The creative team behind Iceland: Beyond Sigur Ros is filming a new documentary--this time about the current music scene in Manchester, England. The 90 minute film Manchester: Beyond Oasis sets out to explore the indie scene in the legendary city, following over 40 bands and featuring interviews with key players from the scene. The film is still a work in progress, but you can take a look at the official trailer below:

Paul Weller is set to release a new cd (his 11th solo cd!), Sonik Kicks, on March 26th. The album's first single, "That Dangerous Age" will be released digitally on March 11th. The digital single will feature a remix by Arctic Monkeys' drummer Matt Helders and another remix by Ladytron. Depeche Mode

According to a short article posted on a Depeche Mode page for fans in Germany/Austria/Switzerland, it appears Alan Wilder may either be working with Martin Gore on a new project, or possibly even on the forthcoming new Depeche Mode record which is expected early next year. I had to use Google Translate to read the page, so a little is, shall we say, lost in translation. Take a look at the original post (in German) and the translated page.

Meanwhile another Depeche Mode biography hit bookshelves recently. Just Can't Get Enough: The Making Of Depeche Mode by Simon Spence is out now and according to a few reviewers, does a good job of detailing the band's early days through the Black Celebration era. I don't even know what to make of this Echo & The Bunnymen remix. On the one hand, it annoys me, because adding fat/phat dance beats ruins the beauty of the song. On the other hand, the remix sort of works in a bizarre way.

"Step By Step" (New Kids On The Block) was originally available on the long out of print Favorite Spanish Dishes EP from 1991, but the song found light of day again on the import only Lemonheads' best of Laughing All The Way To The Cleaners.

Finally, in 1996 the Lemonheads recorded both an acoustic and plugged-in version of Whitney Houston's classic "How Will I Know" for the If I Could Talk I'd Tell You expanded cd single in 1996:

A few weeks ago news leaked that David Grohl was working on a documentary about the legendary recording studio Sound City, and in particular, the recording console used to record tons of classic albums. The trailer for the documentary was released today and reveals a TON of big names--Trent Reznor, Butch Vig, Frank Black, Josh Homme, Lars Ulrich, even Barry Manilow and Rick Springfield are featured!

Last year D.O. Roth, a German video director took Joy Division's 1979 performance of "Transmission" and created a Playmobil version of it. Clearly the musicians are happier than any member of Joy Division would ever be, but if you've never seen the video, it's worth a look:

As Lost In E Minor reports, a new Playmobil video from Roth has surfaced--this time for a song by Manchester band The Slow Readers Club. Brian Jonestown Massacre's Anton Newcombe is preparing to release a record from the spacey/psychedelic/mysticore Minneapolis band Magic Castles on his record label March 19th. The track posted below, "Battle Of The Golden Bird," was released on their 2008 record The Lore Of Mysticore, but will also be featured on their upcoming self-titled release. Glancing at the tracklisting for Magic Castles, it appears that a few other songs from their 2008 record will also be re-released. So far a digital listing for Magic Castles isn't available on iTunes or Amazon, but you can view the tracklisting and pre-order a vinyl copy on import here.

Shoplifters Of The World

Back in 1987 when The Smiths announced their breakup, urban legend has it a man was in such despair over the news he took a radio station hostage and forced the DJ to play Smiths songs over and over. Now a film based on that event is in the works according to this report. Shoplifters Of The World will start shooting in June, and offer has been made to Russell Brand to play the DJ. The film will indeed feature a lot of Smiths music--the filmmakers have gotten the go ahead to use at least 20 songs from the band's catalog. Check out the full report in ScreenDaily.com

Miike Snow's new record, Happy To You, drops next month. According to Christian Karlsson the album title has nothing to do with any of the songs on the record--the phrase "Happy To You" was featured on a sign in the recording studio and it kind of stuck with them. Edinburgh's The Machine Room will drop an ep titled Love From A Distance on March 5th. Sonically I'd describe them as a more upbeat, dancier type of dreampop. They've also been described as Edinburgh's version of The Smiths which I don't think accurately describes them, though it's a fun comparison. It doesn't really matter how to label the band, just LISTEN to them. I was drawn into the Machine Room after hearing only the first 30 seconds of EP opener "The Cost Of Progress." The late Kirsty MacColl was featured in AV Club's series The Single File yesterday. The series spotlights artists, offers up deep cuts, and is just cool in general. The writer, Will Harris did an awesome job with the piece on MacColl and you should check it out the entire article here.

I'm not sure if it's right or wrong, but even though MacColl had her own career, wrote her own songs, and worked with many spectacular acts, I always think of The Smiths when I hear MacColl's name probably because of her cover of "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby," and as the AV Club piece points out, she was featured on "Ask" and "Golden Lights" from the Smiths.

She also wrote a song that comedienne Tracy Ullman turned into an MTV hit. Back in the day MTV played Ullman's Supremes-esque version a LOT and I didn't even realize it was a cover until years later!

Dead Leaf Echo

Dreampop fans may already be familiar with New York City's Dead Leaf Echo. To date, the band has released a couple of EPs (Truth and Versimilitude), opened for Chapterhouse and A Place To Bury Strangers, and worked with producer/mixer John Fryer (Depeche Mode, NIN, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil). Fryer also mixed the band's debut full length Thought & Language, which is expected out later this year (release date is still to be announced). While you're waiting for the full length, check out the album's first single, "Kingmaker" which just dropped digitally last week.

The good news on Pulp keeps coming! NME has announced Pulp as the recipients of NME's Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music Award (not to be confused with the Brit Awards' Outstanding Contribution To Music Award which will be presented to Blur on February 21st). Pulp will not only attend the February 29th ceremony in London, but they'll also perform live. The band made the following comment about being named the winner:

"I guess we always knew we stood out - but to be called 'outstanding' is great. Thank you."

Noel Gallagher's second solo record he recorded with Amorphous Androgynous may be delayed according to an interview with Faster Louder. Gallagher made the following comments during the interview:

“I can’t talk too much about that record because it’s yet to be mixed and the mixes that I have done of it or have been done of it, I’ve not been happy with and I’m all about the mixing.”

Gallagher revealed previously that during the AA sessions he showed up and recorded the record with a ton of people in the studio--and despite him not knowing who many of them were he thought the collaboration was, in his words, "f'ing far out." Even though this second solo record may be delayed, Gallagher will still release the first song from the AA session--a song titled "Shoot A Hole In The Sun" will be the b-side to the new High Flying Birds single, "Dream On" which drops next month.

How The Brits Rocked America, Episode 1 & 2

A BBC documentary examining British music in America debuted on British television last week. How The Brits Rocked America: Go West is divided into 3-hourlong episodes. Episode 1, How The West Was Won focuses on 60's artists, Episode 2, Stairway To Heaven examines the 70's scene, and Episode 3, We're The Kids In America looks at the 80's.

So far the first two episodes have debuted on the BBC and the third episode is scheduled to debut this Friday night. Episode 3 reportedly features The Cure, The Smiths, Echo & The Bunnymen and other 80's artists, and hopefully it'll be uploaded to YouTube. Morrissey autobiography

Last year in a BBC interview, Morrissey revealed he had written about 600 pages of his autobiography, and at the time he predicted the book would be out by the end of 2012 (you can still listen to the interview here, by the way). Well, brace yourself, as the Guardian first revealed last month it looks like the autobiography is indeed coming by year's end--after the massive bidding war it turns out Moz has allegedly signed a publishing deal with Penguin Books. Hopefully Moz is receiving a huge amount of money for what promises to be the read of the year (maybe even the decade!) and December cannot come soon enough!

Pulp fans rejoice! The BBC 3 documentary, The Story Of Common People has been uploaded to YouTube! If you haven't seen this before (I hadn't until today) the entire film centers around "Common People," Pulp's 1996 smash song. The hour long documentary reveals fun facts behind the song including: Jarvis Cocker wrote the keyboard parts himself (much to the dismay of the rest of the band), the song is about a Greek girl he really did meet in art school, and Cocker sort of choreographed the video (including Michael Jacksonesque dance moves) himself.

There's a ton of great interview footage with Cocker and other key players. You'll also get to see Cocker on a television game show, there's interview footage with his mom, and the guys from Franz Ferdinand even appear for a few talking heads. Good times!

If you're into shoegaze or dreampop, you should really take a listen to Nottingham, England's Spotlight Kid--they cite My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, Lush, and Swervedriver as influences. If you like any of those classic shoegaze/dreampop bands, Spotlight Kid will definitely not disappoint. The band has been releasing music since 2006, with their second full length, Disaster Tourist dropping back in the fall. Disaster Tourist is available digitally on Amazon and iTunes or you can order the physical cd as an import. iTunes also has the band's first full length record Departure as a digital download in case you want to go back further into their catalog (you will). Bon Iver are performing on Saturday Night Live tonight and according to Spin you can expect to hear the latest single "Holocene" as well as Bon Iver album closer "Beth/Rest." "Beth/Rest" is such an interesting choice for national television--many fans of the record slammed the song for being too cheesy and 80's influenced, but I think it is SO amazing. Should be fun to see how they pull it off live on television. I'm already anticipating the barrage of disses sure to be spewing out of the mouths/keyboards of those who only heard of Bon Iver after the Grammy nominations were announced (the 'who is Arcade Fire' type of crowd).

Though Bon Iver are up for several Grammys, the band will not be performing at the ceremony. According to comments Justin Vernon made to Billboard, the band were asked to perform, but only as part of a collaboration with another (unnamed) act:

"We wanted to play our music, but were told that we couldn't play. We had to do a collaboration with someone else"

Shame on you, Grammy organizers. Yet another black mark on NARAS, and really, was there room for another black mark? Awarding Arcade Fire a Grammy can't erase all the other craptastic moves they've made (and CLEARLY are continuing to make) over the years.

By the way, for those who are also annoyed with all things Grammy I'd highly recommend Ology's Grammy coverage which includes the awesome Anti-Grammy awards.

Finally, here's an old story about the Cramps that you might be entertained by:

Back in 1991 the Cramps were on tour and had a show booked at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit. A few hours before the show Lux Interior and Poison Ivy drove over to the 89X studios (in Canada) to do a live on air interview. As it turned out getting into Canada and to 89X wasn't an issue but unfortunately their experience getting back into the U.S. wasn't so smooth. Apparently they didn't have appropriate ID to prove they were U.S. citizens, so they got detained at Customs. If you've ever been hauled into Customs for any reason you know it can be a pretty lengthy and frustrating ordeal, and the band started to worry they wouldn't be back in Detroit in time for the show. As luck would have it, someone who worked at Customs was walking by the secondary area and recognized Lux Interior and Poison Ivy and were able to help get the band released in time for the show in Detroit. Close call!

93 Million Miles From The Sun

Sometimes you luck out and stumble upon a band that is just perfect. I stumbled upon such a band yesterday and fell in love with them totally and completely. 93 Million Miles From The Sun blew me away with their shoegazed, textured, epically swirling guitars and I'll be honest, I have no idea if they named themselves after the Swervedriver song or not, but I'm going to go ahead and assume they did, because that just adds to the awesomeness of this band.

93 Million Miles From The Sun is a three man band from Doncaster, England (home to John Parr--the singer of "St. Elmo's Fire." No, really!) and they released their debut self-titled record in 2008 which featured the sonically astounding gem "Darkestar."

In December 2010 they released the All You've Found EP featuring the epic "Waiting There" which you should take a listen to below.

Last fall 93 Million Miles From The Sun dropped their second full length album Northern Sky, which yielded the blissfully fantastic song, "Take Me Away."

Vince Clarke and Martin Gore were interviewed by Vogue Italia about their new techno project VCMG. Gore said the project came about after receiving an email from Clarke who had asked whether he'd be up for a collaboration. Clarke also revealed to Vogue that the two mainly utilized the internet to complete work on the project:

"in reality we hardly ever saw each other in person; we exchanged ideas via email and created the album by sending files. It was an interesting way to collaborate, almost like two painters working on the same canvas but at a distance."

Noel Gallagher will release "Dream On" as the next single from his record Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. The single will feature the b-side "Shoot A Hole In The Sun," which is the first track to be released from the sessions Gallagher recorded with Amorphous Androgynous (aka Future Sound Of London.) Last summer when Gallagher announced details about his High Flying Birds project he also revealed he had recorded a full second solo record with Amorphous Androgynous which was more experimental ("it's f-ing far out man...it's the furthest out I've ever been man") than his High Flying Birds record, and this second record would likely be released by summer 2012.

Garbage will return with their new cd, Not Your Kind Of People, on May 15th. The record is the follow up to 2005's Bleed Like Me and will be released on the band's label STUNVOLUME. Earlier this month Garbage announced a handful of European shows and today they added a few more tour dates to their itinerary, however dates for North America are yet to be revealed. Tomorrow the band will be announcing an intimate Los Angeles date, so if you're near the L.A. area be sure to keep an ear out for official info. What an awesome day--Jack White and Third Man Records announced White's debut solo album, Blunderbuss, will drop on April 24th. Check out the first single, "Love Interruption" below:

There are so many awesome bands coming out of Oslo right now, I think I need to move there. Amish 82 is a supercool electropop band on the Riot Factory label (the same label as Oslo shoegazers Drape--who you can read about and listen to directly below this post).

If you like shoegaze music, you need to check out Drape. They're from Oslo and they are so good you might cry (but tears of joy, so don't worry). Mona have been announced as the opening act for Noel Gallagher's upcoming North American tour. The Nashville four piece played South By Southwest 2011, released the digital single, "Lean Into The Fall" last summer and followed that up with the U.K. release of their full length debut cd Mona. If you were out of the loop this week, you might not have heard that Disney was selling a t-shirt that ripped off Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures cover art. You totally remember the cover art:

At any rate, after Pitchfork broke the story, there was a massive outcry and not too long later, Disney pulled the shirt. (Here's the dead link to the original Disney page.) Let's be honest--it wasn't the outcry that scared Disney into pulling the shirt, it was more of the realization of their legal snafu. None of the remaining members of Joy Division nor any of their "people" copped to having given Disney the permission to do this. And you TOTALLY know if Disney HAD gotten the rights to do this, they'd be dropping names, showing off contracts, etc. So yeah, Disney pulled the shirts. Thanks, Pitchfork, this is the best thing you've ever done. No, really.

Of course, people are always looking for a way to cash in. Here's one of the shirts that just sold on ebay for $376.50. Of course now a few more shirts have cropped up like here and here and here. This particular listing is my favorite because:

"The shirt is very clean, it has only been worn three times, but I have never washed it, so the art has not faded."

OMG, EWWWWWWWW!

Anyway, what a travesty, although shockingly enough Peter Hook claimed to be pretty flattered by the entire design. He did however drop this quotable awesomeness:

"I hope that [Disney] will be as understanding when we start doing Donald Duck shirts.”

U2 has revealed the tracklisting for U22, the special live, limited edition double disc set that will be sold exclusively to subscribers of U2.com. All the songs from U22 were recorded on U2's 360 tour from 2009-2011, and fanclub members were given the opportunity to choose the tracklisting. Fans voted on their favorites, narrowing the pool of songs from 46 down to the final 22. Check out the tracklisting below and click here for info on how to become a fanclub member. U22 is in the mixing stages and fans will be given more info on the exact release date via an email from the band when the info is available.

According to a Depeche Mode fan-site, the latest issue of German 'zine Sonic Seducer features an interview with Martin L. Gore. In the interview Gore revealed the new Depeche Mode record will come "no later than early 2013." Here's a link to buy the issue of Sonic Seducer.

Martin Gore is also getting ready to release his collaboration with ex-Depeche Mode bandmate Vince Clarke.
