Deafheaven return with a new studio album titled New Bermuda on October 2nd. The band's last record, 2013's Sunbather, was so very epic that it was unreasonable to expect that they'd top it. Sunbather was an all-out metal assault mixed with beautiful, shimmering shoegaze -- much like chocolate and peanut butter the sonic blend was an unexpected mixing of styles, but yet, inexplicably  SO, SO, GOOD. Enter New Bermuda. It's not that the record is terrible, because on the contrary, New Bermuda is actually quite good...it's just a little disappointing due to the absence of shoegaze moments. But the album is solid nonetheless: the Slayer-ish moments are still there, the vocals are a bit more up in the mix, there's a bit more piano, and the songs still clock in at epic lengths -- the shortest song is 8 and a half minutes long.  One more awesome fact: the record was influenced by Red House Painters, Low, Wilco, and according to the band, the album's closer -- "Gifts For The Earth" -- is an homage to Oasis.

Bottom line: though initially a little disappointing compared to Sunbather due to lack of glistening, shimmering shoegaze moments, New Bermuda is worth checking out. Stream the record in full ahead of its release over at NPR.
