Joy Division covers

Yesterday when I was digging around for Halloween songs I ran into The Cure's version of the Joy Division classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart." It's kind of hard to cover Joy Division, but really, how can you go wrong with The Cure?

The Cure "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

I always found The Swans' cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" to be a stellar version too. I bought the Love Will Tear Us Apart ep by the Swans when it came out in 1988 and I really love this version. I think it has something to do with Michael Gira's deep vocals.

The Swans "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

Honestly, in my opinion you need some kind of special cred to get away with covering Joy Division. Sadly, Fall Out Boy decided to record their own cover and while FOB might be competent at what THEY do, their cover was so wrong for so many reasons. Brace yourself:

Fall Out Boy "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

Halloween Pt II

Back with more Halloweenish songs and this time they were submitted by Kevin! Thanks Kevin!

Oh, and by the way it's Johnny Marr's birthday today!  Let's hope it's not unhappy...

U2--Achtung Baby

U2's 1991 classic Achtung Baby will be reissued in a variety of formats starting Monday in celebration of the cd's 20th anniversary. The Super Deluxe and Uber Deluxe versions will feature the Achtung Baby documentary, From The Sky Down. Watch the trailer for the film below and read an interview with the film's director Davis Guggenheim here.

If you're a fan of bands on Creation Records (My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, Oasis, etc) you are going to literally cream yourself when you check out this website. It's the official audio archives website for Creation Records. Tons. Of. Archives. F'ing amazing. Enjoy.

By the way, the film Upside Down: The Creation Records Story was released earlier this year in the U.K. and it aired on the BBC on Friday. The documentary will eventually be released in North America (Rocket Releasing is the distributor of the film in the U.S.) but a release date is still TBA. In the meantime you can scour the net for a pirate version...

Noel Gallagher daily news...

Noel Gallagher has revealed to Fantastic Man Magazine that he owes Johnny Marr "a fortune" after staying at Marr's home rent free for two years. Read the sordid details here.

Vicious Pink--Fetish

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and many organizations have designated today as a day that people are encouraged to show their support by wearing pink. While I wholeheartedly support the cause, I'm not wearing pink. Instead, I'll post a link where you can donate to a worthwhile charity ( Susan G. Komen) which would be more helpful than what you wear today. Plus we'll dust off something pink to enjoy:

Garbage

Shirley Manson from Garbage revealed today on Twitter that she just completed vocals on the title track for the band's new cd. The new record from Garbage is due out in the spring, but over the past couple of months they've been posting short (very short) videos with song samples. Check out the latest one below:

If you missed this earlier in the week, check out a "progress report" from Garbage here.

R.E.M. films

R.E.M. has posted two new films directed by Michael Stipe for the new single "We All Go Back To Where We Belong."  Watch the films here.  R.E.M.'s double disc 40 song collection Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011 will be released on November 15th.

Liam Gallagher film

Liam Gallagher has reportedly been cast in an upcoming film about The Beatles titled The Longest Cocktail Party. The project is an adaptation of the Robert DiLello book and it will be directed by Michael Winterbottom (who directed the Manchester/Factory Records epic 24 Hour Party People). Winterbottom has reportedly revealed to The Daily Mail that Gallagher will indeed have some sort of role in the project. Read more on the film here.

Noel Gallagher dusts off Don't Look Back In Anger live in Manchester

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' tour kicked off this week and last night they played their debut show in Manchester. Noel dusted off the Oasis classic "Don't Look Back In Anger" and dedicated it to The Stone Roses. Watch the INCREDIBLE AWESOMENESS BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MTV's 120 Minutes episode 4

MTV2 premiered the latest episode of 120 Minutes Wednesday morning at 3am. Why MTV2 can't bother airing it during reasonable viewing hours is beyond me. There isn't even another scheduled airing for the episode on television. Well, at least you can watch the episode in its entirety on demand here. Episode 4 features Death Cab For Cutie, City & Colour, Bush/Gavin Rossdale, Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr, Kasabian, The Big Pink, Mates Of State and more.

Stone Roses reunited and on film...

By now if you follow music you are likely aware the Stone Roses have reunited. The band will kick off their reunion next summer by playing three sold out shows in their hometown of Manchester, and from there they'll embark on a world tour. Dates for the world tour have not been officially announced yet, so don't be fooled by the fake itinerary which leaked a couple of days ago.

The hotly anticipated reunion will indeed be documented on film. The band has allegedly enlisted British filmmaker Shane Meadows to record their every move (ok, maybe not every move) while getting ready for the momentous tour.

Can this guy reunite the Smiths???

U.K. football star Joey Barton is claiming he's going to make a Smiths' reunion a reality. Apparently Barton was at the Q Awards on Monday and he told the crowd onstage:

"If I could get The Smiths back together that would top anything I could achieve on the football pitch."

You're probably saying, yeah riiiiiiiight, like this guy is gonna make the impossible somehow possible. Fear not, I doubt it too, but keep in mind Barton is friends with both Johnny Marr and Morrissey (in fact he's having dinner with Moz later this week according to The Sun).

I never believed a Stone Roses full reunion would ever be a reality, so I guess anything could happen.

Liam Gallagher talks Oasis reunion

Liam Gallagher was interviewed on the CBC show Strombo last night. Liam made the following comments about an Oasis reunion:

"I'm definitely open, well, Noel is the one that started this kind of thing, but I'm definitely up for doing a tour...I don't feel there's going to be a full band again, you know what I mean? That's done I think, but Noel was mentioning like a tour for the 2015 What's The Story, Morning Glory, and I think by then, three years, I think I'll grown up a bit by then and so will he. If not, I think we can do that and go back to our Beady Eye, The High Flying Birds, or whatever it is, but if the people want it we won't stand in the way. If they don't want it, they don't."

Watch the clip of Liam's comments and there's also video of he and wife Nicole discussing the music they listen to at home. Really, Loverboy and Kiss???

The Damned

The Damned are currently on the road celebrating their 35th anniversary and even though the tour won't be visiting Detroit, you'll be able to get a glimpse into the band's live show soon. Filmmaker Wes Orshoski (Lemmy) has been hired by the Damned to document all the craziness and a feature length documentary will be released sometime next year. The film will feature footage of the Damned (both on and off the road) as well as interviews with band members.

Captain Sensible had this to say about why the film is going to happen:

It seems like every other scumbag who was ever in a punk band got a film made about them, now it’s our turn, and at least we have some real stories to tell. Hopefully, this will cause a bit of a stink, but that’s what it was always supposed to do.

Read more about the upcoming documentary on The Damned here.

This calls for a celebratory viewing of "Grimly Fiendish" don't you think?

Joy Division remix

You might already be familiar with Australian DJ Young Edits (aka Luke Foskey) from his Moving Me Up ep released earlier this year. If you're not familiar, the highlight of the ep was a remix of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting." Young Edits has returned this week with another classic alternative remix: this time it's Joy Division's "She's Lost Control." Listen below:

Oasis

Perhaps the Stone Roses have inspired Liam Gallagher, because Rolling Stone is reporting that Liam now says he's open to an Oasis reunion for the 20th anniversary of What's The Story Morning Glory (which would be 2015). I didn't believe for a moment that the Stone Roses would reunite, but I don't have any doubts that an Oasis reunion will happen. I'll actually be surprised if it takes 4 years.

Sounds like the Gallagher brothers are mellowing. Just today Shortlist published an interview with Noel Gallagher who mentioned he recently threw down a few pints with Damon Albarn. Well, that's certainly some good news. It seems like just yesterday when Noel made his infamous statement about wishing Albarn and bandmate Alex James would "catch AIDS and die", doesn't it? Incidentally, the only good thing that came out of Noel's incredibly distasteful statement was the song "My Big Mouth" which Noel wrote as an apology of sorts.

Oasis "My Big Mouth"

Stone Roses

Tickets to see the Stone Roses at Heaton Park in Manchester, England June 29th & 30th go on sale tomorrow at 9:30am BST. Visit the band's official website for links to purchase tickets.

Garbage

The internet never disappoints. U2's cover album will come along with copies of next week's issue of Q in the U.K, (but not in North America) but now, some nice person with a soul has posted Garbage's cover of U2's "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" for the rest of the world and you can listen to it below.

Stone Roses reunion

Well, now the British paper The Sun is reporting that Ian Brown has confirmed the Roses' reunion. Brown's BFF Dynamo (a magician!) allegedly showed the Sun a text message from Brown stating the reunion was happening. Allegedly. Read the entire story here. What would be awesome is if all of this turns out to not be true.

Stone Roses

Well, on Friday the rumors started again: will the Stone Roses reunite? At first, when I heard the rumor again I rolled my eyes, because really, are we going to go through this again? It seems like every few months this rumor seems to persist. Back in 2009 everyone was SO SURE there would be a reunion for the 20th anniversary of the band's classic cd The Stone Roses. Well, there was no reunion and guitarist John Squire even created a sculpture to air his view on getting the band back together.

Anyway, back in the spring rumors swirled again after singer Ian Brown and John Squire had allegedly buried the hatchet and started speaking after seeing each other at the funeral for Mani's mother. Again, lots of hot air blew, but no reunion.

But now NME has revealed that a noted publicity firm in the U.K. will be holding a press conference in London on Tuesday to make "a very important announcement" and the announcement will be about a band/concert/tour. People in the know think it's about the Stone Roses and a couple of people that know the band have made some comments on Twitter lending more credence to the rumors.

Will it happen? I guess we'll find out on Tuesday. The rumor in 2009 was that everyone in the band other than Ian Brown wanted to reunite, especially considering the amount of money that was on the table. Interestingly enough Brown was recently divorced, so perhaps he needs the cash? The money on the table for this reunion would be huge, huge, huge. We'll see if it happens. Stay tuned.

Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore: Splitsville

Wow, I'm still in shock as I type this. Spin is reporting that Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth have separated after 27 years of marriage. The news has been confirmed by Matador Records, so this isn't some ridiculous rumor. Gordon and Moore were married in 1984 and have a 17 year old daughter, Coco. Read Spin's report on the split here.

Skinny Puppy

Skinny Puppy are releasing a new cd titled hanDover on October 25th. Revolver Magazine has the exclusive stream of the first single, "Village" so click on over and take a listen. I'm loving the new song--it's kind of old school sounding, but at the same time it sounds new. You'll get what I'm talking about once you hear the song. Regardless, I'm definitely amped up to hear the full length cd. You can also click over here to download a 10 minute mp3 interview with Ogre discussing the new cd and more.

Noel Gallagher

Noel Gallagher is holding a listening party on his official website which started today at noon. The first side of the album will stream via Noel Gallagher's official site until tomorrow at noon, then the second half of the cd will stream tomorrow at noon for another 24 hours.

Or...you could just listen to the full cd stream now, right here on Soundcloud.

Jack White

Jack White has redeemed himself. Back when news broke about White's collaboration with those fools in ICP, I was dumbfounded. I thought perhaps White had entered into some oddball Howard Hughes descent or something, but it now appears the ICP collaboration was a momentary lapse of reason. I've wholeheartedly forgiven Jack because he's recorded a sublime cover of U2's "Love Is Blindness" which you can listen to below (via Spin, via the BBC, etc):

The emotionally draining (in a very, very good way) cover will surface on Q's Achtung Baby tribute cd, AHK-toong Baybi Covered (really, that's the name of the cd) which will come along with the October 25th issue of the magazine in the U.K.

Jane's Addiction

The new cd from Jane's Addiction is streaming on iTunes. The Great Escape Artist drops next Tuesday, but click here to listen to it in its entirety, and while you're hanging out on iTunes why not pre-order the album?

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

Noel Gallagher will be previewing his solo record starting tomorrow on his official website. The first side of the album will stream for 24 hours starting at 12pm ET tomorrow, then Thursday at noon the second side will stream for 24 hours. To access the stream you have to register with Noel's site (the link to listen to the stream will appear in the inbox at the top right corner of the site tomorrow). Here's a link with all the details on the listening party, and if you need to register you can do that right here.

The debut cd from Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds drops Monday in the U.K. and November 8th in the U.S.

Liam Gallagher

Oh no, Beady Eye fans: Liam Gallagher just sent out this tweet:

Zurich, apologies for cancelling tonight's gig, I've got a throat infection, absolutely gutted, hope to see you all again soon...LG

ZOMG! Inquiring minds WANT TO KNOW: Does this mean Beady Eye are breaking up? Will Andy, Gem, and Chris allege Liam had a hangover? Who'll be the first to get sued? Will the Sun snap a photo of Liam boozing it up tonight??? Does Liam really have throaty issues, or does he
just want a good night's sleep so he can get up and listen to Noel's listening party tomorrow???

*um, yeah, I'm kidding. Chillax.

Noel Gallagher strikes again

In the latest Noel Gallagher vignette, Noel talks about using wine glasses, a double bass, and a saw on the new record. Honestly, he should record one of these audio clips each day. Hell, I'd pay good money to subscribe to a daily commentary from Noel.

U2 Achtung Baby tribute

U2's Achtung Baby is celebrating its 20th anniversary and a few months ago word leaked that a U2 covers/tribute record from Q was in the works. Today Q has revealed the album will be given away with copies of the October 25th issue of the magazine which U.K. readers can pre-order starting today. Everyone else will have to wait until it pops up on the interwebs (copies of the mag in North America will NOT come bundled with this disc. Sorry, them's the breaks.) At any rate, take a look below at the impressive tracklisting:

Nine Inch Nails "Zoo Station"
U2 (remix) "Even Better Than The Real Thing"
Damien Rice "One"
Patti Smith "Until The End Of The World"
Garbage "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"

Fix--The Ministry Movie

The documentary on Ministry--Fix-The Ministry Movie--is currently being screened in select cities around the country (not Detroit, at least not yet). Earlier this year the documentary, which chronicles the band's 1996 Sphinctour excursion, was held up in part because Al Jourgensen was suing the directors/producers of the film. As it turned out, Jourgensen had a change of heart and dropped the suit this summer (some say due to a health issue he was dealing with) allowing the documentary to see light of day. Soon there should be a DVD release to report on, but for now you can read an interview with director Doug Freel here and you can read his tour diary (including an entry from the Detroit show on April 10th, 1996) here. Two trailers for Fix-The Ministry Movie can be viewed below:

And an early Happy Birthday to Al Jourgensen! His birthday is tomorrow.

Jane's Addiction

Jane's Addiction are gearing up to release the brand new cd, The Great Escape Artist, on October 18th. If this stellar review of the cd is any indication, it appears that Jane's Addiction fans should be prepared to be blown away by the new album. Awesome.

While you're waiting for the cd to drop, why not watch the video for the band's latest single, "Irresistible Force" below:

New Order/Peter Hook drama

Spinner's interview with Peter Hook made headlines this week mainly because he made a couple (ok, more than a couple) of derogatory comments about his old band mates in New Order. But beyond Hooky's snarky comments about New Order, it's a pretty interesting read. He talks about the various incarnations of New Order, explains why he's on the road playing Joy Division songs, and even admits that if New Order were to contact him and admit they should have included him in the reunion he would be 100% on board. Read the entire interview here.

Noel Gallagher

Check out the 8 minute video for "AKA...What A Life" by Noel Gallagher below. The video picks up where "The Death Of You & Me" leaves off, and it even "stars" Russell Brand (not necessarily a selling point). The debut cd from Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will drop October 17th in the U.K., and November 8th in North America.

Edit: I figured the video would get pulled down, and sure enough, it did. Hopefully the video will surface again on YouTube. Sadly it premiered officialy only in the U.K. so we'll have to wait for someone else over there to upload it surreptitiously at some point.

Noel Gallagher

Noel Gallagher isn't just a talented musician, he's also ridiculously entertaining. Check out the video below (originally posted on Noel's official YouTube channel) of Noel commenting on digital music. If nothing else, be sure to listen to the last minute of the clip, because that's when Noel kind of starts ranting and that's never a boring thing.

Oh, also, he drops a lot of f-bombs, so don't bother clicking play if you find that sort of thing offensive.

Portishead

Portishead is kicking off a month long North American tour tonight in New Jersey as they headline I'll Be Your Mirror (part of All Tomorrow's Parties festival). Portishead co-curated I'll Be Your Mirror, and a few months ago they even put together a free 2.5 hour mixtape featuring some of the bands playing (which you can still download for free here or just listen to it below.)

Portishead's tour will stop through New York later in the week then they'll be routed through Canada and so on. Of course they won't be stopping by Detroit, so be sure to catch 'em on Fallon this Wednesday night.
