers, and artists, discussing the first time they heard the music of Joy Division and New Order.  The book features 45 different artists including members of Spiritualized, Lush, Swervedriver, The Wedding Present, Curve, Clan of Xymox, Catherine Wheel, and the Jesus & Mary Chain.  A sample featuring the forward by Heim, plus the accounts from Adam Franklin (Swervedriver), Pieter Nooten (Clan of Xymox), and Christophe Den Tandt (The Names), is available to view here.  Purchase The First Time I Heard Joy Division/New Order from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Pearl Jam - Live in Manchester 2012 + Pinkpop 1992

Last night Pearl Jam played the first of a two night stand in Manchester at the MEN Arena.  From all accounts the show was amazing - the band performed after curfew was over and even after the arena lights came on!  So far, not much footage of the show has been posted, but you can take a look at their performance of "Do The Evolution" below and a really shaky fan-shot video of show closer, " Rockin' In The Free World" below:

Morrissey - BYT ticket giveaway for best suicide note

Earlier this week website Brightest Young Things announced a giveaway for Morrissey concert tickets - the tickets for the December 7th D.C. area show would be awarded to the person writing the best suicide note. Yes, you read that correctly - THE BEST SUICIDE NOTE. Apparently the contest was NOT a joke and the braintrusts at BYT legitimately thought it was an incredible hip, clever, and witty way to give out concert tickets.  Read the comments BYT's editor, Logan Donaldson, made to Arts Desk, defending the contest:

"As with many of our giveaways we wanted to be thematic, and working under the assumption that his most enthusiastic fans would be responding to a first-chance giveaway and would be well acquainted with his maudlin, macabre persona, we saw it as a tongue-in-cheek opportunity to stoke the creativity of the Morrissey fans within our readership.

The reality of suicide is obviously horrifying, and in no way were we promoting or suggesting otherwise. We didn't foresee upsetting a few of our readers in our attempt at being cute with the giveaway theme."

Being cute??? Wow.  At any rate, as both Arts Desk and DCist point out, due to the outpouring of negative criticism the contest has now been pulled and all evidence of the contest has been replaced with a skull and crossbones error page.

Cold As Life - A Detroit Story

A feature length documentary on the underground music scene in Detroit is in the works.  Cold As Life - A Detroit Story examines the decline of Detroit and the resulting social effects on the rock, punk, and hardcore movements in the city.  Lars Fredricksen of Rancid serves as the film's narrator.  Take a look at the trailer for the film below and donate to the project's Kickstarter here. 

Blur - Oh The Mystery!

Blur have announced something special will be taking place July 2nd at 7:15 pm BST (2:15 pm Eastern) and have a countdown clock posted on their official site.  They're not saying exactly what will be going down then, but they seem to indicate they'll be premiering new music.  Yesterday they tweeted out a picture with lyrics "the flash of a blade is one less getting paid," which are from "The Puritan," the new song Damon Albarn premiered at Poem 2012 recently.  Today they tweeted out another picture which are lyrics to "Under The West Way," a song Albarn and Graham Coxon debuted at the Brit Award War Child benefit in February. 

It seems almost certain Blur will release "The Puritan" and "Under The West Way" on July 2nd, with perhaps the band performing the songs live somewhere (British radio, television, or a live webcast) at 7:15 pm BST.  Stay tuned for more details and visit the band's official site for the latest.

NME - Greatest tracks

NME's 60th anniversary celebrations continue today with the magazine's feature on the greatest 100 tracks of their lifetime.  The full list is available in the physical and digital version of the magazine (out today) and they've posted the top 20 list on their website.  The top 20 list is pretty solid - Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was chosen as the number one song, and they've also included The Smiths, The Cure, David Bowie, New Order, Pulp, and more.  Take a look at the top 20 list here.
