Ian Curtis, R.I.P.

On this day in 1980, Ian Curtis hanged himself at the age of 23.

If you haven't seen the Anton Corbijn biopic Control (which was based on Deborah Curtis' book, Touching From A Distance), today might be a good day to view the film.

Official trailer

Q & A with director Anton Corbijn (starts around 1:30)

Control has been uploaded to YouTube.  Part 1 starts here.

I'd also recommend viewing Joy Division: Interviews, featuring interviews with ex-Joy Division members and key players like Tony Wilson, Peter Saville, Anton Corbijn, Annik Honore, and others close to Curtis and the Joy Division family.

Video #1: Joy Division/New Order drummer Stephen Morris explains why the band didn't do interviews, and how they repositioned themselves into New Order after the death of Ian Curtis.

Video #2: Ex-manager Terry Mason talks about being asked about Ian Curtis' death and discusses early Joy Division shows.

Video #3: Bernard Sumner talks about synthesizers and how Ian Curtis introduced him to the music of Kraftwerk. Anton Corbijn reveals Unknown Pleasures inspired him to leave Holland.

Video #4: Bernard Sumner discusses some of his experience with auditioning drummers, and Tony Wilson talks about the Hacienda.

Video #5: Bernard Sumner discusses the meaning of "The Eternal," plus some Joy Division touring stories

Video #6: Peter Saville on Joy Division imagery, the design of Joy Division's cover art, plus the addition of Gillian Gilbert after the death of Ian Curtis

Video #7: Peter Hook talks about Ian Curtis' epilepsy and how the band members never questioned the idea of continuing after Curtis' death.

Video #8: A discussion of punk music and scene.

Finally, take a listen to both Joy Division Peel Sessions.  Both sessions were recorded in 1979

Peel Session #1 recorded January 1979

Peel Session #2 recorded November, 1979

FYI, the Joy Divison Peel Sessions were released as separate eps, then later were compiled on one disc.
