Afghan Whigs vinyl reissues coming in September

Afghan Whigs announced their first three releases on Sub Pop -- Up In It, Congregation, and Uptown Avondale EP -- will be released on vinyl in September. This is incredible news for Whigs' fans, as the two full players have been out of print for several years, and Uptown Avondale was never issued on vinyl in North America.

All three records will be pressed on 180 gm black vinyl (Congregation on double LP with gatefold packaging), plus special edition Sub Pop Loser editions will also be available: Up In It on transparent blue vinyl with white swirl; Congregation on transparent red vinyl with white swirl; and Uptown Avondale on silver metallic vinyl.

The releases will be available through Sub Pop starting September 8th and in retail stores on September 22nd. Limited copies will be available at the merch booth on the Afghan Whigs' upcoming North American tour.

Swervedriver launch campaign for sixth studio LP

Recording of New Order's legendary 1983 show emerges

A rare New Order recording from 1983 has seen light of day. The June 30th, 1983 gig at Cabaret Metro (now The Metro) in Chicago is one of two New Order shows widely considered to be the "holy grail" of lost New Order recordings (the other being New Order's first live gig July 30th, 1980 at The Beach Club in Manchester). No recording of the Chicago show was thought to exist for years, however one has emerged 34 years later.

The show took place on one of the hottest days ever recorded in Chicago -- 118 degrees Fahrenheit -- and the heat took a toll on the band and caused some technical drama, as Peter Hook detailed in his latest book Substance: Inside New Order:

"One of the hottest gigs I have ever done. It was so hot the fold-back engineer went out and bought a thermometer to measure it - 118 degrees Fahrenheit! The thermal cutouts on my Amcron DC330A's amplifiers (set at 120 degrees) kept shutting down and turning themselves off and on...the owner Joe Shanahan promised us he would fit air conditioning in for the next time we played and he did."

Despite all the issues that evening, the band performed at least 10 songs in the intense heat. Rumors swirled over the years regarding the setlist -- some fans claimed Joy Division songs were played; another prevailing rumor was that an acoustic version of "Blue Monday" was performed. However unless this material was edited out of this recording for some reason, it appears that these have proven to be unfounded rumors.

As for the particulars of how the recording emerged: A few months ago an individual contacted Analog Loyalist -- the audio genius who has previously shared remasters of vintage live material from Joy Division, New Order, and more. After communicating electronically with the anonymous source, AI met up with the individual who possessed the recording and was given a first generation copy. AI then refined the audio somewhat and posted it up on his website, Dime, and We Transfer.

cEvin Key unearths rare Skinny Puppy studio footage

cEvin Key unearthed rare footage of Skinny Puppy in the studio creating the final mix of "Hexonxonx" at Vancouver Studios. The amazing 1989 video is a rare glimpse into the production wizardry of Key, Dave Rave Ogilvie, and Alien Jourgensen; Jello Biafra, who named the track and assistant Marc Ramaer can also be seen in the video. Check it out here.

"Hexonxonx" was released on Skinny Puppy's 1989 album Rabies. Besides helping out with production, Jourgensen is featured on the album (guitar and vocals).



Meanwhile, Key's project The Tear Garden which also features Edward Ka-Spel of Legendary Pink Dots released a trippy brand new album titled The Brown Acid Caveat plus a new career-spanning compilation Eye Spy Vol. 2, which collects unreleased tracks, demos, rewritten and original material. Both releases are available from Metropolis Records.

The Smiths share previously unreleased "Frankly Mr. Shankly"

It's Monday, which means The Smiths have unleashed a previously unreleased live song from their vaults in celebration of their forthcoming The Queen Is Dead expanded reissues. This week they shared a recording of "Frankly, Mr. Shankly," which was captured live at the Performing Arts Center, in Milwaukee on August 16th 1986. Like last week's rarity, the recording will not be included on the expanded editions of The Queen Is Dead.

Nick McCabe and Pete Salisbury of The Verve reunited and performed together for the first time in 10 years last Sunday at the Kendal Calling festival. The reunited members, joined by Martin Blunt (of Charlatans) and vocalist Denise Johnson, ripped through a four song set. Morrissey strikes again: 1981 Depeche Mode edition

The young Steven Patrick Morrissey fired off a review of Depeche Mode's August 5th, 1981 show at Rafters in Manchester. His scathing take was later published in the British weekly 'zine Record Mirror. It's not quite as legendary as his shot at the Ramones, but it's a fun Mozzer read nonetheless.

"Depeche Mode may not be the most remarkably boring group ever to walk the face of the earth, but they're certainly in the running. Their sophisticated nonsense succeeds only in emphasising just how hilariously unimaginative they really are.

At once we recognise four coiffured Barry White's (a nauseating version); "cain't git enough of your lerve" they profess too dull to be even boring. They ressurect every murderously monotous cliche known to modern man, and "New Life" looms a nothing more than a bland jelly-baby. Still, the man from "Jackie" was impressed knowing that, at least, these boys have nice hair. And the converyor belt moves along.

Ludus, plainly wishing they were elsewhere, hammered out a passionate set to an audience possibly hand-picked for their tone deafness. But Ludus like to wallow in other people's depravities and therefore their music offers everything to everyone. Linder was born singing and has more imagination than Depeche Mode could ever hope for. Still, Depeche Mode get the Jackie spread.

Gary Numan unveils "What God Intended"

Gary Numan is poised to return with his new studio album Savage: Songs From A Broken World on September 15th. He's previously released the single and video for the lead track "My Name Is Ruin," and now he's unveiled a brand new song titled "What God Intended." Numan previously revealed the 10 track studio album was produced by Ade Fenton and has an apocalyptic theme:

"Savage: Songs Of A Broken World is set in an apocalyptic, post-global warming Earth in the not-too-distant future. There is no technology left and most of the planet has turned to a desolate desert wasteland. Food is scarce, water even more so, and human kindness and decency are just a dim and distant memory. Western and Eastern cultures have merged, more because of the need to simply survive than any feelings of greater tolerance or understanding. It’s a harsh, savage environment, as are the survivors who still roam across it.

"The songs are about the things people do in such a harsh and terrifying environment. It's about a desperate need to survive and do they do awful things in order to do so, and some are haunted by what they've done. That desire to be forgiven, along with some discovered remnants of an old religious book, ultimately encourages religion to resurface, and it really goes downhill from there."

Liam Gallagher bails on Lollapalooza set

Liam Gallagher bailed on his supposed hourlong Lollapalooza set after only 4 songs. Some in attendance suggested that a fan's "I Love Noel" sign upset the legend enough to make him leave, but  Liam himself later offered up his own explanation on Twitter: he wrecked his voice last night at his headline show at Park West.

Liam's early departure shouldn't be all that surprising to long time Oasis fans, but still.

Trashcan Sinatras announce 30th anniversary acoustic tour

Last year Trashcan Sinatras released their excellent 6th studio album Wild Pendulum, then toured the U.S. in support of the record. Today they announced that in celebration of their 30th anniversary they'll head out on the road as a three piece for a career-spanning acoustic tour.

On each stop of the All Night With The Trashcan Sinatras tour (excluding the NYC date), Frank Reader, Paul Livingston, and John Douglas will perform two unique sets featuring beloved/well-known songs as well as covers, obscurities, songs they've never performed live, and songs they'll likely never again play live. Over the course of the tour every song they've released and recorded will be performed (the set list will vary from show to show -- they will not be playing 100 songs each night!)

Liam Gallagher live session/"Wonderwall"

Liam Gallagher appeared on SiriusXM July 31st to perform his new single "Wall Of Glass" along with the Oasis classic "Wonderwall." Before singing "Wonderwall" he got a dig into his brother, comparing Noel's version of the beloved song to Dolly Parton. The Smiths launch 'The Queen Is Dead' tribute + premiere previously unreleased live recordings

The Smiths have launched a website celebrating the forthcoming The Queen Is Dead expanded reissues. The Smiths will be using the site to unveil a previously unreleased live song every Monday leading up to the October 20th release of the reissues. The site also includes a tribute page for each song on the seminal album and fans are encouraged to participate in sharing their memories of each song using #TQID on social media.

The first live recording in the series has premiered which is a recording of "The Queen Is Dead" captured live at Irvine Meadows, Laguna Hills on 28th August, 1986. Stream the track below and view the tribute page for the legendary title track here.

Richard Ashcroft talks 'Urban Hymns' + Nick McCabe & Pete Salisbury reunite

The Verve's Urban Hymns turns 20 years old next month and will be reissued as an expanded set on September 1st. In celebration of the anniversary, yesterday BBC Music 6 pulled out an archive of a feature that was recorded in 2012 for Urban Hymns' 15th anniversary. The feature included an interview with leader Richard Ashcroft, who revealed some previously unknown details about the record -- the "sha-la-la" backing vocals on "The Drugs Don't Work" are a nod to the Carpenters, who he loves, and he confirmed that Liam Gallagher is indeed the one who provided the screaming on epic album closer "Come On."

Ashcroft explained how the collaboration with Liam came about:

"If you concentrate you can hear some demented guy screaming "COME ON" and I imagine everyone thinks that's me, but I remember him doing it. He arrived at the studio in Barnes with a tape of a song he'd just done with John Squire. So he proceeded, as he does, and played it 15 times in a row in the studio, so I played him "Bittersweet" and I said we're doing "Come On" now -- you've got to be on it. He went into this booth with someone else and he was going ballistic at the end of it, smashing his tambourine against the side of the vocal booth."



"Come On" wasn't Gallagher's first collaboration (so to speak) with Verve -- he famously appears on "History" as well as "Space And Time."

Meanwhile as previously reported Verve guitarist Nick McCabe and drummer Pete Salisbury reunited and performed for the first time in 10 years last weekend at Kendal Calling. The pair were joined by Martin Blunt (of The Charlatans) and amazing vocalist Denise Johnson who has appeared on classic songs with Primal Scream, Electronic, A Certain Ratio, and more.
