Producer John Leckie has worked with legions of incredible bands over the years including Ride, Radiohead, The Stone Roses, The Verve, The Fall, Trash Can Sinatras, XTC, and Magazine. Leckie recently sat down with Iain McNay, founder of Cherry Red Records to discuss his incredible career as part of Cherry Red's Adventures In Music television series. The two part video interview is a fascinating window into music recording and is recommended for anyone show shares a love of music, especially U.K. music, and music history.

The interview begins with Leckie explaining how he began as a tape operator at Abbey Road where he worked alongside the Beatles on their solo projects, and detailed how he was able to advance to become an engineer and eventually a producer. Throughout he shared stories about bands he's worked with: "rude and aggressive" Public Image Ltd, the "fun, loud rock and roll" of The Fall, and how he's especially proud of producing Magazine's Real Life, an album he considers timeless.

Leckie discussed recording the seminal debut album from The Stone Roses, revealing there were "good vibes" in the recording studio for the entire 55 day process. He called the Roses "good fun to be with," "well rehearsed," and contrasted that with the recording of The Second Coming, which took much longer to record and was an overall dramatically different experience because the bond between band members had deteriorated.

As time went on bands requested to work with Leckie, though he turned many down. The one and only band that he actively pursued was the Verve -- he revealed he knew he had to work with them after seeing their "classic cosmic psychedelic" live show and was blown away by their guitar sounds he hadn't heard before. He's pleased he produced the seminal A Storm In Heaven but suggests it would have been even better had the songs been kept longer (the band's label Virgin requested the songs be chopped from 10 minutes to a more radio friendly three or four minutes).

Other fun stories include Leckie discussing how he recorded XTC's early material on the sly because his studio wouldn't allow him to do it, how Radiohead were in awe of Ride, and confirmation that Syd Barrett really did mysteriously appear in the studio during Pink Floyd's recording of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."

And there are so many more great stories...

Watch the interview below -- the interview is cut up into two parts: part one focuses on Leckie's beginnings, includes stories about the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Be Bop Deluxe, XTC and Public Image Ltd. Part two focuses mostly on the late 80's and 90's era with stories about The Stone Roses, The Verve, Radiohead, Alan McGee, and the evolving music industry.

Society, brainchild of UK producer James Girdler, have been around for almost five years making groovy soul-psych jams.  They previously released an EP and a few one-off singles (notably 2015's "Protocol") but now they've unleashed their debut album All That We've Become. The album compiles some of their previously released material (the title track was originally released in 2012) along with some excellent new songs. Of note the new track "Commiserations" is slinky, soothing, and oh so addictive that you should stop what you're doing immediately and stream below:

So, so, so good!

The Sisters Of Mercy have been out on tour and are about to wrap things up later this month with a string of dates in the U.K.  Though the band's last album was released back in 1990, over the years they've performed some new material at their shows.  As it turns out, it looks like fans may just get a brand new Sisters record in the future if Andrew Eldritch keeps his promise.

In an interview with Team Rock back in June, Eldritch gave many reasons NOT to make an album -- time, effort, money, society's devaluation of music, and discord between the band and their (now ex) record label.  However near the end of that same interview the topic of discussion turned to the U.S. presidential election and Eldritch dropped this bomb:

"If Donald Trump actually does become President, that will be reason enough for me to release another album. I don't think I could keep quiet if that happened."

Your move, Andrew!

Morrissey's show in Boulder was canceled last night after keyboardist Gustavo Manzur fell ill. Morrissey initially came on stage and told fans that the show would be delayed, explaining "We can't move until we know what’s happened to him...We're going to sit backstage for awhile and wait to see what's happened to him, if there’s any magical cure." Not long afterwards Jesse Tobias came back out to apologize and officially cancel the show.

According to an update on True To You Manzur collapsed and was hospitalized prior to the Boulder show and he's now in the hospital recuperating.   According to the official statement, he'll need to rest for a week, but "Gustavo and the band are determined to make the shows at Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago." Lush announced their reunion has come to an end. The news isn't all that surprising -- last month original bassist Phil King announced his departure, and though the band told fans they were looking for a replacement it seemed likely the end was near. In the statement, Lush thanked fans for their support and revealed they'll play their final show November 25th at Manchester Academy with Michael Conroy (Modern English) helping out on bass.

Read the official statement from Lush below:

"It’s been a fantastic year for Lush. We received an incredible reception to our Blind Spot EP and the three beautiful career-spanning 4AD releases, sold out two Roundhouse shows, toured North America with great success and had a ball at our European festival appearances. It’s been wonderful to revisit our old music and to create new material.

However, it is now time for us to return to our families and homes, and bring our time together as a band to a close. We offer heartfelt thanks to all our fans – this reunion would never have happened without your overwhelming support and dedication.

We would like to take this opportunity to announce that, for our last-ever performance at Manchester Academy on November 25th, Emma, Miki and Justin will be joined by former 4AD label mate Michael Conroy, bass player for Modern English. As with Justin’s involvement, Michael playing with Lush has a special significance for us as he was a very close friend of Chris’s."

My Bloody Valentine's masterpiece Loveless was released 25 years ago (November 4th, 1991). The flawless album is widely regarded as the quintessential shoegaze record -- the record that defines the genre; the textbook example of shoegaze glory. Loveless is one of the best and most influential albums of all time.  It is a record that continues to inspire, and its beautiful noise is simply breathtaking upon first or five-millionth listen.  Indeed Loveless is the gold standard, not just for shoegaze, but for life.

Temple of the Dog kicked off their first ever tour last night in Philadelphia. As Chris Cornell explained previously, Temple of the Dog reunited to do the one thing they never got to do -- "play shows and see what it feels like to be the band that we walked away from 25 years ago." Fans enjoyed the ultimate musical gift last night as Cornell, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron triumphantly ripped through a 23 song set filled with their classic songs, plus covers from Mother Love Bone, the Cure, David Bowie, and more. Afghan Whigs revealed some heavy news today -- guitarist Dave Rosser, who performed with Afghan Whigs, Gutter Twins, and Twilight Singers has been diagnosed with inoperable colon cancer. Two charity shows to help raise funds to combat Rosser's medical bills have been announced: Afghan Whigs will perform the band's 1996 album Black Love in its entirety at the shows December 10th in New Orleans and December 14th in Los Angeles.  Several guest performers, including Mark Lanegan, Ani Difranco, and Moby, will also be appearing.

From Greg Dulli's statement:

"Dave Rosser has been my close friend and bandmate for over a decade now. By doing these shows for him we hope to ease any financial stress he may face as he pursues treatment to combat his illness. 100% of the proceeds from these shows will go to his medical care. I'm hopeful that folks will come out and show their support for Dave who will be performing with us."

For all the details on the shows, visit the Afghan Whigs' website.

Fans interested in donating to Rosser's medical fund can do so here.

Afghan Whigs previously announced they'll release a 20th anniversary edition of Black Love on November 25th. The new edition is remastered and expanded to include 9 previously unreleased demos/outtakes. Read more about the release here. Pre-order through Amazon.
