Blur has won the prestigious Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution To Music and will be presented with the statue at the awards ceremony in London on February 21st. The award wasn't given out last year for some reason, but the organizers decided to bring it back and hand it on over to Blur this year:

"Blur are a seminal British band who have long been worthy Outstanding Contribution winners," said BRITs Chairman David Joseph. "Their contribution to British music is immense. Blur are the perfect band to bring this award back for.

808 State's classic dance hit "Cubik" has been remixed for its 21st anniversary. Listen to the new fangled mix below:

808 State "Cubik" (21st Anniversary Remix)

No offense to the remix, but the new version pales in comparison to 1990's version from Utd. State 90

"Cubik" (from Utd. State 90)

Utd. State 90 is an amazing record. How can you go wrong with a record that starts off with this song:

"Pacific 202"

About a year after the release of Utd. State 90, 808 State dropped ex:el which featured a new version of "Cubik" plus guests on the record included Bernard Sumner and Bjork

"Cubik" (from 1991's ex:el)

"Spanish Heart" (featuring Bernard Sumner)

"Ooops" (featuring Bjork)

808 State went on to release another fabulous record titled Gorgeous in 1993, with guest vocals from Ian McCulloch, UB40, and a song that sampled Joy Division's "She's Lost Control."

Great news for Afghan Whigs fans--the band will reunite for a couple of festivals next year. According to Billboard, the band will be playing All Tomorrow's Parties in London next May, plus they'll also play the U.S. I'll Be Your Mirror show in Ashbury Park, New Jersey on September 22nd. Tickets go on sale in January.

Afghan Whigs' leader Greg Dulli has recently been busy with his other project The Twilight Singers. The band released the full length cd Dynamite Steps back in the winter. Dulli will also appear on the new Mark Lanegan record, Blues Funeral, which drops in February 2012.

Listen to some Afghan Whigs:

Afghan Whigs "Miles iz Dead" (hidden track on 1992's Congregation)

In 1993 Afghan Whigs added some disco beats to "Miles iz Dead," called the new version "Rebirth of the Cool" and released it on Uptown/Avondale.

Afghan Whigs "Rebirth of the Cool"

Wow, look at the price on the Uptown/Avondale cd! At least the iTunes version is reasonably priced.

Morrissey dusted off "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" at his show last night in Monterrey. The recording isn't the best, but you should watch anyway (despite the fan screams, holy crap) as this is the ONLY footage of him performing this song on the current tour:

Don't miss The Wedding Present at the Pike Room in Pontiac on March 26th and be sure to check out the other dates on their itinerary here.

The Wedding Present has also covered The Smiths' "Hand In Glove" for the forthcoming tribute Please Please Please: Tribute To The Smiths. Mark Lanegan will release a new cd titled Blues Funeral on February 6th. Guests on the record include Greg Dulli, Josh Homme, and Jack Irons. The first single, "The Gravedigger's Song" will be released as a 7 inch colored vinyl single backed with a new version of "Burning Jacob's Ladder" on January 2nd.

Listen to a stream plus download "The Gravedigger's Song" below:

Robert Smith wrote a post on the Cure's official website after finding a guitar he signed selling on Ebay for $1500. He seemed mostly annoyed about the crap quality of the guitar:

PLEASE!

$1,500 FOR A JUNK SHOP GUITAR ON EBAY JUST BECAUSE I SCRAWLED ON IT?

FFS!

PLEASE DONT BUY THIS JUNK!

IF YOU WANT A GUITAR - BUY AN ULTRACURE!

FOR WHAT ITS WORTH MY SIGNATURE IS ON THE TOP ALREADY…

(SO WHAT IF IT'S PRINTED ON? SO WHAT?!!)
Smith goes on to suggest if you want a guitar he signed to go ahead and buy this one instead because it's a better guitar, plus proceeds go to Amnesty International.
Read Smith's entire post here. Bestival Live 2011 from the Cure drops tomorrow.

You never know what you might find on YouTube:

Check out audio of Ian McCulloch singing "Ceremony" with New Order at a 1986 gig in Manchester. Even though McCulloch messed up a few of the lyrics, it's pretty fantabulous* to say the least. It's essentially Joy Division, with Ian McCulloch on vocals instead of Ian Curtis.

I also stumbled upon McCulloch's cover of "Ring Of Fire" from 2006. McCulloch is a huge fan of Liverpool's football team and he got together with the Bootroom Allstars to record the Johnny Cash classic as an "anthem" for the team. And legend has it, Liverpool won the cup that year. Was it McCulloch's cover that did the trick??? OMG!

You want more covers? McCulloch recorded a couple of Leonard Cohen covers back in the early 90's. We played both of the following covers on 89X all the time when they were released:

"Lover Lover Lover" (from 1992's Mysterio)

"Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" (1991's I'm Your Fan)

These days, Mcculloch is busy working on a new solo cd in London. He's expected to release it in the first half of 2012.

*it's my blog. I get to make up words if I want to.
Ian Brown and John Squire from the Stone Roses played together for the first time in years at the Mick Jones Justice Tonight charity gig in Manchester Thursday night. Brown and Squire were joined by Mick Jones and Pete Wylie for "Elizabeth My Dear," "Bankrobber," and "Armagideon Time." Watch video of the performance below (via Spinner).

The Cure will release a live double album, Bestival Live 2011, on Tuesday. The concert was recorded this September at Bestival, Isle Of Wight's annual festival and if you like live music from the Cure, you'll find this is a great live collection featuring most of the band's greatest hits. Pretty much all of the songs from the concert have been uploaded onto YouTube (a portion of the concert was televised overseas), so you really do get a chance to preview the live album before deciding whether or not to purchase the album. I posted a few songs below as well as the track listing for the release.

Much to the dismay of fans in Oakland, California, Morrissey canceled his show there this past Thursday due to an eye injury sustained by one of the members in his band. Maybe it was a lost contact lens or something, because the injury won't impact any of the other dates on the tour.

Regardless, the news is a major disappointment to fans in Oakland because Moz canceled a show there in 2009 (and was later spotted at a BAR the evening of the cancellation according to reports) so tempers flared big time. Some fans in the area were so incensed by Morrissey's latest cancellation that local radio station Live 105 aired some prank promos on the station featuring a Morrissey impersonator. To give you an idea of what aired:

"Hello, Bay Area. This is Morrissey. Regrettably, I need to cancel my show tonight because, well, quite frankly, I’m old, I’m losing my hair, I haven’t eaten meat or gotten laid in decades.”

Yikes.

Onto my next record in the 'Best Of 2011' series: Surprise, it's a Radiohead release!

Back in February Radiohead released a new song and video, "Lotus Flower," and we all had a good chuckle at Thom Yorke's dancing skills.

Days later Radiohead released The King Of Limbs digitally. The incredibly short record clocked in at 37 minutes, leaving some fans to speculate there was another new release on the way in May. May's release turned out to be the newspaper edition of the record, and while it definitely was packaged beautifully, there wasn't any new material.

Overall it seemed fans were disappointed because The King Of Limbs is an electronic-ish Radiohead record--those who have been waiting for The Bends Part 2 were yet again let down and left to sulk. Sorry.

Sure, it's not the Bends Part 2. It's not the best Radiohead record ever made either. But The King Of Limbs landed on my best of list, if for no other reason than for their amazingly beautiful song "Codex" which is now one of my all time favorite Radiohead songs:

"Codex"

By the way, if you missed it, Deadmau5 covered the song recently.

Listen to the rest of The King Of Limbs here. If you like the record, keep in mind Radiohead also released a double disc remix record for The King Of Limbs. You can still listen to the remixes and purchase the cd here.

Fugazi's online archive, Fugazi Live Series, is now up and running! The band has uploaded tons of shows for your downloading pleasure. Fugazi's 1993 show at the Phoenix Plaza Amphitheater in Pontiac is one of the shows that's available for download. The band is suggesting 5 dollars per concert download, however you can also name your own price for any of the shows available. Check it out the entire online archive here and keep checking back--more and more shows will be added to the archive.

Yep, it's December 1st. Probably my favorite December song is by Teenage Fanclub and is on the band's superb 1991 release Bandwagonesque.
