Last night Michael Stipe once again took to the stage at New York City's Webster Hall opening for Patti Smith. Stipe's setlist from last night was identical to the December 29th show; Stipe explained to the crowd that the December 29th show was essentially a rehearsal for last night's show. Before he performed "New York, New York," he told a few stories about New York City, revealing to the crowd that it was such a big moment in his career to play NYC in 1981 (when R.E.M. opened for Gang Of Four at the Ritz, now renamed Webster Hall), and called it "the pinnacle of feeling like I made it."

Stipe was super chatty during his set -- he told the crowd Patti Smith instructed him to "talk a lot" between songs, which he took to heart.  Wikipedia, Dolly Parton, and rewriting "New Test Leper" eight times (!) were among some of the topics he worked into the set.  Take a look at video of Stipe's appearance from December 30th below, plus watch Stipe and friends sing Happy Birthday to Patti Smith:

Ex-R.E.M. leader Michael Stipe was the surprise opener for Patti Smith at her Webster Hall show in New York City last night. Stipe's rare solo appearance was his second live performance since R.E.M.'s disbandment in 2011. His six song set included covers from Perfume Genius, Patti Smith, Vic Chestnutt, and the classic "New York, New York" (made famous by Frank Sinatra.)  Alas, video from the set isn't available, though some great audio of "New York, New York" was posted onto You Tube, and another fan uploaded audio of "Hood" (Perfume Genius), and "New Test Leper" onto Soundcloud (via Spin.)  Stream audio below.

Patti Smith plays a second and final show at Webster Hall tonight. It's Smith's birthday today, so you never know who might show up as a surprise guest tonight!

The Cure kicked off their trio of Christmas concerts in London last night. As has been standard for the Cure, the band performed for almost four hours! During the band's set (and 4 encores!), they dusted off several songs they haven't performed in years like "Piggy In The Mirror," "Wailing Wall," and the live debut of "A Man Inside My Mouth." Every song from The Top was played last night (not in album sequence), and over the next two nights it's expected The Cure will be performing each song from The Head On The Door, and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, to prepare Cure fans worldwide for the next Reflections tour (as Robert Smith talked about in interviews earlier this year).

Take a look at the impressive setlist and watch fan filmed video from the show below:

A one-night only Mad Season reunion (of sorts) is planned for January 30th during the 4th annual Sonic Evolution concert.  The unique Seattle Symphony event takes place at Seattle's Benaroya Hall, and celebrates the city's rich musical history.  The first half of the program will include musical compositions influenced by Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and concludes with a piece composed by Mike McCready. After the intermission, original Mad Season members (guitarist McCready and drummer Barrett Martin) will be joined by guest vocalist Chris Cornell, and together they'll perform Mad Season songs backed by the Seattle Symphony.

Tickets for the event went on sale yesterday and sold out immediately. Fans interested in obtaining tickets can likely obtain them from a secondary seller, or hope the venue releases some extra tickets closer to the event.

Ministry's Al Jourgensen launched Ministry Mondays earlier this year, and every Monday he goes through his archive and uploads a Ministry-related goodie for fans to download. Today he unearthed a rare previously unreleased song from 1983!  The track was originally recorded for With Sympathy but has never before been released until now. As previously reported Jourgensen is involved in the film titled The Bridge. Uncle Al will have a role in the film, along with Ministry bandmate Sin Quirin, Joey Santiago of the Pixies, and more. An indie go-go campaign for The Bridge was launched to help raise money for filming, editing, soundtrack recording sessions and more. On December 12th, Noel Gallagher was the Christmas guest on BBC Radio 6. Gallagher joined host Steve Lamacq for an hour of conversation and music selected by the ex-Oasis star.  During the hour, he chatted it up with Lamacq about a wide variety of subjects -- his first "vertical" record player, how the third song on his records are reserved for "the hit," Morrissey ("people think of him as an activist, but he's a music lover...he brings mix cds out with him to the pub"), Bono, and what it would take to get Oasis back together. The full program is a whole lotta Noel, but if you're a fan, it's definitely worth streaming the entire program. Listen over at the BBC website, or stream below while available.

Gallagher's new album Chasing Yesterday will be released on March 2nd. Pre-order from iTunes, Amazon or Gallagher's official store. Two videos associated with Chasing Yesterday are available to view below.

Michael Stipe of R.E.M. appeared on CBS This Morning and discussed the band's history in promotion of the new six disc boxset REMTV, which compiles the band's MTV appearances and more. During the interview Stipe talked about growing up with REM, the band's difficult years after Bill Berry's departure, and that REM will never reunite ("I despise nostalgia, I'm not good at looking back.") Watch the full interview with Stipe below:

In addition to the six disc collection REMTV, REM also released a vinyl boxset titled 7in-83-88. which includes 11 singles with replicated original picture sleeve art and labels.  Rolling Stone caught up with Mike Mills to discuss the set, and during the conversation Mills talked about R.E.M. calling it quits, his favorite REM basslines, and his own record collection. He also was asked to give his opinion on people still not really getting what "The One I Love" is all about:

"...it's interesting and kind of funny to see that people get it wrong, but you know, I certainly don't think it's anyone's job to listen that closely to the words. There are 10 or 12 of my favorite songs, I have no idea what they're about or what the words even are. If you think that song's a love song, go hug your boyfriend or girlfriend. If you care to listen close enough, you see it isn't. But there are plenty of R.E.M. songs where I don't know what they're about."

Read the full interview with Mills over at Rolling Stone. The tracklisting for 7IN-83-88 is posted below and the set can be ordered here.

01. "Radio Free Europe" b/w "There She Goes Again"
02. "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" b/w "King of the Road"

David Bowie's single "Young Americans" will be reissued next year to commemorate the song's 40th anniversary. The classic song, recorded in 1974 and released as the title track to the album Young Americans in February 1975, will be released as a limited edition picture disc through Parlophone on February 23rd. The A-side is the 2007 mix of "Young Americans" (produced/mixed by Tony Visconti) and the AA side is a version of "It's Gonna Be Me" featuring strings (previously released in 2007 on the Young Americans special edition CD/DVD).  Additional details regarding the photos on the picture disc are posted below via David Bowie's official site:

"The black and white image on the A-Side of the disc is by the famous Hollywood photographer of the 1940s/50s, Tom Kelley. The image is probably more closely associated with the session that produced the cover for the CHANGESONEBOWIE album and Suffragette City single in 1976. However, this particular shot was first used for the Italian Fame 45 in 1975.

The photograph on the AA-Side was shot by Steve Schapiro, who recently had this to say about working with Bowie and this session in particular: “I think Bowie is very smart and I think he has a great sense of images and in coming up with new kinds of images. The first session I did with him started at four in the afternoon and ended at four the next morning when I did that picture of him on the motorcycle, and we used the headlights of a car to light it. He would constantly come up with new costumes and I would pick up my camera to photograph him and it would be an incredible outfit, but he would stop me and say, ’Wait a minute, I need to fix something,’ and he would go to the dressing room and come back 20 minutes later in something totally different. Fortunately, there would be a lot of things he would try on, so we would get a lot of pictures."

Pre-orders for the limited edition 40th anniversary Young Americans picture disc will be available soon.

The shoegaze documentary Beautiful Noise, directed by Eric Green, premiered in the spring at the Seattle International Film Festival, then screened in select cities worldwide in the fall. According to the film's official site, those who helped fund the Beautiful Noise campaign on Kickstarter will be receiving a digital download of the film shortly; physical copies (DVD, Blu-Ray, and other "goodies") will be available to purchase in the coming weeks. If you didn't take part in the Kickstarter and can't wait for a physical copy, Beautiful Noise is available to stream on demand through Vimeo (purchase stream on-demand). Details are posted here.

UPDATE: Beautiful Noise is now also available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray through the Beautiful Noise store.

Beautiful Noise examines how bands such as Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus & Mary Chain, and other seminal shoegaze acts influenced and inspired generations of musicians. One of the exciting features of the documentary is that several musicians who rarely grant interviews, (let alone on-camera interviews), like Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), and Jim Reid (Jesus & Mary Chain) have participated in the film. Other influential musicians in the alternative scene including Robert Smith, Bobby Gillespie, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, and Wayne Coyne also appear in the film.

Jesus & Mary Chain just wrapped up their UK Psychocandy tour which saw the band performing the classic record in full. During last night's gig in London, the band brought out a special guest to sing "Just Like Honey" -- it was none other than Miki Berenyi from Lush! Her appearance was something of a mini-Lush reunion as she was once again onstage with bassist Phil King. [King used to play bass for Lush, and is currently the touring bassist for JAMC.]

So far video of "Just Like Honey" from the gig hasn't appeared, though a fan photo can fulfill the "pics or it didn't happen" requirement, at least for now. Photo via Sonic Cathedral.

Fans of the classic noise/fuzz-guitar band Hum will want to check out some new material by the band Cloakroom. Cloakroom will be releasing a double album next year, and the album was engineered by Hum's Matt Talbott. Talbott recorded the album (in analog) at his Illinois-based studio Earth Analog, plus he's featured on vocals on a song titled "Dream Warden." The track is heavy and oh-so-Hum influenced, you might think you're listening to You'd Prefer An Astronaut

"Dream Warden" is the b-side to Cloakroom's new 7" single "Lossed Over," which was released earlier this week on limited edition colored vinyl (aqua blue or sea blue) and standard black vinyl. The official news broke last night that Ride is back together. On the heels of the announcement, Mark Gardener and Andy Bell of Ride were interviewed this morning on BBC Music 6 by host Shaun Keaveny to talk about their reunion! Gardener and Bell revealed that for the past few years they gotten together to discuss various offers to play festivals (offers come in around this time every year). This year they again discussed the possibility of a reunion and decided it was finally the right time to get back together.

Later in the interview they discussed the Stone Roses recent reunion and Gardener said their reunion inspired him greatly and made him want to play with Ride again. The two didn't dismiss the idea of making new music, but for now they'll focus on the classics for the live shows and see what happens.

The archive of the interview is posted on the BBC Music 6 website, and some highlights from the interview have been transcribed below. For more on Ride visit the official website here.

(on how the reunion came about)

Bell: we've gotten into the habit of looking at offers that come in this time of year, festivals for the next year, that's been happening for the past few years now. So we've been in contact over the past few years, we've been busy a lot of the time, I've been doing stuff with Beady Eye. It's just, the time is now right, we're in a bit of downtime, for the past few months and I was thinking oh, this would be good, let's make it work, from my point of view anyway, and go back and do whatever Beady Eye was going to do afterwards.

Gardener: I remember a few years ago, we've always gotten together throughout the year, we'd meet, and of course through the years, that question has never gone away. Any time I've ever spoken to any press or anybody, it's just what's coming at the end. So at a certain point I remember asking the guys the question at one of our get togethers if we could ever do this. I think we properly talked about it, I think it was 3 years ago maybe. But then of course there's been lots of stuff going on for us individually, I think Loz (Laurence Colbert) as we speak is in a van with Gaz Coombes (ex-Supergrass singer).

(on starting off as an indie band)

Gardener: Yes, I think it's a good feeling, it's madness in a lot of ways. We just went out our thing and did had no conception that one would even hit the charts or any of that. When it started happening it got a bit peculiar in a way.

Bell: We rushed through a lot in that time, it was a quick time, and before you knew it, it sort of exploded and finished in about, what, 5 or 6 years from the beginning.

Gardener: It was full on, quick. And the nature of the music was edgy and full on and I think it was a thing, ultimately it was always going to crash at some point although we couldn't see it. And the upsurge, the early part of it was just incredible, you had no idea it was going to happen. I think it's a great feeling because in the end you just hope you were doing something. Back then everything was analyzed then kind of tried to be put into boxes, you just hope that something you will stand the test of time because a lot of the music we're inspired by and loved did stand the test of time.

Bell: When we started we were indie kids, listening to the Valentines, House of Love, Spacemen 3, Loop, all that kind of thing. We started off sordidly in that indie world, and as we, we were only 18 when we started out, and at that same time we were taking on, oh yeah, have you actually checked out some of the Who albums and have you actually check out some of the Byrds stuff? People giving you things and you're taking them on board on tour and making them part of your sound. So as the years went on we got more and more towards that classic indie sound, but when the balance was right, it was a good mixture, 'cause you sort of had the muscle of the Who, and the sort of washy ethereal, noisy stuff all together in one thing. It was good.

Gardener: And I think at the end of the day you just trying...in the end you just want to do something interesting at least a different kind by mixing all these things together and you're hoping something sounds fresh and interesting. And obviously when it stops, you kind of think well, I did, maybe I've sold out, being trendy...you just think whatever now comes, that's done then, what's next. It's beautiful in a way, you sit back and realize the significance of it, and I think it's because we really just go for it and over time it's grown because it had that itch, I guess.

(on unfinished business, the Stone Roses reunion inspiring them to reunite)

Bell: The Roses' reunion, I was so happy for them, they played such great gigs, I'm still hoping they'll come out with an album.

Gardener: And it was the reunion that made me think, a lot of the time reunions happen, it still didn't make me think I gotta find the guys and say, hey we've gotta do this again, but when the Roses did it, it WAS a reunion that made me think actually we'll have to play again in Ride, it'll be amazing. That's the thing, my quote for the day is "two things rob people of their peace of mind: sonic work unfinished and sonic work not yet begun" I saw that the other day I've kind of amended the quote a bit to make it more interesting.

Gardener: What I've realized is that I love doing different projects and stuff that's been going on over the last few years but there's been something that's been really bugging me, and also the amount of times I've sat and watched festivals and headlines and people, I think that's alright, but what's exciting to me is that I know the audience is there, I don't have to worry about singles or any of that stuff...it feels really great we can just go and make that big sound in big places. And knowing systems and PAs, geeky stuff like that, will help out. It's kind of sounds bigger and better, so that's really exciting to me and that's what I feel about unfinished business.

Bell: From my point of view, I never took time when it was going to appreciate what was going on. I never went round and said, I better appreciate it, that I'm here on stage at festivals, before I knew it it was all finished, and I've moved on to whatever else. And it would be great to do it be able to be round and say I'm here it's cool.

On new material:

Bell: We've not discussed anything but I'm just assuming that we'll just do stuff we know everyone wants to hear.

Gardener: Exactly, I think as a result whenever we get together in a room, then I think, well, actually we've got a lot of homework to do. We have to learn the old chords again, but you never know what can happen with these things. I just want to plug an electric guitar in again, I've enjoyed acoustic things and stuff, but I'm greatly inspired to plug in and make noise again.

It's official: RIDE has reformed! Ever since the band broke up in 1996 fans have been desperate for a reunion. It all seemed like a longshot until recently, when Mark Gardener mentioned in an interview that he'd be up for a reunion. Since then rumors of a reunion had been bubbling, but it all intensified yesterday after Creation Records posted a photo of a massive Ride poster, which draped a building in Barcelona (Barcelona being the location of the Primavera Sound festival).

Today Mark Gardener and Andy Bell made it official -- the band is indeed back together and they'll be touring next spring. Gardener and Bell each spoke exclusively with NME about the reunion:

Andy Bell: "It's going to be really cool. As we were all still friends, we always thought when the time was right we'd do it. And now the time is right."

Mark Gardener: "People bought our records first time round but our music has grown in significance since we've been away... We want to give the people what they want. We'd be idiots to go out and play a new album, but that's not to say we wouldn't make new music."

So far nine tour dates have been announced, including North American shows in New York and Toronto. The full tour schedule is posted below via NME.  Let's hope even more dates are on the way!  Viva Ride!

A few months ago, Ministry's Al Jourgensen revealed in a tv interview that he was heading to Los Angeles to work on a film project. More info has been released about the project, which turns out to be titled The Bridge. Jourgensen will have a role in the film, along with Ministry bandmate Sin Quirin, Joey Santiago of the Pixies, and more. The Bridge was written and directed by Bobby Field (Guy In Row Five) and tells the story of a small town music prodigy who struggles with trying to make a name for himself while enduring several obstacles, including his own self-sabotage. Field opted to cast real musicians in the film because they have dealt with the similar issues in their lives.

An indie go-go campaign for The Bridge was launched to help raise money for filming, editing, soundtrack recording sessions and more. Find out more about the project on the campaign page, and visit the project's official Facebook page.

Fugazi's very first demo from 1988 is being released through Dischord on November 18th. As the story goes, the band recorded the demo at Inner Ear Studio in Washington DC after playing only 10 shows together.  After the demo was recorded the guys went back out on the road and would later return to the studio to re-record the material.  The demos from that first session would eventually be released as a cassette and distributed at Fugazi's live shows.  Dischord is now releasing the 11 track demo (which includes "Turn Off Your Guns," a demo that wasn't included on the original cassette).  All 11 songs on First Demo, is streaming ahead of its release now on Soundcloud.
