Today is Mistress Day - I'm not celebrating, by the way, so save your slings and arrows. But it's the perfect excuse to post a classic song from the Red House Painters!

The track "Mistress" appears on the Red House Painters' spring 1993 self-titled album (aka Rollercoaster due to the album's cover art). Two different versions of "Mistress" are included on the album - a full plugged in version and an acoustic/piano version. The lyrics for each are slightly different - the full version finds leader Mark Kozelek insisting, "I've had enough of these brutal beatings and name callings" while in the piano version he admits, "I want a piece of these brutal beatings and name callings." Slightly different, but both sublime. Enjoy them below along with Kozelek's 2012 performance of "Mistress" on the Jimmy Fallon (backed by the Roots):

Mark Kozelek disbanded Red House Painters in the early 2000s and went on to form Sun Kil Moon, though from time to time Kozelek releases material under his own name.  Next week a Kozelek bonanza is coming, because Caldo Verde is releasing two separate Kozelek solo albums (a covers album, Like Rats, a live album Live at Phoenix Public House Melbourne), plus a new Sun Kil Moon album titled Among The Leaves on February 19th. Like Rats, features 13 covers (cd version adds three bonus tracks) originally recorded by Bad Brains, Descendents, Sonny & Cher, Ted Nugent, Dayglow Abortions, and Genesis among others, and is streaming in full now through February 19th over at Pitchfork.
