U2 shared the cover art for its new album Songs of Innocence which is posted above. The artwork, which was shot by Glen Luchford, features drummer Larry Mullen Jr protecting his 18 year old son. U2 explains the meaning behind the artwork:

"Songs Of Innocence is the most intimate album we've ever made. With this record we were looking for the raw, naked and personal, to strip everything back.'

The idea of the unique relationship between a parent and child, the image of a father and son, came from the band. The shoot with Larry and his son was initially an experiment but everyone loved it as a visual metaphor for the record.

If you know the album, you'll see the themes in the visual language, how 'holding on to your own innocence is a lot harder than holding on to someone else's."

Songs Of Innocence is available as a free download through iTunes through October 12th. The physical versions of Songs Of Innocence will be released on October 13th -- the standard CD comes with a 24 page booklet, the 2CD deluxe edition includes a 6 song acoustic session; and the 2LP 180 gram white vinyl version includes an alternate mix of "Sleep Like A Baby Tonight." Pre-order the physical versions through Amazon and U2's store.
