Gutting and heartbreaking news: The legendary Pete Shelley, co-founder of Buzzcocks died earlier today (December 6th) at the age of 63 from a suspected heart attack. The tragic news was confirmed by Buzzcocks and their manager on social media.

Buzzcocks formed in 1976 and went on to play Sex Pistols' seminal Lesser Free Trade Hall show in Manchester later that year. The next year they released their iconic debut EP Spiral Scratch -- the EP became legendary not just for the incredible music, but also for the fact that Buzzcocks released the EP on their own. The DIY nature of the band was a massive influence on countless aspiring musicians (not the least of which were Joy Division and The Smiths), proving that you really could pick up an instrument, play shows, record music and be successful on your own without the financial backing of a label.

Shelley of course was always at the helm, leading Buzzcocks with his brilliant songwriting and creativity. Buzzcocks had the DIY ethic, but also importantly they also had SONGS -- catchy, energetic, memorable, and with interesting and thought-provoking themes. It's hard to imagine where music would be today without Buzzcocks and Pete Shelley blazing the way. And not only did Shelley help shape the world of alternative/punk/post-punk music with Buzzcocks, but later in the 80s he went on to release several majestic solo dance-oriented records packed with club anthems that remain timeless.

Truly a genius.
