Last week Johnny Marr's new song "Upstarts" debuted online. Today Marr debuted the official video for "Upstarts" on NME and is available to view below. "Upstarts" serves as the first official single from Marr's debut solo album The Messenger. The album will be released on February 25th internationally and February 26th in North America. Pre-order The Messenger through iTunes or Amazon (cd or vinyl w/mp3).
Last week Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark announced details for a European tour and today they announced some fantastic news for fans worldwide - OMD return with a brand new album titled English Electric, on April 8th. According to the band, the album is an attempt to move forward, yet without losing their distinctive sound. Last summer, Andy McCluskey was interviewed on the BBC about the sound of English Electric and had the following to say about the new album:
"Lyrically, English Electric seems to be an exploration of how one's Utopian dreams often end in dystopic failure and regret. Musically, it uses many current sounds and styles. Dresden sounds very 'OMD,' Our System is like a Glitch style Stanlow/ROTT if that can be imagined. Helen of Troy sound like Georgia meets first album Depeche. Please Remain Seated, Decimal, and Atomic Ranch use programmed robotic voices and have a hint of Dazzle Ships to them."
English Electric will be preceded by the single, "Metroland," which is scheduled to be released on March 25th. English Electric will be released April 8th as a digital download, standard CD, deluxe CD/DVD, vinyl LP, and collectors' tin boxset. Pre-order info will be posted shortly.

The Dark Flowers, the collaborative project featuring Peter Murphy, Jim Kerr, Catherine AD and others, release their debut album Radiolandin Europe on January 21st. The first single from the album is "Fast Forest Rain" featuring Kate Havnevik. Take a look at a short interview with Havnevik below:

Stream a previously released track from The Dark Flowers below - "Night Is The New Day" was released on the Dark Flowers' 2012 ep When Stars Fall and features Jim Kerr on vocals.
The Replacements' five track covers ep, Songs For Slim, will be released on January 15th via an Ebay auction. As previously reported, Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson got together last year to record a few songs as a benefit for Slim Dunlap, the band's ex-guitarist who suffered a stroke in February 2012. In order to raise as much money as possible for Dunlap, only 250 copies will initially be pressed and all of the copies will be auctioned off starting January 15th. Fans who are unable to take part in the auction will still have a chance to own and enjoy the ep - according to the Songs For Slim website, a digital version of the release is expected after the auction is over, and a commercial (non-auction) vinyl version is planned for the spring.
The track listing for Songs For Slim is posted below with the original artist indicated in parentheses. The songs were newly recorded by Westerberg & Stinson except "Radio Hook Word Hit," which was recorded by Chris Mars separately - Mars did not take part in the recording session with his ex-bandmates.

Songs For Slim by the Replacements is the first in a series of benefit albums for Dunlap. Other artists including Frank Black, Peter Buck, Jakob Dylan, John Doe, Lucinda Williams, and many others are preparing to release music as part of a Songs For Slim series. Other releases in the series will be handled similarly - the initial pressings will be auctioned off on Ebay, then digital and commercial vinyl versions will be released. So far, two other auctions have been scheduled: a Steve Earle/CraigFinn split single is scheduled for a February 15th auction and Lucinda Williams/Tommy Keene release will follow on March 15th.

New Order are preparing to release their long awaited outtakes album Lost Sirens. The album features eight tracks recorded during the sessions for 2005's Waiting For The Sirens' Call. Lost Sirens was supposed to be released a few years ago, however due to acrimony between New Order and Peter Hook, the album was held up. Eventually an agreement was reached, clearing the way for the release of Lost Sirens. The album will be released on January 15th through Rhino, but the album is streaming in full right now ahead of its release through Rolling Stone. Stream Lost Sirens here! Last night Chris Connelly's David Bowie cover band Sons of the Silent Age played a benefit show at the Metro in Chicago for the Pablove Foundation and Rock for Kids. Shirley Manson from Garbage was also in attendance and joined Sons of the Silent Age on stage for a few songs! During the encore performance of "How Soon Is Now?" Moz called out "Kyle" (referring to the young fan who made it on stage at a previous show in October). Kyle was at the Long Island show on Wednesday and jumped on stage to give Moz a hug! Of course, that led to more on stage hugging, which gave security a run for their money.

Trent Reznor's project How To Destroy Angels release their debut full length album Welcome Oblivion on March 5th. The band made the announcement via Purple Television yesterday and also debuted a video for "The Loop Closes," a track from 2012's An Omen ep. Enjoy it below.
Meanwhile, Reznor continues to work on Daisy, the new music streaming service that he's creating with Dr. Dre. Yesterday a few bits of news on Daisy were revealed, though details are still pretty sketchy. Both Rolling Stone and the New York Times reported Reznor was named 'chief creative officer' of the project, and the target launch for Daisy is by the end of the year. As previously reportedJohn Cale plays three shows at the Bam Opera House in Brooklyn next week, including a January 16th tribute to Nico. Life Along the Borderline: A Tribute to Nico features Cale along with special guests Kim Gordon, Mark Lanegan, Sharon van Etten, Magnetic Fields, and more. Cale's January 18th & 19th shows feature a full performance of his 1973 album Paris 1919 backed by the Wordless Music Orchestra, followed by a second set of songs including tracks from his latest album Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood.
Interestingly enough the same night Cale plays a tribute to Nico, ex-bandmate Lou Reed performs at an Allen Ginsberg tribute. Reed, Laurie Anderson, Anne Waldman and others celebrate the vinyl, and digital reissue of Ginsberg's First Blues at Housing Works Used Book Cafe in New York. Details on that are posted here.

Peter Hook's biography Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division was released overseas last fall and the book will finally see a release stateside on January 29th. To coincide with the release, Hook is launching a two-week promo tour of the U.S. where he'll read excerpts from his book and answer questions from fans. John Cale is preparing to play three shows at the Bam Opera House in Brooklyn next week. The first shows takes place January 16th and is an event Cale organized as a tribute to Nico, vocalist/actress/Andy Warhol protégé who appeared on Velvet Underground's 1967 debut album. Life Along the Borderline: A Tribute to Nico features Cale along with special guests Kim Gordon, Mark Lanegan, Sharon van Etten, Magnetic Fields, and more.

On January 18th and 19th, Cale returns to the Bam Opera House to perform his 1973 album Paris 1919 in full along with the Wordless Music Orchestra, followed by a second set of songs including tracks from his latest album Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood. Cale previously performed Paris 1919 with an orchestra in 2007 (overseas), and most recently performed the album in Los Angeles in 2010.
Bob Mould's live tribute concert film See A Little Light: A Celebration of the Music & Legacy of Bob Mould featuring Bob Mould with guests such as Dave Grohl, Ryan Adams, Matt Pinfield, and more is scheduled to be released on January 15th. Fans who didn't take part in the successful Kickstarter campaign can still enjoy the release - a digital download/streaming version of the concert is now available to pre-order. The digital download is available in a variety of formats and can be viewed on mobile devices, Xbox, or anything that plays mp4 files. Meanwhile, Bob Mould's Austin City Limits taping is scheduled to air on PBS January 26th (check local listings for the exact time in your area). Mould taped the episode in November and performed tracks from his latest album Silver Age. The January 26th episode also features a performance from Delta Spirit.
Interestingly enough, the night of the ACL premiere Mould will be performing in San Francisco as part of the Delocated Witness Protection Program Variety Show with Jon Glaser. Tickets for that event are available here.

According to an update from Echo & the Bunnymen, Ian McCulloch is demoing new tracks with producer Youth and is preparing to play more solo acoustic shows in 2013. McCulloch also recently uploaded a live version (audio) of "Bring On The Dancing Horses" from last year's show at Union Chapel featuring Ian Broudie. Take a listen below:

Imagine taking mp3/wav/digital files and turning them into a physical product. That's just what Amanda Ghassaei from Instructables did. She took her 3D printer to the next level and converted digital audio files into printable, playable records! The sound is somewhat distorted, but the concept is unique, and Ghassaei has FANTASTIC taste in music - she used songs from Joy Division, New Order, Nirvana, The Pixies, Radiohead, and Daft Punk to create her prototype demo video!

Ghassaei published an explanation of how she went about creating the records, and posted very detailed instructions for readers interested in attempting it on their own. The discussion begins with info on other audio projects she's worked on, then there's a section on the mechanism of a record player (how records work, audio signals, etc). Fair warning - it might be a bit too much information for just the casual reader, but if you'd like to have a go at producing your own records, take some time to read through the fantastic resource. David Bowie was born on this day in 1947. Bowie may be celebrating his birthday, but he's giving fans the present - as the clock struck midnight in the U.K., Bowie unleashed a brand new song and announced plans to release a full length album, which will be his first in over a decade. The Next Day, drops March 12th in North America (March 8th in Australia, March 11th everywhere else), and is preceded by the new single "Where Are We Now." The official video for "Where Are We Now" is streaming now on Bowie's newly relaunched website. The last video is of Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell performing Temple Of The Dog's "Hunger Strike" at Lollapalooza in 1992 (Pearl Jam and Soundgarden both played Lollapalooza that year and at some stops on the tour, Cornell and Vedder took the stage for a TOTD song or two).
