Henry Rollins released a new book this week titled A Grim Detail. Rollins revealed the following info on his latest memoir:

"The book covers my travels and work from the years of 2009 and 2010. In that time period, I went all over the world for shows and exploration. North Korea, Mongolia, South Sudan and Saudi Arabia are just a few of the destinations.

The book took a long time to complete because of work schedules, travel and the fact that it's a much larger bit of writing than usual."

Two versions of A Grim Detail are available -- a limited edition version is signed, numbered, and comes with a black cover and color photos; the standard edition includes black and white photos and has a yellow cover. Order here.

Henry Rollins hits the road for a handful of live dates later this year.  The tour includes a stop at the Royal Oak Music Theatre in October. Dates are posted below:

Al Jourgensen has announced plans to tour Ministry's final album From Beer To Eternity. The dates haven't been announced yet, however Jourgensen revealed his intention to tour the record via a post on Facebook yesterday. He also confirmed (in case there was any doubt) that he won't be recording another Ministry record.  Check out what Uncle Al had to say below:

"Yup you heard right...will be touring the FBTE album....the set will be FBTE in it's exact order...and a few oldies for an encore...and it just won't be America and Europe this time....we'll see ya down under as well as Mexico South America and Japan...so start rounding up every fucking Amish teen you can find and bring em to the shows.....I will exact my revenge on those bastards....I'm still puking from their toxic "wood milk " shit.......yuk!...if there was ever a reason to tour this is it....oh btw...it's a secret for now...but I'm pretty sure you've heard of the dude that'll take Mikey's place......ok that's it....so let it be written ...so let it be done....

P.S. still not a chance in hell there will be another Ministry album.....will be doing some side stuff though when I get my ass to LA.....Mikey's last words to me were....FBTE could not be topped ...so why bother MINISTRY RECORDINGS ARE DONE !!!! Carve that shit on a stone tablet!"

No word on when Jourgensen will be announcing more info on the tour, or who will be Mike Scaccia's replacement.

Soundgarden's 20th anniversary reissue of Superunknown will be released on Tuesday, June 3rd and to celebrate, Soundgarden will be performing on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon the night of the record's release. It's unknown which song(s) they'll perform, however drummer Matt Cameron, will be indeed be performing with Soundgarden.

The night before the record's release, Soundgarden performs a sold out show at Webster Hall in New York and they'll perform Superunknown in full at the gig. Though no other Superunknown shows have been announced, Chris Cornell told Rolling Stone Soundgarden will play Superunknown in full a few more times:

"Well, we're still considering it. There are a couple more shows where we will play the whole thing. Really, we could choose to do that at any one of these Nine Inch Nails dates at any time – or the whole thing. You never know [laughs]."

Pre-order the 20th anniversary edition of Superunknown on standard CD, deluxe CD, super deluxe 4CD/1Blu-ray, and 2 LP vinyl. Several exclusive merchandise bundles are available and come with a FREE 15 track instant download of the newly remastered Superunknown immediately after purchase. Pre-order here.

Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails hit the road in July for a co-headline tour this summer. Nine Inch Nails will be performing last at all of the shows -- Kim Thayil explained in a recent interview that it makes sense for Soundgarden to perform first, because NIN has a production-heavy live show, which will take a long time to remove from the stage after their set.

Midge Ure returns with a new solo album titled Fragile on July 7th. Ure announced the news via a statement on his newly launched album microsite, plus he explained the philosophy behind the album:

"Music inhabits a very strange and different world these days but I would still like to think that what moved me and drove me to become a musician all those years ago still exists and lives on for many people out there. That indefinable something which makes you listen to a piece of music over and over again where you can't feel satisfied until you hear that guitar melody or that vocal phrase just one more time.

I think an album, like a diary, should reflect all the highs and lows and good and bad you have experienced over the time period it has taken to write.

That is exactly what I hope Fragile does."

The album's first single, "Because," will be released in the coming weeks, but for now fans can check out a 10 minute collection of samples from the album here, plus read Ure's full statement on Fragile here.

UPDATE 6/24/14: Ure's new single "Because" was released. Stream it below and read more here.

Though the next album to be released in the Smashing Pumpkins' reissue series will be Adore, Billy Corgan is already designing the eventual re-release of Machina. Corgan detailed his plan for the Machina reissue, and it's going to be immense.  Besides reissuing Machina (along with bonus material), Corgan plans to release the originally intended double/triple album sequence in the original form in which it was written.  From the posting on the band's official site:

Billy Corgan has indicated plans to put the album not only in it’s original and intended double/triple album sequence, but has designs on commissioning new remixes of all materials as well. The intention is to present MACHINA in the original form in which it was written; or in his words, ‘as a theatrical narrative.’

Other possibilities of coalescing the story exist: including the addition of extant materials such acoustic alternates, re-contextualized soundtrack pieces, and use of spoken word to create an immersive experience.”

“I’m also not opposed to asking current artists to participate, singing songs as such on the compositions meant for other character’s voices,” Billy adds. “Finishing what the band started so long ago, and we just didn’t have the strength to end.”

Corgan has just begun working on the Machina reissue, so it'll be awhile. The reissue of Adore is expected out this summer, and two brand new Smashing Pumpkins albums, Monument to an Elegy and Day To Night, will be released in 2015.

Bob Mould returns with his new studio album Beauty & Ruin on June 3rd. According to Mould, the album is about the realization that every year of his life has been tougher, and the subject matter in part deals with the passing of his father, who died in 2012. The 12 song album clocks in at 36 minutes, packing a short but very powerful assault. Mould achieved the intense sound on the album by using a technique he hadn't on previous records -- he wrote the songs standing up (as if he was standing up at a show performing), which positions/opens the diaphragm fully, giving the voice a fuller sound.

Mould has unveiled two songs from the record recently (stream below), but now fans can read a track-by-track description of all 12 songs here.

Pre-order Beauty & Ruin from iTunes, Amazon, and Merge.

Bob Mould will be playing shows in North America in support of Beauty & Ruin. Dates are posted below and Mould will be announcing more dates for an expanded North American tour shortly.

Ian Curtis died on this day in 1980. A collection of audio, video, and links are posted below in remembrance.

Curtis' life was featured on the BBC program Great Lives in 2008. Host Matthew Parris, British poet Simon Armitage and Peter Hook discussed Curtis' life, musical impact, and his final days. During the show, Hook played a short snippet of an unreleased version of Ian Curtis singing "Love Will Tear Us Apart" recorded by Malcolm McLaren. Stream the episode of Great Lives below - more info on the episode is posted here.

Curtis took his own life the day before Joy Division were scheduled to leave England to come to America for their first tour. The full Joy Division North American tour itinerary isn't officially available to view, however this website attempted to piece the tour together using Rob Gretton's notes, club ads, and other scraps of info. FYI, there was a Detroit date scheduled for May 26th at Bookies.

An excellent documentary on Joy Division simply titled Joy Division was released in 2007. The film includes interviews with Curtis' band members as well as key players like Peter Saville, Anton Corbijn, and Tony Wilson, among others. The full documentary is available to view on Hulu.

In 2005, the Anton Corbijn-directed biopic Control was released. Watch the full film on Hulu.

Here's another documentary on Joy Division titled Joy Division: Under Review.  The film is "unofficial" and does not include interview footage with any of the surviving members of Joy Division/New Order, though it's still worth watching.

Compilation of live appearances

A collection of "remastered" audio of all available Joy Division rehearsals

Finally, several Joy Division bootlegs are available to stream/download from A Means To An End blog.

Echo & the Bunnymen's U.K. tour got off to an unfortunate start -- a few dates into the tour, leader Ian McCulloch lost his voice. McCulloch's laryngitis is severe enough that the band has decided to postpone all the remaining dates on the U.K. tour. McCulloch is expected to fully recover after resting his voice, and make up dates will be rescheduled for June. The U.K. tour postponement will not affect the North American tour which kicks off in August.

Echo & the Bunnymen release the new Youth-produced album Meteorites on June 3rd. Pre-order from iTunes, Amazon, and Pledge Music (Pledge Music is offering a deluxe edition which comes with a bonus 'making of the album' DVD).

Foo Fighters announced today that the follow up to 2011's Wasting Light will be released this fall to coincide with the band's 20th anniversary. The album (still untitled) features eight songs, each recorded in a different city: Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington D.C., and New York City, and several guests will be appearing on the album, including Ian McKaye from Fugazi, Nancy Wilson from Heart, and Paul Stanley of KISS.

Additionally, the recording sessions were filmed and the footage will be included in the upcoming Dave Grohl series, which is premiering on HBO this fall. The series, broken up into eight episodes (one for each city/song), will focus on the city's musical history, local influential musicians, and the recording studio where the Foos recorded.

Rolling Stone reports that Electrical Audio, Steve Albini's studio, will be featured in the Chicago episode (some Wax Trax! folks also participated), Don Zientara's Inner Ear studio is featured in the D.C. episode, and the legendary Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree is part of the Los Angeles episode.

An official release date for the album and premiere date for the HBO series has not been announced yet.

The shoegaze documentary Beautiful Noise directed by Eric Green premieres at the Seattle International Film Festival in Seattle on May 31st and June 1st. The film examines how bands such as Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus & Mary Chain, and other seminal shoegaze acts influenced and inspired generations of musicians. One of the exciting features of the documentary is that several musicians who rarely grant interviews, (let alone on-camera interviews), like Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), and Jim Reid (Jesus & Mary Chain) have participated in the film. Other influential musicians in the alternative scene including Robert Smith, Bobby Gillespie, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, and Wayne Coyne also appear in the film.

Stay tuned for news on further screenings. In the meantime, take a look at the trailer for Beautiful Noise below plus a couple of interview clips (taken from the 2013 Kickstarter campaign) below.

Jack White and Neil Young head to the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Monday, May 12th to discuss Young's new album A Letter Home. The album merits a discussion with the two musical power players for a few reasons: the album is a collection of cover songs (originally by Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and Gordon Lightfoot and more), plus includes Young's cover of Bert Jansch's "Needle of Death," which was the inspiration for Young's classic song "The Needle & the Damage Done." White's involvement with the record makes it that much more interesting -- the album's vintage/lo-fi sound was achieved using the refurbished 1947 Voice-O-Graph booth inside White's recording studio at Third Man Records in Nashville.

Jimmy Fallon has not revealed whether Young and White will perform anything off A Letter Home (the appearance is being billed as an interview), but odds are there will be some sort of performance.

A Letter Home will be released on vinyl, CD, and digital album download on May 27th. Additionally, a limited edition boxed version including a standard CD, standard 12", a 'direct feed from the booth' 12" recording, seven 6" clear vinyl singles, DVD, and download card will also be released May 27th.

Stream "If You Could Read My Mind" (Gordon Lightfoot) and "Needle Of Death" below to get a taste of the lo-fi recording.
