Noel Gallagher curates Teenage Cancer benefit shows

Noel Gallagher curated the 2013 Teenage Cancer benefit shows scheduled to take place next March  in the U.K.  Today the partial lineup for the gigs were announced and include  Kasabian, Ryan Adams, Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Primal Scream, and even comedians Russell Brand & Noel Fielding. Gallagher himself will play one of the nights (the same night that features Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon!) and he revealed to BBC Radio 6 that he might just join them on stage during their set:

Peter Hook interview + New Order officially announce Lost Sirens

Peter Hook has been doing a lot of interviews lately - he released his memoir Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division a few months ago in the U.K. (the book is scheduled for a January release stateside) and he's also gigging with The Light playing Joy Division albums in full (New Order albums get their turn next month). New Statesman was the latest media outlet to catch up with Hooky for a little chat - a few highlights from the interview are posted below:

On whether he thinks he'll ever be able to reconcile with Bernard Sumner:

"Yeah probably on the end of a pair of dueling pistols or maybe in a boxing ring"

On "Atmosphere" being played at funerals:

"The emotional power of it when it's coupled with grief or loss is unbelievable. I don't think Ian meant that either because Atmosphere was written very early in our career before he was ill..."

On New Order:

"One of the problems in New Order was that it wasn't "do as I do" it was "do as I say""

On Joy Division/New Order legacy:

"If I had to sit and count how many people we've influenced, it's unbelievable. Between Joy Division and New Order we must be responsible for about half the music business...the thing is you should never consider suing anybody because they sound like you...it's something you don't do because it's against the way you're brought up"

Mark Lanegan covered WhoMadeWho's song "Below The Cherry Moon" (from their 2012 album Brighter) and in return WhoMadeWho covered Lanegan's song "Deep Black Vanishing Train" (from Lanegan's album Blues Funeral). Kim Deal - solo set at All Tomorrow's Parties Nightmare Before Christmas

While Frank Black was busy rocking out with Dinosaur Jr on Saturday night, Kim Deal played a solo show as part of All Tomorrow's Parties Nightmare Before Christmas (curated by Shellac!) at Camber Sands Holiday Camp, UK.  According to fan reports Deal played her new single "Walking With A Killer," another new song "Are You Mine," along with well known songs including the "Breeders' classic "Cannonball," and a cover of the Chris Bell/Alex Chilton song "You & Your Sister."  After a little coaxing by fans, Deal played the Pixies' "Gigantic" - she told the crowd she didn't know the guitar part, and she forgot some of the words! She also hung out for the festival on Sunday and at one point joined in for some karaoke in one of the ATP tents! Rhodri Marsden covers Beck's song "Just Noise"

Beck's unconventional new album, Song Reader, is a collection of twenty songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music (the hardcover version featuring sheet music for each song with individual pieces of art can be purchased here). So far, Beck hasn't posted full, finished versions of the songs, but he has encouraged fans and musicians to interpret and record the songs. The awesome Rhodri Marsden from Scritti Politti took the challenge and recorded Beck's song "Just Noise" and posted it on You Tube plus wrote about the experience in his column for the Independent. Stream Rhodri's version of "Just Noise" below and head over to Beck's site to listen to other Song Reader submissions.

Telephoned - download free Singles soundtrack covers ep

Telephoned, the Brooklyn cover/party band that wowed crowds (and even the critics at Pitchfork) at South By Southwest have released a free ep titled Singles.   All four songs are covers of tracks originally found on the soundtrack to the classic 1992 Cameron Crowe film Singles - "Drown" (Smashing Pumpkins), "Would?" (Alice In Chains), "Nearly Lost You" (Screaming Trees), and "May This Be Love" (Jimi Hendrix). The covers sound decidedly different than the originals - the tracks feature female vocals (Maggie Horn), and guitars have been replaced by Sammy Bananas' electro-trip-hoppy grooves with help from Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth. Grunge loyalists may want to steer clear, but for everyone else it's kind of a fun take on some classic tracks. Stream the ep below and download it for free here. Joy Division - Analog Loyalist remasters pulled

A couple of weeks ago, Analog Loyalist (aka Drew Crumbaugh) put his remastering skills to work and posted his own remasters of Joy Division's Warsaw and followed that up with a remaster of Joy Division's 1980 concert University of London Union. The Warsaw remaster didn't get much attention from the big music sites, but the live concert did - it was mentioned in Pitchfork, Consequence Of Sound, Spin, and a zillion other sites. Turns out the publicity didn't help - Analog Loyalist received two notices from Mediafire (the site hosting the free FLAC downloads) stating the Joy Division files for the University of London Union were taken down due to DMCA complaints. Most likely it was Rhino who filed the complaints - the 1980 concert is available commercially as part of the label's 2007 reissue of Closer.

Analog Loyalist has made comments in the past that the remaining members of Joy Division were aware of his remasters and seemed to offer consent. After the files were pulled down this week, Peter Hook contacted Analog Loyalist by email and offered up the following statement suggesting he go "legit" and urging him to do things the legal way:

"From my point of view you must stop this now. If you want to help us and your listeners let's submit it to Warners get permission off the band and let people download it OFFICIALLY even if it's for a nominal sum, this is a much better way of doing it. You get the job done and the recognition and do not get the aggro! They are clamping down on people like you. I suggest you go legit, your hooky"

The story appears far from over, but for now it looks like ALL the Joy Division/New Order files Analog Loyalist has posted have been removed. Let's hope Analog Loyalist can work things out with the band and Warner, because he's stated previously that he has some other interesting JD demos/material he's working on that I'm sure fans would be interested in hearing and purchasing.

Kim Deal preps solo releases; Breeders reissue on the way

Kim Deal is releasing the first in a series of self-released 7" singles this weekend to coincide with her solo gig at All Tomorrow's Parties' Nightmare Before Christmas  in Camber Sands Holiday Park, England.  Deal's single, "Walking With A Killer" b/w "Dirty Hessian" will be available to purchase this weekend exclusively at the concert, as it appears Deal does not have an official website yet.   She is planning to self-release more material in the future (she's recorded demos of songs with a full band as well as some acoustic material) and is currently mulling over how exactly to release the material (singles vs ep vs album, etc.) So new solo music is on the way, stay tuned!

Kim Deal revealed in a new interview with Wears The Trousers that the Breeders' classic album Last Splash will be reissued next year as part of the album's 20th anniversary.  The band and label 4AD are currently going through old material and organizing the anniversary release.  Deal revealed the reissue will include demos, and b-sides, and may also feature the band's rare 1992 Safari EP (featured Kelley Deal and Tanya Donelly as part of the lineup).  The Breeders are also rehearsing for an anniversary tour!

Kraftwerk's Karl Bartos new LP Off The Record

Karl Bartos, ex-member of electro-pioneers Kraftwerk (part of Kraftwerk's classic lineup) has announced the follow up to his 2003 album Communication. Bartos' new album Off The Record features 12 tracks that were taken from song ideas he wrote during Kraftwerk's heyday (he kept a secret acoustic diary and jotted down ideas while on the road).  The album drops March 15th, but you can enjoy a first taste of music from Off The Record - listen to a sample of the album's first track "Atomium" below:

Johnny Marr - BBC Legends Week interview

Johnny Marr debuted his new single and video for "The Messenger" on November 13th as part of the BBC's Legends Week. Marr's Radio 6 interview was previously unavailable to stream worldwide, but it has now appeared on You Tube. Take a listen to the full interview with BBC Radio 6's Sean Keaveny below - the interview begins with a story about how Marr's brother Ian introduced him to Noel Gallagher (and he received an early Oasis demo). Other topics included some of Marr's favorite albums, why he's doing a solo album after all these years, his post-Smiths' relationship with Morrissey, and falling into great company like Matt Johnson, Bernard Sumner, and Chrissie Hynde after the Smiths' breakup.



Johnny Marr is currently in New York and will appear onstage with Dinosaur Jr for the 25th anniversary of You're Living All Over Me, then heads back to Manchester for a gig with the Pet Shop Boys. Marr is expected to announce dates for his solo tour soon. Marr's solo album The Messenger drops February 26th.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit on BBC

On this day in 1991, Nirvana performed their hit song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the BBC  program Top Of The Pops.  The show routinely featured big name acts lip-synching to their hits, but as you would expect, Kurt Cobain was not interested in miming along to a pre-recorded backing track. Instead, Kurt polished up his crooning skills and delivered an amazingly entertaining performance. Top Of The Pops producers were annoyed by the version and asked Nirvana to re-record it, but the band declined and the hysterical version ended up airing. The performance was included on the Nirvana collection Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! and was later named the third best live TOTP performance in history by The Guardian.
