Kim Deal is releasing the first in a series of self-released 7" singles this weekend to coincide with her solo gig at All Tomorrow's Parties' Nightmare Before Christmas  in Camber Sands Holiday Park, England.  Deal's single, "Walking With A Killer" b/w "Dirty Hessian" will be available to purchase this weekend exclusively at the concert, as it appears Deal does not have an official website yet.   She is planning to self-release more material in the future (she's recorded demos of songs with a full band as well as some acoustic material) and is currently mulling over how exactly to release the material (singles vs ep vs album, etc.) So new solo music is on the way, stay tuned!

Kim Deal revealed in a new interview with Wears The Trousers that the Breeders' classic album Last Splash will be reissued next year as part of the album's 20th anniversary.  The band and label 4AD are currently going through old material and organizing the anniversary release.  Deal revealed the reissue will include demos, and b-sides, and may also feature the band's rare 1992 Safari EP (featured Kelley Deal and Tanya Donelly as part of the lineup).  The Breeders are also rehearsing for an anniversary tour!

Read the newsy and exlcusive two part interview with Kim Deal at Wears The Trousers: Part 1 & Part 2

Meanwhile Kelley Deal formed a project with Ampline guitarist Mike Montgomery and released their debut single "Fallout & Fire" last month.  Stream the track below and catch up with R. Ring here.

Johnny Marr debuted his new single and video for "The Messenger" on November 13th as part of the BBC's Legends Week. Marr's Radio 6 interview was previously unavailable to stream worldwide, but it has now appeared on You Tube. Take a listen to the full interview with BBC Radio 6's Sean Keaveny below - the interview begins with a story about how Marr's brother Ian introduced him to Noel Gallagher (and he received an early Oasis demo). Other topics included some of Marr's favorite albums, why he's doing a solo album after all these years, his post-Smiths' relationship with Morrissey, and falling into great company like Matt Johnson, Bernard Sumner, and Chrissie Hynde after the Smiths' breakup.

Johnny Marr is currently in New York and will appear onstage with Dinosaur Jr for the 25th anniversary of You're Living All Over Me, then heads back to Manchester for a gig with the Pet Shop Boys. Marr is expected to announce dates for his solo tour soon. Marr's solo album The Messenger drops February 26th.

On this day in 1991, Nirvana performed their hit song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the BBC  program Top Of The Pops.  The show routinely featured big name acts lip-synching to their hits, but as you would expect, Kurt Cobain was not interested in miming along to a pre-recorded backing track. Instead, Kurt polished up his crooning skills and delivered an amazingly entertaining performance. Top Of The Pops producers were annoyed by the version and asked Nirvana to re-record it, but the band declined and the hysterical version ended up airing. The performance was included on the Nirvana collection Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! and was later named the third best live TOTP performance in history by The Guardian. Enjoy it below courtesy of Requiem20101ThatEricAlper.

Legendary producer John Fryer (Depeche Mode, Yaz, Fad Gadget, Wire, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and tons more) teamed up with vocalist Rebecca Coseboom for the new project DarkDriveClinic.  The duo recorded a cover of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" and Depeche Mode's "Walking In My Shoes" for their ep DarkDriveClinic the covers.  Stream the Garbagesque three song ep below and purchase it as a name-your-own-price download on bandcamp.  Two other releases from DarkDriveClinic, The Kissing Hands and Noise In My Head, were released earlier this year and are also available on bandcamp.  Via Sideline.

Last year news surfaced about Shaun Ryder's involvement in a new program titled Shaun Ryder on UFOs.  The series, which airs on History next year, follows Ryder around the globe searching for UFOs, exploring the history of UFO sightings, and sorting out fact from fiction.   According to a new interview with NME, Ryder has been interested in UFOs since childhood and was interested in participating in the show to help give UFOlogists somewhat of a better image:

"The thing is, right, a lot of UFOlogists, are fucking up it mate, they’re fucking proper, proper up it, and they give it a bad name," says Ryder. "You know, some are not UFOlogists, just fucking raving bonkers, you know, they’re just absolute knobheads. Then you’ve got some that are really smart and intellectual, and you’ve got real scientists as well."

Shaun Ryder on UFOs premieres on History in the U.K. in 2013 (premiere date TBA) and we HOPE this manages to get picked up in America.  PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!  Read more about the program over at History.

“I’m delighted to be making this series! Once they see you, they keep an eye on you…”  Shaun Ryder

Watch Quicksand's full set captured June 10th at the Revelation Records' 25th anniversary show in Pomona, California:

Consequence of Sound published a new interview with New Order's Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris today.  Props to COS and interviewer Michael Roffman - the subject of Peter Hook was never broached (or if it did, it wasn't included in the feature).  Instead the interview touched on New Order's recent tour, setlist, writing new songs, the Olympics, and Manchester.

Sumner revealed Chicago reminds him of home, and made the following comments on the "industrial grime" of Manchester:

"When we were in Joy Division and making those records, everything was industrial grime and smashed windows and disused factories, red brick buildings...We used to light a fire of garbage just to keep us warm in the winter, it was that cold. And, it was kind of all this Victorian era decay and industrial decay and grime...It was good for our music because your environment does shape your music to a certain extent. Manchester gave us Joy Division and L.A. gave us the Beach Boys, for example."

Sumner also confirmed the band will likely go back to a more electronic sound for the next New Order record, though they're all about just writing good songs whether they're guitar based or electronic:

"...what I’ve come to realize, really, is just write a good song. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. You can’t, you know? Levi’s never managed this; reinventing jeans did they? They came up with a great idea straight away."

Read the full interview with Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris over at Consequence Of Sound.

In the fall of 1991 Pearl Jam were on the road opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers - a pretty prime gig at the time for the virtually unknown band (the Smashing Pumpkins, who also just released their debut album Gish were also on the bill). While on tour, Pearl Jam played a handful of acoustic gigs at record stores, and footage from a couple of the in-stores have appeared online! The Verve's epic song "History" was released on the band's 1995 full length A Northern Soul.  "History" was also released as two separate maxi-singles - History ep I and History ep 2.  Both are worth picking up if you're a fan - the extra tracks are amazing.  Save yourself some money and order from Amazon UK, because Amazon US is only offering the eps through subsellers who are charging major bucks.  The maxi-singles are also worth having for the awesome cover art - the picture (featuring the band underneath the marquee "all farewells should be sudden") was taken before the band announced their (first) sudden split.

A 4 CD set featuring U.K. indie guitar pop gems from the 1980s is expected to be released in 2013. Scared To Get Happy - A Story Of Indie Pop 1980-1989 compiles hard to find nuggets from both obscure and well known artists from the era.  So far the tracklisting isn't fully firmed up, but the organizers indicate most of the songs listed below are expected to be included. If you're a fan of 1980s indie UK music just glancing at the list of bands below will likely bring a VERY big smile to your face (Felt! Milltown Brothers! Sun & The Moon! Close Lobsters! Analog Loyalist, the sound engineer who lovingly remastered Joy Division's Warsaw sessions and recently made them available as a free FLAC download has put his magic to work again! This time Analog Loyalist (aka Drew Crumbaugh) took Joy Division's February 8, 1980 concert recorded at the University of London and refined the sound. The concert was previously released in 2007 as bonus content on the Closer reissue, but Crumbaugh was disappointed in the remaster, so he put his remastering skills to work.  Crumbaugh's new and improved version (one he hopes will eventually be reissued by Rhino) is now available as a free FLAC download. Major props to Crumbaugh for his painstaking work on such an awesome project! Read more about the project here and download the free FLAC files here.  (via Spin)

Stream the 2007 version of the 1980 concert below.

Stream two additional Joy Division concerts from 1980 - the first concert is audio from the February 29th gig at the Lyceum in London, and the second concert was recorded in Amsterdam on January 11th.

Vince Clarke and Martyn Ware release a limited edition ten disc set of ambient music (two previously released albums, plus eight discs of previously unreleased material) called House of Illustrious on November 26th. Take a listen to the podcast below (also available to download) and head over to their website to order the boxset.  A collection of promo videos for House of Illustrious are posted here.

A remastered and expanded version of the soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas by the Vince Guaraldi Trio is now available.  The new version includes different mixes/alternate takes (for instance, the version of "Linus & Lucy" is the recording originally used in the film) and adds three previously unavailable songs - "Greensleeves," "Great Pumpkin Waltz," and "Thanksgiving Theme" - all of which are available to purchase as part of the album, or may be downloaded individually. Be warned: if you're a fan of the old school version of the soundtrack, it might be best to take a listen to all of the samples over on Amazon before purchasing - some customers have voiced disappointment in the remastered versions of old favorites, due to the "updated" sound of the recording. The remastered version of A Charlie Brown Christmas is out now on physical cd and as a digital download.

Since the big day is right around the corner, settle in and enjoy A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving below:

Last November a Bob Mould tribute concert hosted by Matt Pinfield and featuring performances by Dave Grohl, Ryan Adams, Grant Lee Phillips, members of The Shins, The Hold Steady, Superchunk, (and even Bob Mould himself!) took place at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Filmmaker Justin Mitchell spent the day filming Mould and performers prior to the concert as well as capturing the full show in high quality audio and video for a DVD release.  A Kickstarter campaign to fund See A Little Light: A Celebration of the Music & Legacy of Bob Mould began earlier this week and runs through December 22nd.  Some of the pledge incentives include prints, vinyl, an autographed stratocaster similar to the one played by Mould, handwritten lyrics, and more. Head over to Kickstarter to pledge now.  The campaign video and fan filmed footage from the November 21st concert featuring Dave Grohl and Bob Mould is posted below.

Noel Gallagher was interviewed on BBC Radio 6 as part of legends week.  Gallagher's been asked time and time and time again about getting Oasis back together, and today's interview with the BBC was no different.  Here's a clip of Noel's response to the Oasis question:

There you have it. Oasis isn't getting back together unless Noel needs the money.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds released their debut album last November and followed up the release with a the DVD International Magic Live at the O2, which are both available to purchase here.  A second HFB album was recorded with Amorphous Androgynous, however Noel has revealed in several interviews that the sessions have been scrapped.

Meanwhile Beady Eye revealed they're working on their second album and have enlisted TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek to produce the record.

Trent Reznor had a busy day today - besides releasing two separate projects (he wrote the theme for Call Of Duty Black Ops II plus released An Omen ep with his side project How To Destroy Angels) he appeared on Reddit to answer fan questions.  Some of the more interesting revelations he made are posted below:

On the Year Zero miniseries:

"This is currently in a holding state. We didn't find the right match with a writer, and really have been avoiding doing what we should have done from the beginning: write it ourselves. We = Rob and myself. This project means a lot to me and will see the light of day in one form or another."

On The Fragile reissue:

"The 5.1 mixes are done and sound amazing. Alan was the only person who could have possibly done it, and he did not disappoint. There are a couple other elements involved that we want to get right before we put this into production. These involve packaging and additional content. Patience, my friends."

On the first computer/software he used for music:

"I had a Commodore 64 with, I think, the Sequential Circuits Model 64 Sequencer Cartridge. And it was the greatest thing in the world (or so I thought at the time). Moving on... The first "real" platform I used for composition was a Mac+ running Performer. Pretty Hate Machine was done with this."

On his favorite gear he's ever owned:

"My Dad got me a Wurlitzer 200a electric piano as a preteen, and it pretty much changed the trajectory of my life. That piano is long gone, but I did recently pick one up, which I love."

On coming up with 'Halo' for all the NIN releases:

"I remember Depeche Mode did a similar thing and I thought it was cool. Somebody please remind me what the word Depeche Mode used was, I'm too old to remember what it was."

(Depeche Mode used Stumm, Mutel, and Bong)

On what's next for him:

"A number of things. Tweaking some things for the HTDA full LP (coming in Spring), helping Josh out on a new QOTSA track, working with Roy, starting rehearsals for two bands."

In case you're wondering, Trent didn't reveal much about new NIN material.  A fan asked:  "Can you disclosure any future plans for Nine Inch Nails?"

Trent's full response: "Sure I could."

Johnny Marr appeared on BBC Radio 6 today as part of Legends week and debuted the title track from his forthcoming album, The Messenger. Watch the official video for "The Messenger" below - the song and video are pretty amazing!

Marr was also interviewed on BBC Radio 6 and spoke about Morrissey and their "non-rivalry."

The archive of the show is posted here.

Johnny Marr revealed previously that the album was written while on the road with The Cribs and has an English/European feel to it.   Marr will release his debut solo album The Messenger on February 26th and is expected to announce live dates shortly.  Marr heads to New York City's Terminal 5 on December 1st to help Dinosaur Jr celebrate the anniversary of their classic album You're Living All Over Me.  Marr won't be playing the full show with Dinosaur Jr but will be joining them for a few songs.

Update: The Madchester Guitar auction on Ebay ended yesterday. The guitar, which was signed by Manchester music royalty (including members of the Stone Roses, Smiths, Oasis, Charlatans, Chameleons, and more), fetched 6,600 British pounds - over 10 thousand U.S. dollars! The auction was organized by Adam Masters, who came up with the idea to raise funds after the death of his friend's newborn baby.  Masters spent almost two years contacting bands and obtaining signatures, and he did a fantastic job! Proceeds from the auction of the "Madchester" guitar will be donated to Clair House Children's Hospice in Liverpool and Francis House Children's Hospice in Manchester.
