Johnny Marr dropped a bombshell in his about-to-be-released biography Set The Boy Free -- the Smiths came so very close to reuniting in 2008. In a excerpt of the book, published in the Guardian, Marr revealed that he met up with Morrissey at a pub in 2008 (he had been in contact with him earlier in the year after reaching an agreement to remaster the Smiths' catalog). When they met up the drinks were flowing, as were the memories, and the two eventually discussed reuniting and how a potential reunion could work:

"Suddenly we were talking about the possibility of the band re-forming, and in that moment it seemed that with the right intention it could actually be done and might even be great.

"For four days it was a very real prospect...Morrissey and I continued our dialogue and planned to meet up again. I went to Mexico with the Cribs, and then suddenly there was radio silence. Our communication ended, and things went back to how they were and how I expect they always will be."

Just imagine being at the pub witnessing Morrissey and Marr rekindling their friendship! Lucky for them, it was 2008 -- a time where smart phones were just getting introduced and camera phones took mostly worthless pictures -- so they were able to keep it on the down low. Had their pub meetup occurred a few years later, there would undoubtedly be photographic and video evidence.

Though there was no further talk of reuniting, Marr told the Guardian he was in contact with Morrissey again in 2010 after he saw a picture of a young protester wearing a Smiths shirt -- the photo captured the protester confronting police in front of the House of Parliament, which Marr found quite moving. He texted the photo to Morrissey and the two ended up sharing a few texts but that was it:

"...although I felt I’d created a moment of friendship, an air of disaffection and distrust remained between us. It was a shame."

Read the full excerpt plus an in depth interview with Marr over at the Guardian .

Set The Boy Free will be released in North America on November 15th (in the U.K. on November 3rd). Pre-order from Amazon.

Morrissey kicks off a new leg of his U.S. tour later this week. Today he announced three more dates including Chicago, Cleveland, and a Detroit area stop November 23rd at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.

Hang on just a moment though, because there's a little drama with the Detroit area show (isn't there always?).  The issue isn't that he's playing the Royal Oak Music Theatre -- apparently he's gotten over his 2011 beef with security.

No, the problem here is Morrissey already has a November 23rd date scheduled in El Paso at the Abraham Chavez Theatre that is currently on sale! Looking at the tour itinerary it appears the El Paso show is either getting moved or it will be axed altogether.

Updates on the fluid El Paso/Royal Oak Mozgate situation will be posted once available.  The full tour itinerary, including the new dates, is posted below.

UPDATE (10/24 @ 4:07PM): Morrissey's November 23rd show in El Paso has been canceled.  On sale info for the Detroit show will be announced shortly.

UPDATE (10/25 @ 11:15) Tickets for the November 23rd show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre go on sale Friday at 10am. The pre-sale kicks off October 26th at noon.

Today's episode of business in the front, party in the back comes courtesy of Icehouse and their 1987 video for "Electric Blue." It'd be hard to argue that anyone had a bigger, better mullet than Iva Davies. So massive. But so were the jams.  Good times.

Get another glimpse of Davies and his wild hair in the video for "Crazy," also filmed in 1987.

What about that outfit?!?

R.E.M. bassist and songwriter Mike Mills composed his first classical work Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra. Mills collaborated with longtime friend and critically acclaimed violinist Robert McDuffie on the six movement composition, which was released earlier this month through Orange Mountain Music. The orchestral rock & roll fusion has been described by Rolling Stone as "cinematic but never schmaltzy, rock-inflected but never corny, classical but never stuffy." Purchase Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra from Amazon. Stream the third movement of the concerto "Sunny Side Up" and read more about the project here.

In support of the album, Mills and McDuffie hit the road this week with chamber orchestra Fifth House Ensemble for a tour of the U.S. and will play Music Hall in Detroit on November 6th. Tickets for the event are available here.

Noel Gallagher recently sat down with music journalist and friend Keith Cameron to discuss the recording of Be Here Now. London psychedelic/krautrock outfit TOY return with their highly anticipated third album Clear Shot on October 28th. The album is more accessible than the band's previous output, take for instance "I'm Still Believing," which is super catchy, barely-three-minute track that would easily fit on alt radio if given a chance. This accessibility shouldn't be offputting to old TOY fans -- there's tons and tons of blissful psychedelic, shoegaze, dreampop, and experimental moments to enjoy, particularly the epic album closer "Cinema."  Clear Shot is a superb and swoonworthy addition to the band's discography.
