My Bloody Valentine announce analog remasters for Isn't Anything + Loveless

My Bloody Valentine announced analog reissues for their seminal albums Isn't Anything and Loveless. Both of these influential and beloved albums were remastered using the original 1/2" and 1/4" tapes and will be released on January 18th. Kevin Shields offers up further details on the remasters:

"The 180 gram vinyl albums are mastered from analog tapes using Studer A80 VU PRE and Neumann VMS 80 cutting lathe for full analog signal path.

They come in heavy weight tip-on style gatefold sleeves with poly lined printed inner sleeves.

The vinyl is purely analog cut and does not include downloads"

These reissues should be a sonic treat - Kevin Shields does not release anything unless it meets his incredibly high standards. The mostly instrumental self-titled album is an outstanding trippy-experimental-noise cauldron of awesomeness which seamlessly incorporates elements of electro, post-punk, drone, synth, and fuzz. The percussion on this record alone makes it a phenomenal listen - fans of Test Dept, Einstürzende Neubauten will love this.

The Smiths reissue their seminal 1986 album The Queen Is Dead as three expanded sets on October 20th, and all three versions of the release -- 2CD, 5LP, and 3CD/1DVD box -- include eight previously unreleased tracks. The Smiths premiered the first ever demo "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (Take 1)" in July when they announced the expanded sets. Belly launch campaign for new LP

Last year Belly reunited for a handful of live shows and since then they've been on a tear writing and recording new music. Though the album is still untitled and doesn't have a release date, Belly officially launched a Pledge Music campaign for the album.

They promise to give fans a glimpse into the making of the album, as well as share exclusive music and other updates with those who pre-order. They also reveal they recently recorded a cover of "Hush-a-Bye Mountain" and will be releasing a digital download version of the track as an exclusive shortly. Additionally Belly will be donating a portion of profits to hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees: MC5, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Radiohead + more

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees for 2018 were announced overnight.

The nominees this year: MC5, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Radiohead, The Cars, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, LL Cool J, The Meters, The Zombies, Moody Blues, Nina Simone, Link Wray, Rufus ft Chaka Khan, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Rage Against The Machine, Dire Straits, J Geils Band, and Bon Jovi.

The inductees -- selected by a different committee -- for the Class of 2018 will be announced in December with the induction ceremony scheduled to take place April 14th in Cleveland.

Don't expect miracles - the Rock Hall is notorious for snubbing classic alternative acts. The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, Pixies, Bauhaus, The Replacements, The Cure, Roxy Music, XTC, Can, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Kraftwerk, The Jam, Sonic Youth, and SO many more have been bypassed over the years.

Now would be a great time to revisit the t-shirt Jeff Ament wore to this year's induction ceremony when Pearl Jam got inducted. The shirt was a nod to all the legendary bands that have been snubbed by the Rock Hall institution.

The Horrors released their fifth studio album V last month, and though the cover art might be a bit...hmmm...interesting...the music is indeed brilliant. Like their previous output, this new 10 track album by the London five piece is another delicious platter of the band's intriguing mix of shoegaze, krautrock, and indie-pop. Third Man Records announce: The White Stripes Live in Detroit 1999-2000-2001

Third Man Records announced details today for Vault Package #34 which continues the year long celebration of the 20th anniversary of The White Stripes. If you are a fan of The White Stripes, especially a fan in Detroit, you are going to LOVE this package!

The White Stripes Live in Detroit: 1999-2000-2001 includes three White Stripes' concerts: July 30th, 1999 at the Magic Bag in Ferndale; August 18th, 2000 at the Magic Stick in Detroit, and June 7th, 2001 at the Gold Dollar in Detroit. Distorted bootleg recordings of these concerts (or portions thereof) have made the rounds on the net for years, but finally these legendary concerts will be released as proper live recordings through Third Man.

The albums were pressed on 180 gram red, white, and black vinyl by Third Man Pressing in Detroit and are housed in custom die-cut sleeves, plus include high quality reproduction prints of posters Jack White created for the shows. As noted on Third Man's website, White only made 20 copies of each flyer for the shows back in the day - it cost a dollar for each color copy at Kinko's back then! Third Man promises the replicas in the Vault Package are "gorgeous, instantly frame-worthy and much lighter on the pocketbook than the costly originals."

Paul Weller kicked off his North American tour in support of A Kind Revolution on Sunday. Yesterday before his show at New York's Irving Plaza he stopped by the Late Show with Stephen Colbert for a performance. Decked out in a funky jacket and sweet spectacles, the Modfather and his amazing band rocked out a rousing version of "Woo Sé Mama." Check it out below:

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark released their new album The Punishment of Luxury on September 1st. The night of the release the band played an hourlong launch show at Tape in London. OMD will be hitting the road in North America in support of The Punishment Of Luxury in next year. The band revealed that each night of the tour the audience will get to vote on one of the songs in the band's setlist, so if you're going to see OMD get there early and take your smartphone along.

The Smiths unearth "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" from live archive

After pretty much taking a week off The Smiths are back with another full live track from their archives. This week's gem is "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" from their December 12th, 1986 performance at Brixton Academy in London and features some impressive Moz growling. Like the previous installments in the series, this live version will not be included on the newly expanded editions of The Queen Is Dead. Stream below or on Spotify.

UPDATE: The Smiths have now also uploaded the full version of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" live in Chicago. [This was last week's song, however they originally only uploaded a short snippet, but have now righted that wrong.]

The Breeders premiere new single + announce 7" series

The Breeders have returned with their first new song in years. The incredibly fantastic new single is called "Wait In The Car" and features the band's classic Last Splash lineup -- Kim and Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs, and Jim Macpherson. The quartet reunited in 2013 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Last Splash, and since then they've been working on new material. Today they've unveiled the first taste of their labor -- the short and sweet and oh-so-catchy single "Wait In The Car."

The video for "Wait In The Car" was created by Chris Bigg and Martin Andersen and stars...a brick (or two). Bigg and Andersen explain their brick fascination:

"We both liked the idea of using something iconic yet quite banal. An old brick has a story and it’s a beautiful raw object. We started collecting more and more (some intact, some broken) and realised how different they all appear, each one having its own identity."



"Wait In The Car" is out now as a digital download and on streaming services. The single will be released physically on limited edition 7" colored vinyl. Three different colored vinyl editions with a different b-side and cover art will be released - each edition is limited to 1500 copies:

1. Orange vinyl edition b/w "Archangel's Thunderbird" (Amon Düül II cover) will be for sale on the Breeders' upcoming live shows

2. Yellow vinyl b/w a cover of Devo's "Gates Of Steel" will be released October 27th and available exclusively at independent record stores

3. Red vinyl edition featuring Kim Deal's cover of Mike Nesmith's "Joanne" (details will be announced later this year)

Mute chronicles definitive visual history with photobook 'Mute: A Visual Document'

Mute Records announced a book detailing the definitive visual history of the influential label. Mute: A Visual Document: From 1978 - Tomorrow was curated by Mute founder Daniel Miller and London author/musician/producer Terry Burrows.

Miller originally founded Mute to release his debut single "Warm Leatherette" but the label soon went on to launch the careers of soon-to-become electro behemoths including Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget, and Nitzer Ebb. Miller would eventually snag other iconic acts including The Birthday Party, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and I Start Counting plus he obtained rights to archival material from other well established artists including Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubauten, A Certain Ratio, and more.

The 320 page hardcover book includes over 500 illustrations - many of these previously unseen - plus the book is filled with commentary and stories from various Mute bands and those who worked with the label over the years.

Thom Yorke announces 'Tomorrow's Modern Boxes' reissue + solo shows

Thom Yorke announced today that his second solo album Tomorrow's Modern Boxes will be reissued via XL in December 8th.

Yorke originally self-released the album through BitTorrent (as a legal download) in September 2014 and hoped his experiment might be a useful option for other artists. At the time he made the following comments about his Bit Torrent experiment:

"The new Torrent files have a pay gate to access a bundle of files. The files can be anything, but in this case is an 'album'. It's an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around. If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work. Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves. Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers.

If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done. The torrent mechanism does not require any server uploading or hosting costs or 'cloud' malarkey. It's a self-contained embeddable shop front. The network not only carries the traffic, it also hosts the file. The file is in the network."

Though Yorke's experiment was successful - the album was 2014's most legally downloaded release and has racked up over 4 million legal downloads - other artists didn't exactly jump on the BitTorrent train.

Video: Morrissey plays classics, new songs, and covers The Pretenders

Morrissey kicked off BBC 6 Music Week today with a rare performance at the BBC's Maida Vale studios in London. Moz ripped through a 16 song which showcased seven songs from his forthcoming album Low In High School. He also covered The Pretenders' "Back On The Chain Gang," and performed several other classics from his solo catalog.

As you would expect, Morrissey was full of quips between the songs. He thanked BBC 6 Music for inviting him, then said "we don't get many invitations." Before performing "When You Open Your Legs" he referred to the song title claiming "it's about cycling," then after playing it he claimed the song would be chopped from the broadcast and said "the fun is knowing it's going to be chopped." There were a few cringeworthy moments when he attempted a political joke as well as a joke about Chrissie Hynde, referring to her as "B Hynde." Awkward.

The full performance airs on the BBC tonight, which means it's highly likely the full set will also be streaming on the internet soon. Depeche Mode set Kimmel appearance + Dave Gahan guests on new electro project

Depeche Mode continue on the road in the U.S. in support of Spirit. In addition to their dates on the west coast this week, they'll appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live this Wednesday, October 4th for a performance. They'll likely be performing their latest single "Cover Me" on the program - watch the official video for the single below:



Meanwhile Dave Gahan is featured on the new album from Swiss producer/electro-whiz Kurt Uenala. Uenala collaborated with Depeche Mode for years and now he's launching his own dark electro project titled Null + Void. Gahan contributes his sleek vocals to a song titled "Where I Wait" on the forthcoming album Cryosleep. The full version of "Where I Wait" is expected to be released soon, but in the meantime enjoy a short preview of the track below along with the previously released single "Paragon." Morrissey will perform live for BBC 6 Music as part of their Music Week festivities. Moz's performance is scheduled to take place tomorrow (October 2nd) around 6:30 AM ET (11:30 UK time). The Smiths 'Strangeways Here We Come' 30th anniversary

Thirty years ago today The Smiths released their seminal studio album Strangeways, Here We Come. The band's fourth and final proper studio album was released after the band had broken up, but what a way to go out. Strangeways is a Morrissey/Marr masterpiece.

Indeed The Queen Is Dead most often receives praise by critics and fans for being the Smiths' crown jewel, however it is a colossal mistake to dismiss Strangeways. Like TQID, the rich and insightful final album by the Smiths is another collection of timeless songs, and boasts even stronger songwriting, lyrics, and production than its predecessor.

The brilliance is non-stop on Strangeways - "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" and "Death Of A Disco Dancer" are incredible album highlights, but those influential songs only scratch the album's surface. Morrissey's prescient and biting commentary never sounded better than on "Paint A Vulgar Picture," not to mention the classics "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" and "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish."

And yet, there are even more timeless treasures! From the haunting opening of "A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours" to Moz's forlorn insistence on album closer "I Won't Share You," Strangeways is a flawless non-stop battery of gems.

Strangeways has more than earned its place in music history. Give it some love today.
