Sonic Evolution, the Seattle Symphony's annual event celebrating Seattle's rich musical history, took place last night at Benaroyal Hall. The first half of the evening featured a piece influenced by Kurt Cobain titled "Ashes," a Pearl Jam inspired piece "Beyond Much Difference," and finally another piece composed by Mike McCready titled "Waking The Horizon."  After the intermission was over the Chris Cornell-fronted Mad Season reunion and bonus surprise Temple Of The Dog reunion took place. Cornell, McCready, Barrett Martin, Matt Cameron, Duff McKagan, and the Seattle Symphony began with a trio of Mad Season songs, then later Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard took the stage for a few Temple of the Dog songs. During the evening, several other guests including Kim Virant (Lazy Susan) and Jeff Angell (Walking Papers), and Sean Kinney (Alice In Chains) also took the stage perform with the collective. The night ended on an emotional note -- the band performed Mad Season's "All Alone" using a recording of Layne Staley's haunting vocals.

The setlist and fan filmed video from the concert is available to view below. An excellent review of the show is posted here

01. "Ashes"
02. "Beyond Much Difference"
03. "Walking The Horizon"

04. "Long Gone Day"

The first authorized Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck debuted Saturday night at Sundance.  Cobain's estate gave director Brett Morgen unprecedented access to Cobain's archive which includes audio, video, photographs, notebooks, and more, though reportedly the only "never before heard" song in the film is Cobain's acoustic cover of the Beatles' "And I Love Her."

Much ado was made over the absence of commentary/interview clips from ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, however it wasn't an oversight, it was more of a scheduling issue with Grohl. Morgen told reporters that Grohl has participated in interviews for Montage of Heck, but due to time issues he was unable to include the footage in the version of the film that premiered on Saturday. Morgen suggested to reporters that he may re-edit the film at a later time to add in some commentary/insight from Grohl. Montage Of Heck is scheduled to premiere on HBO on May 4th.

Delerium returns with an an EP titled Glimmer on January 27th.  The lead track features vocals by Emily Haines of Metric and was recorded back in 2005.  Delerium mastermind Bill Leeb (Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy) explained in a press release that Delerium recently unearthed the long-forgotten song while digging through the band's archive:

"Glimmer reads a bit like a Hollywood mystery having been lost for years, has resurfaced by happenstance. When our music engineer and mixer, Greg Reely, was pilfering through some recordings, he stumbled upon this song that features Emily Haines of Metric. As it turns out, this track comes from the Chimera album sessions when I collaborated with Carmen Rizzo and Jamie Muhoberac. The song's words remind us even in the darkest moments when it seems all is lost, with perseverance and a little luck, we can find our own place and keep that glimmer of hope."

The EP features six tracks -- the single version of "Glimmer" along with five alternate versions/remixes -- and will be available to download from iTunes starting January 27th.  "Glimmer" will also be included on a forthcoming b-sides/rarities collection due out later this year (details still to be announced). Melvins' Dale Crover played drums for Nirvana during this show (at this point, Dave Grohl was still a member of Scream and hadn't joined Nirvana yet) and according to legend, Kurt Cobain met Courtney Love at this show.

Calgary's Viet Cong are set to release their highly anticipated debut album Viet Cong on January 20th. The album features seven songs filled with post-punk and psychedelic elements -- some tracks like "Continental Shelf" and "Silhouettes" have more of a Joy Division/Chameleons/Interpol sound; others have more of a 60's psychedelic vibe; and the final song, the 11 minute "Death" will just astound you with its intensity.

Viet Cong is a stellar, stellar record.  Though we're only two weeks into 2015 it's too soon to talk 'Best Albums of the Year,' but there's not doubt Viet Cong is going to be a 'Album of the Year' contender, at least in my world. "It's not just about the Ramones; it's my whole life story leading up to that, and afterwards. But, y'know, 95 percent of the time I was in a van with those guys, stuck in assigned seats, and you can't jump out the window or anything. So I wanted to tell people what it was really like."

An excerpt (full chapter) from the book is available to read here, and an interview with Ramone discussing the book is available to view below.  Pre-order Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As A Ramone from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, and Pledge Music.

Ramone will be hitting the road for a short tour to promote Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As A Ramone. Dates are posted below.  More details about each stop on the tour can be found on Marky Ramone's website.

Pittsburgh's Tragic Impulse debuted a pretty fun song titled "Mr. Stompy" this week. The industrial/electro track pokes fun at "Mr. Stompy" aka the annoying person at the dance club who hogs the entire dancefloor, and while doing so, pokes/rams/slams into others with blatant disregard.  You've seen this play out a zillion times and it's always annoying, so let's revel in the satire!

Stream "Mr. Stompy" below and grab it as a name-your-own-price download from Bandcamp.

Afghan Whigs premiered the official video for the song "The Lottery," which is the latest single from the band's stellar album Do To The Beast. At first glance you might think this is some non-official video a fan uploaded onto You Tube, because the entire clip is footage of a tattooed guy dancing around to the song. But as it turns out the man in the video is the Afghan Whigs' monitor engineer Ryan O'HaraGreg Dulli explains the significance:

"Meet Ryan O'Hara, our monitor engineer and cougar magnet. He wakes up everyday with a smile on his face and something positive to share with you. Every night during the gig he performs a parallel show behind the board and it's phenomenal to watch. Occasionally, I'll forget to sing because I'm watching him turn into Bez from Happy Mondays. But that's rock and roll for you. It keeps you young."

Pretty cool stuff. Check out the video for "The Lottery" below:

Erratic on-again, off-again electro hip hop band Death Grips called it quits last year just weeks before they were scheduled to hit the road with Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails (much to Trent Reznor's dismay). Today the DG dudes surprised us all and dropped a new album titled Fashion Week. The instrumental album is packed with sweet driving beats and is available to download for free (legal download). Grab it here and stream it in full below via Pitchfork.

It looks like the classic shoegaze world should prepare for more good news: Curve may very well be reuniting in 2015. The band's Facebook page, run by founding member Dean Garcia, had been pretty dormant for most of 2014 however near the end of the year the page sprang back in action.  The latest update, posted on January 1st, is a picture of Curve with the caption "2015 has a nice ring to it!"  So it might just happen...

In the meantime, stream Curve's b-sides and rarities collection Rare and Unreleased. The compilation was self-released by the band in 2010 and is available to purchase digitally through Bandcamp.

Bono encapsulated 2014 with a big long post on U2's official website. The post, titled Little Book Of A Big Year: Bono's A to Z of 2014 was written after his recent shoulder accident, which sidelined U2's album launch festivities, and required Bono to take some pretty massive painkillers.  He revealed to fans that during his downtime he decided to look back and review his year in an attempt to learn from his mistakes. The missive is a whole lot of Bono, so the more casual U2 fan may want to just quickly scroll through it, while hardcore fans will likely savor every Bono morsel.

Interestingly enough, the "I" entry of Bono's posting was his commentary on the iTunes release and aftermath of Songs of Innocence and can be read below. The full A to Z posting is available to view here.

"Our album was to be like a bottle of milk dropped at the door of anyone interested in music and iTunes. As I understand it, the journey from the front door to the fridge and into what to some people felt was their bowl of cereal has something to do with a switch called "automatic download" — if you turn it on, you sign up for being pushed stuff.

That's about it...no flagrant abuse of human rights, but very annoying to people who a) like being annoyed, and/or b) felt it was like someone robbing their phone in the pub and taking a couple of photos before leaving it back on the table... some kind of breach of privacy which was really not intended. I empathise with the b)'s, but for the a)'s I've started referring them to the philosopher Jimmy Kimmel.

That Apple remains a music company is the best news for any one who wakes up with a melody in their head or wanting to hear one. Apple is unique in big tech in trying to get artists paid. That they would agree to pay Universal for SONGS of INNOCENCE, and then gift it to all the people who still believe music is worth paying for, both makes sense and is a beautiful thing."
