Update: the show/webcast is over.

The Cure are performing at Spain's BBK festival (watch the webstream here.)  The show got off to an interesting start - the band had technical difficulties, forcing the delay of the show.  After tinkering around with the equipment for a LONG time, Robert Smith came on stage and apologized (in Spanish!) for the delay and explained the show would start soon.  A little later, Smith came back with an acoustic guitar and played a three song impromptu set: "Three Imaginary Boys," "Fire In Cairo," and "Boys Don't Cry." After the final song he informed the crowd he had to go get the rest of the group because, "...that's why it's the Cure, not Robert Smith."  Awesome.

Watch Smith's fantastic three song acoustic set below

Update: the entire webcast is now available to view below.  Many thanks to You Tube uploader Halo Cure, who was apparently rolling tape the whole time.  The first part of the webcast begins with Smith's apology to the crowd, then the acoustic performance starts.  About an hour of the band's set was webcast, so enjoy it below! FYI, the Cure's plugged in set begins ~ 14 minutes in

Part 2 of webcast

Again, many, many thanks to YouTube uploader Halo Cure.

Radiohead returned to the road this week with a two night stand in Nimes, France. The July 10th show was the first Radiohead show since the tragic stage collapse in Toronto, which killed their drum tech Scott Johnson. As an apparent tribute to Johnson and the tragedy, they kicked off the show with the song "Lucky."

Watch video from the July 10 & July 11 shows, including the live debut of "Treefingers" below:

Over the years, music photographer Kevin Cummins has shot tons of bands such as David Bowie, U2, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, and many of the Madchester bands.  Cummins has had much of his work on display recently - the exhibit Manchester: So Much To Answer For features his work with the Smiths, and some of his New Order photos are currently on display in Berlin.  Yet another exhibit, The Stone Roses: The Third Coming, recently opened in London and will run through August 12th.  In conjunction with the exhibit opening, speaker manufacturer Sonos designed special edition speakers inspired by one of the Stone Roses' famous photos - the paint splatter shot.

Cummins discussed the iconic 1988 paint splatter shot with music journalist Lois Wilson at the exhibit opening in London.  In the interview Cummins revealed he was determined to get a band defining shot of the Roses and decided to take some pictures inspired by some of guitarist John Squire's paintings.  At the shoot, Squire was instructed to paint the band, but instead he took a gallon of paint, hurled it at remaining members of the band, and the rest was history.

Watch the interview with Cummins detailing the legendary photo shoot, plus check out the special design Play: 3 Sonos speakers below.  Sadly, the special design Play:3 speakers are not for sale (only 20 were made total) but you can visit Sonos online to check out some other great (unsplattered) speakers.

More info on The Stone Roses: The Third Coming is available here.

More Peter Gabriel goodness is coming later this year, as he's set to re-issue his 1986 album So again (the album was previously reissued in 2010.)  The new version of the reissue will be available as a standard cd, special edition 3 cd set, and super deluxe box set on September 18th.  The re-release coincides with Gabriel's North American Back To Front tour, which sees him playing So in its entirety along with a selection of greatest hits.  The tour itinerary (which includes a Detroit area stop September 26th) is posted here.

Simple Minds played T in the Park over the weekend and some pro-shot footage from the festival telecast is posted below.  Simple Minds' fans will want to click over to read The Dumbing Of America's 2011 interview with leader Jim Kerr.  In the interview Kerr discussed "Don't You Forget About Me," and how the song ended up on The Breakfast Club soundtrack.  Kerr also talked about Live Aid, Steve Lillywhite, making music videos, and much more.  A good read.  Check it out here.

Part of last week's music news cycle featured various reports on Peter Hook's upcoming memoir on his days in Joy Division, even though news of the book surfaced earlier this year.  Of course, XFM couldn't resist the opportunity to stir the pot catch up with Hook's ex-Joy Division/New Order bandmate Bernard Sumner to get his thoughts on the memoir. As you might expect, Sumner threw down a spark or two of snark:

“I’ve got to be very careful about my answer, it’s important...He was in Joy Division so he has a right to write the book...but he’s a very opinionated person and quite a lot of the time his opinions are wrong – so I’d be very wary of that book.”

Hooky's book, Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division will be released September 27th in the U.K., however fans in the U.S. will have to wait a bit longer.  The paperback version of the book arrives December 1st and the hardcover version follows on January 29th.

Watch some video from New Order's recent concert in Berlin as well as video from a handful of stops on Peter Hook's recent U.K. tour. Perhaps if you play the videos at the same time, it'll be like New Order reunited. Or not.

Last week, pop-culture/sports zine Grantland wrote an article on My Bloody Valentine's classic 1991 album Loveless and argued it is the greatest rock album released since 1990.  The feature is a good summary of the band for those unfamiliar, plus the piece goes on to delve into a discussion of reader polls/greatest album lists, leading to the following statement:

"It also explains why we tend to carve up music history along generational lines. (People are physically incapable of accurately judging the greatness of music that was released before they turned 13 and after they turned 35.)"

Mull that over for a moment, then head on over to read Bloody But Unbowed here.

FYI, My Bloody Valentine reissued Loveless, Isn't Anything, and EPs 1998 - 1991 back in June (available on import in the U.S.) and around that time Kevin Shields also revealed new music from MBV will be released later this year.  We're waiting, Kevin!

Next week Mark Gardener and Robin Guthrie release their collaborative single, "The Places We Go."  According to Creation and Guthrie's website, the single will be released July 9th through Soleil Apres Minuit and will be available digitally via "all good download services."  While you're waiting for the official release, you might want to take a listen to a solo acoustic version Gardener played at a recent radio session in Seattle.  More info and links to the radio session can be found here.

As previously mentioned, Mark Gardener is also busy with a new art/music collaboration called Hush Delirium, which features Anton Newcombe, Dean Garcia, Aziz Ibrahim, and Simon Welford.  Welford was recently interviewed by When The Sun Hits and revealed more info on the Hush Delirium project in addition to discussing Ride, the shoegaze/dreampop genre, and the music industry in general.  The interview is a very interesting read and is posted here

Finally, Mark Gardener fans may want to take a look at some other fan filmed video taken during a couple of recent west coast dates.  Follow the links below:
