Despite 2016 being a cruel and unforgiving year, so much great music made the heartbreaking 2016 somehow more tolerable. We present the official Hang The DJ list of the Top Albums of 2016. Prepare for outrage.

Albums 1 through 20 are posted below. Albums 40 - 21 are posted here.

20. Richard Ashcroft These People

Ashcroft decided to resurrect his solo career after getting bit by the creative bug again. Though reviews for his fourth solo record (fifth if you count United Nations of Sound as a solo record) were quite negative, Ashcroft has delivered a fantastic pop record. Make no mistake, it's NOT A Northern Soul and doesn't match (nor does it try to match) the majestic splendor of the Verve. But it's 2016/2017 and Ashcroft isn't nostalgic for days of yore.  These People is Richard moving on and embracing where he is now.

Stream These People on Spotify or You Tube. Purchase from Richard Ashcroft or Amazon.

19. Alcest - Kodama

Alcest returned to their roots for the intense and mesmerizing Kodama.

Stream Kodama in full on You Tube or Spotify. Purchase from Amazon.

18. Stephen's Shore Ocean Blue

The pretty pastel cover art is eye catching, but the music offers so much more -- magnificent, shimmery dream pop. So lovely.

Stream Ocean Blue EP on Spotify or Bandcamp. Purchase from Bandcamp.

17. Teenage Fanclub Here

Creation powerpop darlings return with a collection of impeccable indie pop gems.

Stream Here on Spotify or You Tube . Purchase from Merge or Amazon.

16. Dinosaur Jr Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not

This legendary band is so very underappreciated. Their early records are amazing and highly influential, but their records since their reunion also deserve recognition.

Stream Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not in full on You Tube or Spotify. Purchase from Dinosaur Jr or Amazon.

15. TOY Clear Shot

The London psych band return with their lush and addictive third studio album.

Stream Clear Shot in full on Spotify or You Tube. Purchase from Heavenly Recordings or Amazon.

14. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Skeleton Tree

Cave channeled grief from unfathomable personal tragedy and composed a heartbreaking masterpiece.

Stream Skeleton Tree in full on Spotify or You Tube . Purchase from Nick Cave or Amazon.

13. Motorama Dialogues

NOTE: Two different bands record under the name Motorama. We are featuring the Russian band Motorama (website, Facebook).

Motorama mostly abandoned the dark post-punk guitar and vocals featured on their earlier albums and have delivered an album full of delightful driving synth pop.

Stream Dialogues on Spotify or Bandcamp. Purchase from Amazon or Bandcamp.

12. Preoccupations Preoccupations

(Previously known as Viet Cong). Don't let their new name fool you -- Preoccupations may sound like a bland name, but the music is truly passionate and cosmic. The stunning 11 minute opus "Memory" (featuring Dan Boeckner) will take you on a trip through several mind blowing dimensions.

Stream Preoccupations in full on Spotify, You Tube or Bandcamp. Purchase from Bandcamp or Amazon.

11. Flyying Colours Mindfullness

After teasing fans with one-off singles and EPs for years, the Australian shoegazers finally dropped a FULL slice of perfection. A stunning, brilliant and swoonworthy debut album.

Stream Mindfullness in full on Spotify or  You Tube. Purchase from Amazon.

10. Operators Blue Wave

Dan Boeckner is best known for his work in Wild Nothings and Handsome Furs, but his Operators side project blows both of those away. Blue Wave is heavenly synth pop, owing a great deal to New Order and particularly Peter Hook.

Stream Blue Wave in full on Spotify or You Tube. Purchase from Amazon.

09. The Radio Dept Running Out Of Love

The dazzling, yet politically charged new album from the Swedish dreampoppers was several years in the making, but well worth the wait.

Philadelphia's noise kings perfected their mix of convulsive and crushing shoegaze on their flawless second full length record.

Stream Tired Of Tomorrow on Spotify, You Tube or Bandcamp. Purchase from Bandcamp or Amazon.

05. Black Marble It's Immaterial

Murky, mysterious and so very enchanting, Black Marble have returned with a post-punk slice of heaven.

04. Dead Horse One Season Of Mist

French psychedelic/shoegazers continue to impress and mesmerize with soaring anthems.

03. Bloody Knives I Will Cut Your Heart Out For This

Propulsive. Throbbing. Intense. Noisy. Brutal. Deadly.

Stream I Will Cut Your Heart Out For This on Spotify, You Tube or Bandcamp. Purchase from Bandcamp or Amazon.

02. Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool

Radiohead's elegant, orchestral and atmospheric ninth studio album A Moon Shaped Pool raises more questions than it answers and renewed my obsession with this phenomenal band. Broken hearts, let it rain.

Stream A Moon Shaped Pool on Spotify. Purchase from Radiohead or Amazon.

01. David Bowie Blackstar

To say 2016 was a rough year would be an understatement as so many musical and creative legends were cruelly taken from us. David Bowie was peaced out on January 10th, but kindly left us with his remarkable swan song -- the brilliant jazz-fused Blackstar. Even while battling cancer and fighting for his life he was able to tap into his creative genius. Blackstar is a tearful, yet triumphant listen.

Stream Blackstar on Spotify or You Tube. Purchase from David Bowie official store or Amazon.

Iggy tears it up with all-star backing band Josh Homme, Dean Fertita, and Matt Helders.

Stream Post Pop Depression in full: You Tube & Spotify. Purchase here or here.

38. The Mission Another Another Fall From Grace

The Mission's Wayne Hussey describes Another Fall From Grace as the missing link between First & Last & Always and God's Own Medicine. He's not wrong. Martin Gore and Gary Numan also lend their talents to this dark, desolate album.

Stream Another Fall From Grace in full on Spotify or You Tube. Purchase from the Mission's store or Amazon.

37. Bob Mould Patch The Sky

If you thought Mould was emotionally tapped out after the ferocity and intensity of 2014's Beauty & Ruin, you were mistaken.

Stream Patch The Sky in full on You Tube or Spotify. Purchase from Merge or Amazon.

36. James Girl At The End Of The World

Largely ignored in North America, James have been making extraordinary albums for 30(!) years. Girl At The End Of The World is essential indie pop.

Stream This Moment on Spotify. Purchase from 4AD or Amazon.

30. Lush Blind Spot EP

The Lush reunion lasted a little over a year, but at least it produced one of 2016's best tours and a brilliant new EP. Blind Spot picked up where Lush left off 20 years ago without missing a beat.

(Blind Spot not available on streaming services). Purchase from Lush or Amazon.

29. Curelight Wounds Wearing The Strings

Beautiful noisy shoegaze & post-punk from Brooklyn.

Stream Wearing The Strings on Spotify and Bandcamp . Purchase from Amazon or Bandcamp.

28. The Vacant Lots Berlin EP

Ever since releasing their debut album in 2014 The Vacant Lots have turned into one of the most exciting bands within the psychedelic music scene.  The mighty Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre agrees -- he mixed, produced, and plays on this magnificent record.

Stream Berlin on Spotify and You Tube Purchase from Vacant Lots or Amazon.

27. Nine Inch Nails Not The Actual Events

Trent Reznor promised he'd release new NIN in 2016, and in December he delivered the soundtrack to this brutal soulless year. The five song EP has a little bit of NIN for everyone, but the pummeling final track "Burning Bright (Fields On Fire)" is the crown jewel of the release.

Not long ago shoegaze legends Ride announced they've been working on their first studio album in 20 years with producer Erol Alkan. The band has now confirmed that the album is due out next summer and is still untitled.  Andy Bell also revealed a few more exciting and intriguing details to Uncut: the "trashy and poppy" yet "ambient and psychedelic" album was recorded over 17 days and features material that developed from jams Ride recorded at soundchecks while on tour.  From the interview*:

"There's a couple where one person has brought in the entire thing, but there are far more where we've jammed out something and one of us has taken the initiative to do the melody and words, or some other permutation of it all. At times, it's quite trashy and poppy and other times it's quite ambient and psychedelic. It's equal parts Motorhead and William Basinski. Aggressive ambience!"

Ride's new album is sure to be a phenomenal sonic experience! Catch up with Ride on their official website, Facebook, and Twitter.

*The interview is part of Uncut's 2017 preview which is only available to subscribers, however Ride posted a scan of the interview here.

Morrissey has gotten into the spirit of Christmas. The legend shared a few pictures of himself with a cigar (festive!) and penned a few words about animals and animal cruelty on True To You. The posting titled Morry Christmas From Merrissey, 2016 can be viewed here.

Peter Murphy just wrapped up his Stripped tour, which featured the legend performing stripped down versions of career-spanning classics (Bauhaus, solo material, covers). Now Murphy has revealed that fans who missed the tour will have an opportunity to enjoy some of Stripped at home. He's releasing a live album titled Bare-Boned & Sacred which features 12 songs captured live during the New York stop of the tour. The tracklisting has not been posted, though it is confirmed that a cover of David Bowie's "Belway Brothers" will be included. Pre-order Bare-Boned & Sacred through Metropolis Records.

Meanwhile, Murphy has revealed he's working on other projects and has "so many plans afoot" so it sounds like 2017 may be an exciting one for Peter Murphy fans. Read more about that here.

Nine Inch Nails unearthed their first set of songs since 2013's Hesitation Marks today, lead by the first single "Burning Bright (Field On Fire)." Trent said of the EP "It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make."  And he didn't lie.

Nine Inch Nails are back with a darkness, heaviness and intensity not seen/heard for some time.  Stream the phenomenal "Burning Bright (Field On Fire)" here.

The physical edition of Not The Actual Events is available to pre-order (ships in the spring) but comes with an immediate download. The high resolution digital download is available now exclusively from NIN's store. The EP will be released through other digital platforms tomorrow (December 23rd).

You know what to do.

"Digital formats and streaming are great and certainly convenient, but the ideal way I’d hope a listener experience my music is to grab a great set of headphones, sit with the vinyl, drop the needle, hold the jacket in your hands looking at the artwork (with your fucking phone turned off) and go on a journey with me."

Paul Weller returns with a new studio album titled A Kind Revolution in the spring. The Modfather teased the album last week on social media, and today confirmed the title of the album and a few other details in an interview with Uncut

He told the mag A Kind Revolution includes some material written around the time of Saturns Patterns, though most of the songs were written in 2016. The album includes a few guests including Boy George, who is featured on a song titled "One Tear":

"It's quite housey. George sings the first verse and then he comes in on the chorus. Our voices sound really good together."

Weller also briefly discussed another project -- he wrote the soundtrack to the upcoming film Jawbone, which is expected out in the first quarter of 2017.

Weller promises more details on A Kind Revolution and the Jawbone soundtrack will be announced in early 2017.

A collection of songs that New Order produced/remixed and released on Factory Records circa 1982 - 1985 is set for release early next year. Back in 1981, all four members of New Order (Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Gillian Gilbert) used the generic Be Music moniker for their production work, remixing/producing songs for Quando Quando, Section 25, A Certain Ratio, and many others. As New Order's popularity rose in the mid-80's, the band eventually abandoned Be Music to focus on producing their own material (as opposed to other bands' material), but recently Stephen Morris resurrected the Be Music name for recent remix efforts involving Factory Floor, Tim Burgess and Fujiya & Miyagi.

New Order Presents Be Music will be released February 17th as a standard 2 LP set or expanded 3 CD set. One of the noteworthy bonus tracks included on the 3 CD set (but not the LP edition) is the 1979 recording of Section 25's "Knew Noise" produced by Joy Division's Ian Curtis and Rob Gretton.
