R.I.P. Roky Erickson

The legendary Roky Erickson, godfather of psychedelic rock, has reportedly died at the age of 71. Roky's brother Mikel Erickson confirmed the sad news but has not revealed the circumstances behind his brother's death.

Erickson rose to fame as the leader of the influential 13th Floor Elevators and continued to be a trailblazing figure in music over the years. He inspired alternative rock acts including The Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo & The Bunnymen, Primal Scream, Spacemen 3, R.E.M., The Black Angels, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and countless more. Many of these artists came together in 1990 to honor Erickson on the tribute album Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye.

Richard Ashcroft honored with prestigious Ivor Novello Award

Richard Ashcroft has been honored with a prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting award. The legendary songwriter and musician received the award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music at the 64th annual Ivor Novello Awards which were announced last week.

The institution recognized Ashcroft's "30 year career that has resulted in a highly distinguished body of work and cemented his place as one of the great British songwriters of all time."

The Ivor Novello Awards celebrate excellence in songwriting and screen composition across works released in the UK each calendar year and is considered one of the most distinguished and renowned awards in the UK.

The Cure's 30th anniversary 'Disintegration' show

The Cure's 30th anniversary Disintegration live stream took place today at the Sydney Opera House. As expected, the show was phenomenal - both musically and technically/stream-quality. Robert Smith began the show with some b-sides/demos/rarities recorded during the Disintegration sessions including "Delirious Night," "Noheart," "Fear Of Ghosts,"and Smith admitted to the crowd that the rarities/b-sides were great songs and it was sad they never played any of them (until now). After the set of rarities, The Cure took a five minute intermission then returned for the full album performance of Disintegration, followed by a three song encore.

Morrissey reveals he's already recorded the follow up to 'California Son'

Morrissey has already recorded the follow up to his latest album California Son. The legend revealed in a new interview that he's recorded 12 new original songs which will likely see the day early next year. He told Fiona Dodwell in the exclusive Music-News interview:

"We have recorded a new studio album, but when it's released depends upon how much breathing space is allowed California Son. So, anything could happen... and anything usually does happen. It's an album of 12 original songs, so is, in its way, the follow-up to Low In High School. We recorded it in France once again, and it's fantastic. I would imagine a January release, but I don't mind if it's later."

In the same interview Morrissey also revealed that he's particularly pleased with how his cover of the Roy Orbison classic "It's Over" turned out:

"It's Over, I have no doubt whatsoever, is the best vocal of my entire life."

The Cure announce concert film screenings + 'Disintegration' live stream

The Cure announced their live concert film will screen in theaters worldwide starting July 11th. Anniversary 1978 - 2018 Live In Hyde Park London was captured during The Cure's 40th anniversary concert in London's Hyde Park last July in 4K by Tim Pope and mixed in 5.1 at Abbey Road Studios by Robert Smith and Paul Corkett.

Tickets for the cinematic screenings go on sale June 6th. The list of participating theaters has not yet been revealed, however those interested can sign up for updates here. View the setlist for the concert film below.

Meanwhile The Cure's fifth and final 30th anniversary Disintegration show streams live worldwide from the Sydney Opera House tomorrow (May 30th). The stream begins at 6am ET (8pm AEST/Sydney time). The Rolling Stones grant Richard Ashcroft songwriting credit for "Bitter Sweet Symphony"

Richard Ashcroft announced today that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards agreed to give up their share and songwriting credits of "Bitter Sweet Symphony." This is a huge win for Ashcroft, even though he had to wait over twenty years.

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" was released in 1997 as the first single off Urban Hymns. The track was The Verve's biggest hit single in North America and has a bit of a convoluted history.

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" includes an orchestral sample of "The Last Time" -- the track "The Last Time" was originally written/recorded by The Rolling Stones (inspired by The Staple Singers song "This May Be The Last Time"), but the version The Verve lifted was from an orchestral arrangement of the song released by Andrew Oldham Orchestra.

As the story goes, The Verve obtained permission from the Rolling Stones to use a sample from Andrew Oldham Orchestra's version of "The Last Time" for "Bitter Sweet Symphony," but Stones management later claimed the Verve broke the agreement by using more of the song/sample than was previously agreed upon. Meanwhile Andrew Oldham Orchestra's record label sued The Verve since The Verve obtained permission from the Rolling Stones, but did not obtain permission from the label to use Oldham's orchestral arrangement. A mess indeed.

After a LOT of legal wrangling and drama, various deals were struck which ultimately led to The Verve giving away most of the songwriting credit/royalties to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. This amounted in a HUGE loss of income for Richard Ashcroft since "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was a global smash and received massive amounts of airplay. Some twenty years later, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards agreed to give back the songwriting credit.

Richard Ashcroft released a joyous statement today announcing that the songwriting credit for "Bitter Sweet Symphony" has now reverted back to The Verve. Read the full statement below:

"It gives me great pleasure to announce as of last month Mick Jagger and Keith Richards agreed to give me their share of the song "Bitter Sweet Symphony."

This remarkable and life affirming turn of events was made possible by a kind and magnanimous gesture from Mick and Keith, who have also agreed that they are happy for the writing credit to exclude their names and all their royalties derived from the song they will now pass to me. I would like to thank the main players in this, my management Steve Kutner and John Kennedy, the Stones manager Joyce Smyth and Jody Klein (for actually taking the call) lastly a huge unreserved heartfelt thanks and respect to Mick and Keith.

Electronic Sounds pays tribute to Factory Records

The UK electronic magazine Electronic Sound pays tribute to the legendary Factory Records in June. The June issue of the mag (issue 54) includes a double seven-inch titled A Factory Assembly, which features tracks from A Certain Ratio, The Durutti Column, Section 25, and Minny Pops. The seven-inch is a tribute to the rarity A Factory Sample (FAC 2) which commands big money on the secondary market -- if you see one for less than $200, consider it a steal.

A Factory Assembly will be included with Electronic Sound issue #54, which will be published June 13th. Copies of the issue will be available to purchase through the Electronic Sound website. Additionally those interested can obtain a magazine subscription here.

The original FAC 2 limited edition double seven-inch (pictured above) was released in 1979 and featured Joy Division ("Glass" and "Digital"), The Durutti Column ("No Communication" and "Thin Ice"), John Dowie ("Acne," "Idiot," and "Hitler's Liver"), and Cabaret Voltaire ( "Baader-Meinhof" and "Sex In Secret").

Curtis' life was featured on the BBC program Great Lives in 2008. Host Matthew Parris, British poet Simon Armitage and Peter Hook discussed Curtis' life, musical impact, and his final days. During the show, Hook played a short snippet of an unreleased version of Ian Curtis singing "Love Will Tear Us Apart" recorded by Malcolm McLaren. Curtis took his own life the day before Joy Division were scheduled to leave England to come to America for their first tour. The full Joy Division North American tour itinerary isn't officially available to view, however this website attempted to piece the tour together using Rob Gretton's notes, club ads, and other scraps of info. FYI, there was a Detroit date scheduled for May 26th at Bookies.



A short documentary from 1987 featuring Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, and Alan Erasmus talking about Ian Curtis and Joy Division. There's also a few comments made about the commercialization of Curtis' death.



An excellent documentary on Joy Division simply titled Joy Division was released in 2007. The film includes interviews with Curtis' band members as well as key players like Peter Saville, Anton Corbijn, and Tony Wilson, among others. The full documentary has been pulled from You Tube but it is available to view on Netflix.

New Order announce live LP captured during wall-of-synth residency

In the summer of 2017 New Order performed a residency as part of the Manchester International Festival at the legendary Granada Studios. New Order performed classics from their catalog backed by a 12 piece synthesizer ensemble and stunning visuals created by Liam Gillick with input from the legendary Peter Saville. The series of critically acclaimed wall of synth shows later became the focus of a Sky Arts documentary New Order: Decades, which premiered last fall.

Today New Order announced plans to release a live album of material captured at the legendary MIF residency. ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes.. (Live at MIF) features the July 13th, 2017 show along with three additional tracks recorded at their other residency shows.

Depeche Mode unearth "Stripped (Alternate Cut)" video

Depeche Mode unearthed the "Stripped (Alternate Cut)" from their archives. "Stripped" was the first single and video released off Black Celebration in 1986. The band shared the alternate cut video today in promotion of their upcoming limited edition single box sets for Black Celebration and Music For The Masses which arrive as individual box sets later this month. Like the original version of the "Stripped" music video, the alternate cut version was directed by Peter Care. View both versions of the video below.

As with the previously released limited edition box sets in the series, the sets for Black Celebration and Music For The Masses feature audio mastered from the original tapes, and includes original singles and special 12" vinyl. The artwork for the outer box packaging was inspired by the original releases, while the vinyl sleeves contained inside feature the original single artwork. The box sets will be released May 31st and are available to pre-order here.

Depeche Mode's previous albums Speak And Spell, A Broken Frame, Construction Time Again, and Some Great Reward were issued as box sets in 2018 and are available to purchase here.

The Ocean Blue prep new LP + announce U.S. tour dates

The Ocean Blue return this summer with a brand new album. The highly anticipated release will be the band's seventh studio album overall and their first full length in over six years. The album will be released in July -- the official date and details are still to be announced, but are expected shortly.

In the meantime, The Ocean Blue have firmed up a handful of tour dates including a Detroit area stop at the Magic Bag in Ferndale on November 1st. Tickets for all the tour dates are on sale now with the exception of the DC and Virginia shows. View the tour itinerary below:

The Waterboys announce North American tour

The Waterboys return with their 13th studio album Where The Action Is on May 24th. Today the legendary band announced they'll hit the road in North America in support of the record this fall. The tour itinerary includes a stop at the Majestic Theatre on September 26th. Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday, May 17th.

Ministry unearth 'Chicago 1982' live record

Ministry have released an encore edition of an early Ministry set captured live in 1982. All six tracks found on Chicago 1982 were recorded live at On Broadway in Chicago on May 18th, 1982. This iteration of Ministry includes Al Jourgensen, Stephen George, Bob Roberts, and John Davis. Unfortunately all 180 copies of the limited edition 12" vinyl sold out immediately, however the album is still available as a digital album download though Bandcamp.
