The music world mourns the shocking loss of innovator, icon and musical genius -- Prince has died at the age of 57. According to reports, Prince was found unconscious today at the Paisley Park studios and was unable to be revived. The official cause of death has not been announced, but he was recently hospitalized and treated for "a bad flu" according to his management team. Prince's last performance was April 14th at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

R.I.P.

Cinema Detroit will honor Prince by screening the classic 1984 film Purple Rain next week (starting Monday). More details on that are posted here.

Johnny Marr announced his highly anticipated autobiograpy, Set Me Free, will be published November 3rd. In a posting on his official site, Marr explained the meaning behind the book's title:

"I wanted to convey a feeling of breaking free, that has been a constant throughout my life. A feeling that expresses itself as both escape and discovery. Transcendence. I found it through rock ‘n’ roll and art and a journey living both in the modern world."

Marr didn't elaborate on the finished product, but he has discussed the autobiography in interviews over the past year. Last March he told the BBC he was writing the book without the help of a journalist or ghost writer and it won't focus solely on his time with the Smiths:

"I want it to be my own voice, so I'm writing it...I'm not using a ghostwriter or journalist or anything like that, and I'm just relying on a very, very good memory"

"I got known for what I do by the time I was 19, 20, you know. And there's a lot of life after the Smiths, you know? Obviously I want remember the Smiths and I want to honor the Smiths, and I want to be honest about the Smiths, but there's been a lot of living in between then and now too, so I want to balance it. It's not all going to be super early 80's, you know."

Last July Marr was still working on the book. At that time he told the BBC his goal was to give fans an authentic and truthful representation of his life and experiences:

"If people already kind of like what I do, records and all of that, if by the end of the book they want to hang out with me, then that's the job done, really. I want to celebrate a lucky life...it's not going to be a Disney thing, I want to be straight-headed about things, I want it to be like my life, intense and interesting and a lot of joy in it, and some of the other stuff that has been more mysterious, I want to represent that properly. I want to cover the whole thing."

Marr's autobiography should be a most compelling read. Set Me Free arrives November 3rd. So far pre-order info has not been announced.

Ministry's Al Jourgensen has returned with a new musical project titled Surgical Meth Machine. The band's debut album, which was released Friday, is a bit on the eclectic side. Sure, there are a few metal/thrash songs -- not unlike Ministry's output from the 90's and beyond -- but there are also several tracks on the album that might seem more in line with some of the awesomely weird shit Uncle Al recorded with his old Wax Trax side projects, particularly Revolting Cocks.

To illustrate, check out the vivid, campy video for "I'm Invisible" which features a ton of swanky & colorful Al Jourgensens. Oh and there's also a bizarre random moment featuring a Nickelback cd:

This probably won't shock you, but Jourgensen admitted in a recent Billboard interview that he was pretty out of it during the recording of the album:

"We were stoned out of our gourd and deep into existential territory the whole time we were recording, from what I remember of it. For me, though, SMM is songs that write the band and not a band that writes the songs, which is a back-assward way of working, but it seems to work for me. And I’m in a good place right now [thanks to] my California weed card!"

Listen to another track below titled "I Don't Wanna," which reunites Jourgensen with his Lard partner-in-crime Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys):

And finally here's one of the thrashier songs, "Tragic Alert"

Surgical Meth Machine is available now via Nuclear Blast. Order from iTunes, Amazon, or the Nuclear Blast store.

We're getting closer to the release of Richard Ashcroft's solo album These People, which arrives May 20th. Last month Ashcroft debuted the first single and video for "This Is How It Feels" and now he's issued another track, a surprisingly poppy, intensely sugar-coated number titled "Hold On." A Northern Soul it is not. However it is super catchy in a riding-down-the-freeway-with-the-top-down sort of way. If nothing else, it'll make fans even more eager to hear what else Ashcroft has up his sleeve on the full length record. Indeed it is wonderful Ashcroft is inspired to create new music, and who knows where he'll take us next.

These People will be released on May 20th. Pre-order from iTunes, Amazon, or Richard Ashcroft's official store.

Radiohead insider Brian Message was interviewed earlier today during a speaking engagement at a pub in London. During the discussion, Message reportedly revealed that Radiohead's new album will be out in June and will sound like "nothing you've ever heard." The highly anticipated album still doesn't have an official release date, and most industry insiders are expecting a "surprise" release, much like the release of Radiohead's last album The King Of Limbs.

[UPDATE: Message is part of Radiohead's management team, he is NOT Radiohead's manager. Still, he's certainly an insider and has insight into what the band's new music sounds like).

Radiohead's last release was "Spectre," which the band wrote for the 2015 Bond film.  The film's producers rejected Radiohead's composition, however the band released the track as a free download on Christmas.

Don't let the band name fool you, Montreal's Elephant Stone is NOT a Stone Roses cover band -- they are one of the vital acts in today's psych scene. To date the trio has released three solid and swoonworthy full length albums -- The Three Poisons (2014), Elephant Stone (2013), and The Seven Seas (2009) -- and their fourth album, Ship of Fools, is coming later this year. While the band hasn't announced the official release date for Ship of Fools yet, they have premiered three singles from the album -- "The Devil's Shelter," "Where I'm Going," and "Andromeda."  All three songs are so infectious and glorious that you almost have to drool knowing even more Elephant Stone songs will be unleashed soon.  Prepare yourself for awesomeness and stream all three singles below:

"The Devil's Shelter," released last November, is a slice of excellence and features the awesome Alex Maas of the Black Angels!  View the official video below and download the single from iTunes & Amazon:

"Where I'm At" is by far the catchiest, synthiest, and grooviest of the three tracks -- you won't be able to sit still while this jam is playing! Download from iTunes (so far no listing on Amazon):

"Andromeda," the sublime Beatles-esque third single from Ship of Fools was released in March. Download from iTunes & Amazon:
