Bono from U2 was interviewed on Irish radio on Tuesday to discuss the recent passing of poet Seamus Heaney as well as his mission in Africa. At the end of the 20 minute interview, Bono gave fans a status update on the new U2 album.  According to Bono, the new album won't be out this year (which corroborates Steve Lillywhite's recent comments on the matter). Here's Bono's reply to host Pat Kenny's question of, "back in the studio, finished, or what?":

"The band? We're nearly there, I think, though this can change. There's no, there's no sense in the band offer any commitment to any release schedule, any...to anything. They just, they just want to be really, make some great music, and...but I think we're nearly there. And once we're there, we'll know it. I'd like to think that next year, there'll be a U2 release. And, I mean, it sounds like we've been (faffing?) around but actually, what we just, what just happened is we've just got lost in the music and went right back to why we wanted to be in the band in the first place. Listen to the music of the mid 70s, punk rock, electronica...we're really sort of beginning again. I mean, I know we do this periodically, but you have to, and...so it's very different, very fresh sound, and some beautiful songs, big hooks, and yeah, you'll be sick of us."

So there you have it. The U2 record is far from complete.  Stream the full audio archive of the interview here.  Forward to ~ 20 minutes in to hear Bono tell a story about dancing Saturday Night Fever-style next to John Travolta at an Oscar party, and directly afterward he launches into the discussion about the new album.  Via Alan Cross.

In other U2 related news, Rolling Stone is reporting Adam Clayton got married yesterday.
