Nirvana was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last night. Michael Stipe inducted the band, saying they were "lightning in a bottle," and remarking that Nirvana "told the truth and people listened." After Stipe's induction speech, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic took the stage accompanied by Courtney Love (who hugged Grohl), Cobain's mother Wendy O'Connor, and Cobain's sister Kim. Novoselic thanked Cobain and talked about how much he missed him, plus thanked fans. Grohl called Cobain "an intense artist" and later gave props to Nirvana's previous drummers including Chad Channing, who he called his drumming hero. During her speech, O'Connor remarked that Cobain would have been proud, though he would have pretended like he wasn't.

The induction speeches were followed by a four-song Nirvana set featuring Grohl, Novoselic, and Pat Smear, with rotating female vocalists including Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, and St. Vincent (Annie Clark). After the ceremony was over, they headed to nearby venue Saint Vitus Bar and ripped through a surprise set, which also included J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr and John McCauley from Deer Tick.

Highlights from the induction ceremony air on HBO on May 31st at 9pm. Some video ripped from the Rock Hall's stream in Cleveland has been uploaded, though will probably be pulled down soon. Check out video of Stipe's induction speech below (while you can), and read more about last night's induction ceremony over at Rolling Stone and Billboard.

Stipe's induction speech begins ~ 3:20
