Alison Moyet - stream new LP & BBC live performance

Alison Moyet is back with a new solo album titled the minutes.  The album is out now in the U.K. and will be released in North America on June 11th through Metropolis Records. Take a listen to a full stream of the minutes here and pre-order the minutes from iTunes, Amazon, or Metropolis Records.

Moyet appeared on the April 26th edition of the BBC program The Graham Norton Show and performed her single, "When I Was Your Girl." Check out the performance and short interview below:

The Fall return with new LP 'Re-Mit'

The Fall return with a new album titled Re-Mit later this month. The band's line-up remains the same as for their last album (2011's Ersatz GB): Mark E. Smith, Eleni Poulou, David Spurr, Pete Greenway, and Keiron Melling. Re-Mit will be released in the U.K. through Cherry Red on May 13th. In North America the album will be available digitally on May 13th, and the import physical CD version arrives May 21st. R.E.M. celebrate 'Green' 25th anniversary

R.E.M. is preparing to release the 25th anniversary edition of the 1988 album Green on May 14th. Ahead of the release R.E.M. is celebrating Green by posting video from TourFilm (the 1990 live concert release shot on tour supporting Green). Take a look at "Get Up" and "Stand" from TourFilm below or just stream the full concert on Hulu:





The 25th anniversary edition of Green features the remastered original album with a bonus disc of live performances taken from the November 10, 1989 Greensboro, North Carolina, stop on the Green world tour. The bonus disc includes 21 live songs (five additional tracks that were scrapped for space were released last month on the limited edition Live in Greensboro E.P. which is streaming here). The physical CD version of the anniversary edition comes packaged in a hard clamshell box and includes with four postcards, a foldout poster, and new liner notes. Noel Gallagher talks Morrissey, Marr, and the Smiths

Noel Gallagher was interviewed as part of the BBC's celebration of the Smiths' 30th anniversary. During the interview Noel had a hard time deciding on his favorite Smiths' song, though he eventually chose the original version of "Hand In Glove," revealing he's still listens to it from time to time, "it's still got something--it's dark, beautiful, kind of emotional, euphoria, with sadness to it, just got everything."

Gallagher didn't agree that without the Smiths there wouldn't be Oasis, but he did conclude that all music is derived from Elvis and the Beatles.  During that part of the discussion he made the following insightful comment:

"You know, the Smiths followed on from the Jam--it's quite fascinating to think that the Jam split in '83, that's when the Smiths first appeared, and then as soon as the Smiths kind of disappeared, the Stone Roses appear, and as soon as the Stone Roses disappear, Oasis appear, and it's almost like, there's some unseen, you know, somebody's moving the chess pieces around...we're all part of the same song I reckon."

Book Of Love reunite & play first show since 2009

Book of Love played their first live show since 2009 at the club Numbers in Houston on April 27th. Though the show was a one-off performance, it appears there's possibly more in the future for Book of Love. In an interview with the Houston Press, Ted Ottaviano explained that Book Of Love's synthy 80s sound is back in vogue and though the original band members had previously been busy with their lives and other projects, the time seemed right to get the band back together:

"Our lives were all in a place where we weren't interested (in re-forming...but now we're in a place where we might want to work on some new music."

Ottaviano didn't say whether the band has started working on new music yet, but it seems very likely that fans heard the last of Book of Love.  Read the full interview with Ottaviano over at the Houston Press and watch some fan-filmed video from their April 27th reunion show below:

Johnny Marr + Andy Rourke perform "How Soon Is Now?" in NYC

Johnny Marr's solo tour played Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn last night and near the end of the show, Marr invited his old bandmate Andy Rourke onstage to play bass on the Smiths' classic "How Soon Is Now?" - Marr gave Rourke a fantastic intro, telling the crowd he's "one of my best friends in the world and still one of the best musicians I've ever heard." Black Flag (official) drop new song & take dig at competiting reunion

Black Flag featuring members Ron Reyes, Greg Ginn, and Gregory Moore, drop a new album next month and are offering up a new song "Down In The Dirt" right now as a free download. Grab the song here and stream it below:



FYI: two separate Black Flag reunions are active and touring right now - one is using the name Black Flag (Reyes/Ginn/Moore), and the other is touring under the name Flag. The 'Flag' version features Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, Bill Stevenson, Dez Candina, and Stephen Egerton. Both Black Flag reunions are on tour in North America. Interestingly enough, Black Flag and Flag are playing Detroit within a couple days of each other. Flag plays Orion June 8th at Belle Isle, and Black Flag is playing the Majestic Theater on June 10th. Probably a good thing the shows are separated by a day or two, because check out what Black Flag had to say about Flag on the official Black Flag website:

New Order's Power, Corruption & Lies turns 30

New Order's classic album Power, Corruption and Lies was released on this day in 1983. The album is widely regarded as one of New Order's best and most influential albums, and it frequently appears on 'greatest album of the 80s' lists music magazines/critics publish from time to time. Power, Corruption and Lies was the album where New Order defined their sound - they released Movement and a few other singles previously, however those songs, in part anyway, sounded like their old band Joy Division. While recording PCL in 1982, the band tinkered around with samplers they had just bought weeks before--Gillian Gilbert revealed the band learned how to use samplers by recording farts--to develop the 'New Order' sound.  The result is perfection.

New pro-shot video of Damon, Graham, Noel + Weller

Back in March Britpop history was made when Noel Gallagher joined Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon on stage for a performance of "Tender" at the Gallagher-curated Teenage Cancer Trust benefit.  Fan filmed video has been circulating since the concert, but now a fantastic pro-shot version of the historical performance has been uploaded by Teenage Cancer Trust.  Check out the video (bonus: includes some great shots of Paul Weller on drums!)

OMD talk band history & prep "Dresden" release

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark recently did an interview with Amsterdam online 'zine Face Culture. The six part interview focuses on the band's history - Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys discussed their early days, all their albums including their latest English Electric, and even revealed some of the songs in their catalog that they don't like and wish they hadn't released. In Death It Ends - Occvlt Machine

LOVE this.  In Death It Ends is the latest musical project from Porl King* (ex-singer of Rosetta Stone and Miserylab).  In February, a new album from In Death It Ends titled Occvlt Machine was released, and the music is brilliant!  Fans of dark, synth-but-not-too-synth, post-punk will dig this (label aufnahme + wiedergabe describe the music as "ghost wave" and the trailer for Occvlt Machine labels the music "progressive adult hipstercore").  If you like dark, coldwavish music with a bit of mystery, it'll be up your alley.  Check out a couple of tracks from the album below and stream the rest of Occvlt Machine over at Bandcamp. A digital copy of the album is available to purchase from Bandcamp (it's not on iTunes or Amazon), and a demo version of the album is available for free here.  A vinyl version of Occvlt Machine (2nd pressing) will be released on May 9th directly from aufnahme + wiedergabe.

Iggy & the Stooges rock the Colbert Report

Iggy & the Stooges appeared on the Colbert Report last night. Stephen Colbert grilled Iggy Pop about the old days, not having the Motown sound, and going around shirtless (best question ever: "at this point could you wear a shirt or would your body reject it like a bad organ?"). Matt Johnson lends voice & sounds to Yellofier

Ok, so it's not exactly new music from The The, but here's a cool project Matt Johnson worked on recently - Yellofier.  Yellofier is a new sampler/sound app created by Yello co-founder Boris Blank and Swedish music producer Håkan Lidbo.  With the app users record everyday sounds (a barking dog, ringing alarm clock, flushing toilet, or whatever else) and the sounds can be Yellofied (aka transformed by the app) into music.  Besides lending his voice to the tutorial/promo video for Yellofier, Matt Johnson is one of several musicians who created songs and sounds specifically for the free app, which was released for iPhone, iTouch, and iPad at the beginning of April. Check out the promo video narrated by Johnson below:



Yellofier partnered with Electronic Beats for a song competition: experiment and create a new song with Yellofier or remix previously recorded songs/sounds (ones that come with the app from Matt Johnson, Carl Craig, Trentemøller, the Orb, Orbital, and more) and submit your creation. The grand prize winner scores a flight to Zurich, Germany to hang out and Yellofy the city with Boris Blank!  The competition runs through June 1st - visit Electronic Beats or the official Yellofier site to find out more about the contest, and check out some of the songs that have already been submitted.

Beady Eye - Second Bite Of The Apple

Beady Eye debuted, "Second Bite Of The Apple," the first single from their forthcoming album today.  The band revealed in an interview with BBC 1's Zane Lowe that the song was the last track they recorded during the album sessions and they decided to do something a little different and "weird" with the drums.  Stream "Second Bite Of The Apple" and the single's b-side, "Dreaming Of Some Space" below.  Be from Beady Eye arrives June 10th and is available to pre-order in the U.K. and Europe now.  Pre-order info/links for the North American release are expected shortly.
