Peter Hook returns to North America + reveals no "happy ending" for Martin Hannett tapes

Peter Hook kicks off his North American tour tomorrow in Boston and ahead of the tour Billboard/The Hollywood Reporter published an interview with the legendary bass player. During the interview Hooky dropped a piece of sad news:  apparently negotiations to obtain the lost Joy Division/New Order Martin Hannett tapes from Julia Adamson (the person who "rescued" the masters) didn't go so well. Hooky told the magazine he offered Adamson a "substantial reward" but she decided the amount wasn't enough:

“It was like someone finding a Pharoah’s tomb,” Hook says. “This cache of Joy Division tapes had been unearthed by this wonderful knight in shining armor. Unfortunately, she’s now holding them ransom.”

Hook also revealed that he's about halfway done with his New Order memoir, and unlike his Joy Division book, this one was somewhat harder mentally for him to write:

"There was a wonkiness about New Order that got worse and worse and worse up until the split. There were a lot of financial problems we had to go through with Factory and The Hacienda. And there were a lot of power struggles within New Order that weren’t very pleasant and aren’t very pleasant to remember."

Meanwhile, fans of Movement and Power, Corruption and Lies should read Hooky's interview with Vanyaland as most of the interview is about the first two New Order albums (which he'll be performing in full during the North American tour).  Hooky discussed Martin Hannett's production on Movement, said he considers Movement to be a Joy Division record with New Order vocals, and reveals his favorite song to play live is "Leave Me Alone" from Power, Corruption and Lies.  Read the full interview here.
