~Scott Weiland lashing out at Axl Rose for some unseemly remarks he had made about Slash and Matt Sorem
2006's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees: Black Sabbath, Blondie, Sex Pistols, Miles Davis, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Of course, the Sex Pistols blew off the induction ceremony.

The Beastie Boys spent time in 2006 promoting their new dvd, Awesome! I Fucking Shot That. The concert dvd was shot from a fans perspective--the Beasties gave 50 fans digital cameras and instructed them to film the band's show at Madison Square Garden.

A broke Courtney Love sold 25% of her Nirvana catalog rights to a businessman for 50 million dollars. Courtney claimed she needed a partner to take Kurt Cobain’s songs and bring them into the future and into the next generation.

Bono from U2 was immortilized in wax. The statue was unveiled at Madame Tussad’s museum in Times Square in March--just in time for St. Patty’s day.

Chris Demales from Less Than Jake was arrested during the band’s video shoot in L.A. The video was shot in a food court in a local mall, which annoyed the mall rats that were looking for proper nutrition. Security asked the band to leave, but apparently Demales lingered around too long—so he was arrested and charged with trespassing.

Cold called it a day. Scooter Ward made the big announcement in February. He later announced that he had formed a new band with his ex-bandmate Sam McCandless. When November Falls is expected to release their debut cd in 2007.

Morrissey upset Canadian fans when he called for a boycott on Canada due to the country's practice of slaughtering baby seals. Canadians turned the tables on the Moz and called on all the citizens of the country to boycott the new Morrissey cd, Ringleader of the Tormentors.

Avril Lavigne and Sum 41's Deryck Whibley got married over summer in Beverly Hills.

Jack White became a father in 2006. His wife Karen Elson gave birth to baby girl the couple named Scarlett.

Slipknot's Chris Fehn took part in the Regency MDA Golf classic in Iowa. His team took first place--Fehn is an avid golfer, plus he was paired with Jim McMahon of Chicago Bears.

Chad Kroeger from Nickelback was charged with drunk driving after being pulled over in British Columbia in June.

Mars Volta's drummer, Jon Theodore, left the band. He was replaced by Blake Fleming, who played with the band on some early demos back in the day.

3 Days Grace did a unique tour to promote their new cd, One X. They toured rehab facilities, treatment centers and detention centers for free. Adam Gontier came up with the idea for the tour--Gontier is living clean now and he wanted to encourage others to turn their lives around.

Good Charlotte's ex-drummer Chris Wilson is still pissed that he was fired in 2005. He ranted to the press accusing the Madden brother of screwing him out of money. He claimed, “I live in a van, you live in mansions.” Band said that he was well paid for drumming but he didn’t write songs so not owed publishing.
Here's another look back to the year that was 2006, at least music news-wise:

Korn drummer David Silvera opened new restaurant in Huntington Beach, California. The Silvera Steak House & Lounge opened its doors in the spring.

In December, Silvera announced he would take a break from Korn for awhile. Silvera will still be a member of Korn, but he won't appear on the band's new studio cd that expected to drop this summer.

Alice In Chains reunited in March for a few shows. The new line up featured former members Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney, Mike Inez, along with new vocalist William Duvall. Things went so well the band decided to launch a full scale world tour. The band played to a sold out crowd at the Emerald Theater in November.

Death Cab For Cutie released a dvd titled Directions. The dvd contains 12 short films--one for each song on the band's cd Plans. Death Cab debuted the short films one at a time on their website leading up to the release of the full length dvd.

311 moved their signature event--311 Day--from New Orleans to Memphis in 2006. The band couldn't get clearance to play at the Uno Lakefront Arena in New Orleans since the arena was still closed due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, so 311 day ended up taking place in Memphis for one year only.

Many bands showed their support for the troops by providing entertainment: Avenged Sevenfold hung out on an Air Force base in DC, and signed autographs. Staind played U.S. Army bases in Germany in March. Shinedown played for troops in Texas at Fort Bliss as part of USO tour. Kid Rock spent Christmas in Iraq hanging out with U.S. soldiers and military personnel.

A semi-Smiths reunion took place in March. Johnny Marr and the Healers played a benefit show in Manchester, England. The benefit was organized by ex-Smiths bassist, Andy Rourke. Marr invited Rourke onstage, and they played "How Soon Is Now" together.

Johnny Marr joined Modest Mouse in August. Marr is a full fledged member of the band and will appear on the band's new cd, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, which will drop on February 6th.

More Chevelle drama took place this year. In 2005, Chevelle fired their bass player Joe Loeffler, which caused drama mainly because the members of Chevelle are all brothers. The band claimed that they didn't really fire him, since Loeffler would constantly talk about quitting and how he hated to tour. He even quit the band a few times. At any rate, in 2005, Loffler was out of the band. In 2006 Loffler couldn't let bygones be bygones, so he decided to sue his ex-bandmates/brothers in 2006. The lawsuit has not yet been decided, so we'll have to wait until 2007 to see how this new drama unfolds. One wonders what the holidays might have been for the Chevelle camp this year, especially since Joe Loffler's replacement was his brother in law Dean Bernardini.

Ville Valo from HIM was busted in January in Finland for allegedly threatening to kill his neighbor and resisting arrest.

Fuel's lead singer Brett Scallions quit the band and went on to join the X's. After a long search (which included an offer to an American Idol contestant), the band found a new lead singer and started to work on a new cd.

In the spring a sex tape emerged that featured Scott Stapp and Kid Rock! The two weren't getting it on together--there were women on the tape with them. The two rockstars tried to prevent the tape from being sold on the internet.

Stapp ended up tying the knot in February (not to any of the women feature in the sex tape) and things seemed blissful until a drunken Stapp was arrested for public intoxication the night after the wedding. Stappy blew a 0.18 and was promptly arrested, however charges were later dropped.

In one last piece of Stappy related news, our Loveable Rockstar released a solo cd in March. Unfortunately for him, the cd was panned by critics, and largely ignored by the public at large. Even his ex-bandmates aren't too keen on the Stappster these days. Mark Tremonti told Rolling Stone that there would not be a Creed reunion. He said, "I haven't listened to a Creed song in years. I can't stand it. I wouldn't want to play those songs again. It was a complete nightmare."

Marilyn Manson got hitched in January of 2006. Unlike Stappy, he didn't get arrested the day after his wedding. Instead of posing for a mug shot, Manson's wedding pictures were featured in Vogue.

Braden Merrick, the ex-manager of the Killers filed suit against the band. Merrick is seeking 16 million dollars for discovering and guiding the Killers to the promised land. The lawsuit has not seen the inside of a courtroom yet.

Claudio Sanchez from Coheed & Cambria busted his hand while sparring with his brother Matthew (who is a boxer). Sanchez had to wear a cast for 3 weeks and also needed to see a physical therapist regularly.

In October, Sanchez released a solo cd under the name Prizefighter Inferno.

In November, Sanchez kicked out 2 of the members of Coheed & Cambria--bassist Mic Todd and drummer Josh Eppard were given the smackdown due to creative differences and lack of desire to go on tour.

Brand New will launch a U.S. tour in March. The band will be at the Royal Oak Music Theater on March 17th. A new Nine Inch Nails cd is in the works. Trent Reznor recently posted on his website that the band recorded 15 new songs and will mix the new material in January. He also says that the songs are all new--there are no leftovers from the With Teeth sessions. He went on to say that the new material is "highly conceptual" and "quite noisy." There is no official release date for the cd yet.

In more NIN news, the band will release a live dvd titled NIN Live: Beside You In Time. The dvd will drop on February 27th.

The Stooges will return with a new record in 2007. The Weirdness will drop in stores on March 20th.

Here's the press release with much more info:

Reunion albums are one thing. A Stooges reunion album is something else entirely.

On March 20, 2007, the band that predated punk and helped make rock and roll dangerous will release their first studio album since 1973’s seminal Raw Power. The Weirdness will feature three of the four original bandmembers – singer Iggy Pop, guitarist Ron Asheton and drummer Scott Asheton -- along with ex-Minutemen and fIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt and original Stooges sax player, Steve Mackay.

The Stooges wrote over 30 songs for the record at a cottage in Florida early this year, then rehearsed in Ann Arbor, Michigan before they entered the Chicago studio of esteemed producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies) in early October. The album is being mastered in the UK at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Tracks on the album include: "Trollin'," "Greedy Awful People," "Claustrophobia," "Mexican Guy," "I'm Fried," "ATM," "O Solo Mio," "She Took My Money" and "End Of Christianity."

Iggy decided to reform The Stooges in 2003 while he was working on his solo album Skull Ring. He called the Ashetons, who still had the same phone number he had last called them on 25 years ago. The brothers agreed to contribute to four songs on the disc and the reunion seeds were planted. Then on April 27, the full band (with Watt on bass) played its first show together in 30 years to a spellbound audience at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Coachella, California.A triumphant reunion tour followed, and in 2005 The Stooges were nominated to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They didn’t win, but were recently nominated again for induction at the upcoming ceremony to be held in early 2007.

If any rock band deserved Hall of Fame kudos it’s The Stooges, one of the most influential, powerful and explosive outfits ever to plug in a guitar. Formed in Ann Arbor in 1967, the Stooges were a forceful poke in the eye of commercial rock. Volatile and incendiary, the band wrote grimy psychedelic blues songs that grooved, droned and stomped in equal measure. Onstage, Iggy was commanding and menacing, cutting himself with glass, smearing his body with peanut butter and baiting the crowd out of its complacency.

The group’s volcanic energy earned it a record deal in 1968 and a year later, the Stooges released their self-titled debut, which featured the proto-punk classics “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “No Fun” and “1969.” In 1970, they followed with the heavier, more confrontational Fun House, which many consider the band’s finest hour. Three years would pass between Fun House and Raw Power, a primal, powerful slab of gyrating clamor from a band on the verge of physical and psychological collapse.By the end of 1973, the Stooges had broken up. In the decades that followed, Iggy established himself as a successful solo artist, releasing 15 studio albums between 1977 and 2003. Meanwhile, Scott Asheton played in Scot’s Pirates, Sonny Vincent’s Rat Race Choir and Rock Action and Ron Asheton rocked with Destroy All Monsters, the New Race, the Empty Set and Dark Carnival. In 1998, Ron joined forces with Watt and members of Mudhoney and Sonic Youth in the one-off supergroup Wylde Ratttz, an experience that paved the way for Watt to join The Stooges.

One of the most eagerly anticipated albums of 2007, The Weirdness is destined to be as inspiring, unpredictable and undeniable as the three records that preceded it over three decades ago. The release of the album will be followed by a full world tour that will clearly display the energy, vitality and freshness of one of rock and roll’s greatest success stories. In other words, the legacy continues…

Blender magazine recently published their list of "the 50 worst artists in music history" and if you're wondering, Creed did make the list! They didn't top the list though. Number one on the hitlist???? Why, Detroit's own Insane Clown Posse! Scroll down to read why they ranked number one.

They sound even stupider than they look Two trailer-trash types who wear face paint, pretend to be a street gang and drench cult devotees in cheap soda called Faygo, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope are more notorious for their beef with Eminem (who pistol-whipped an ICP homey in 2001) than their ham-fisted rap-rock music. They claim that a “dark carnival” visited them one night, prophesied impending apocalypse and made them its messengers. Between this circus gospel, they find plenty of time to rap about 40-ouncers and venereal disease.

Fall Out Boy is getting ready to come to town for the 89x Nutcracker. Don't miss FOB December 13th at the State Theater.

The band's new cd, Infinity On High, will be released February 6th. You've already heard the first single, "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" on 89x. Pete Wentz is proud of the anthemic single as well as the entire record, but he says it won't change the world. Wentz told AOL Music, "everyone wants to write music that cures cancer. I want to write songs that are like scars, where it's like you don't really need a scar 'cause you can just wear a jacket but it looks pretty (effing) good and it does feel all right sometimes."
Now that you can't get enough of My Chemical Romance, wouldn't it be wonderful to enjoy their debut cd with extra trimmings? I know. Well, your prayers have been answered. On December 12th, the debut cd from MCR, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, will be reissued. It'll contain some previously unreleased videos too. See, sometimes life goes your way.
The Taste of Chaos tour will kick off February 15th. You'd better believe they will be making a stop in the Detroit area. 30 Seconds to Mars, the Used, Senses Fail and more will be at Cobo on March 31st. Keep it on 89x for further ticket information.
Check out the new single from Finger Eleven here. The song is called "Paralyzer" and can be found on the band's forthcoming cd, Them vs. You vs. Us. The new cd drops on March 13th.

Here's another concert review by Rok Madison:

Rock reviews by Rok Madison
Plus 44 (+44)
St. Andrews Hall

So it’s the biggest bar night of 2006. There are a ton of options as to what to do. But if you were like me, and the 799 other people that decided to see Plus 44 at St. Andrews Hall you were probably happy for two reasons:

1. You got to see a huge band at one of the smallest venues imaginable.

2. You were smart and knew that you could see the show and go out to have your fun that night afterwards.

The Matches opened the show with a very high-energy performance. The fun concluded with the singer jumping on top of the large speakers on the side of stage and nearly falling to his possible death on multiple occasions. They did a first-class job of opening up and getting the crowd pumped for Plus 44.

Being that Plus 44 only have one album out it was no surprise that they only played about a one hour set. All I have to say about their performance is have you ever seen Travis Barker live? Now imagine him playing with only one arm! Now imagine him playing with one arm AND SMOKING A CIGARETTE!!! That dude is sick…

The show was really excellent. The songs sounded great for being done live and Mark brought back memories of Blink with his childish and immature comments in between songs. I think everyone at the show left feeling great because they knew that they were all part of something special that night.

The show was special not only because of the fact you will probably never see Mark and Travis from blink-182 in such an intimate setting again, but also because it was 89X’s 15 Minutes of Fame show. Krissy Ruff, a local girl from Livonia, got to present the show with her name all over the airwaves, in the paper, on concert posters, and even on every single ticket. She donated net proceeds from the show to charity and greeted the concertgoers on their way into the venue. So there was much more going than just good music that night.

Rock reviews by Rok Madison
Panic! At the Disco
Palace of Auburn Hills

Whether you love the music of Panic! At the Disco or you hate it, there is no denying that they know how to put on one hell of a show. Beginning with the two opening acts, Plain White T’s (who replaced Bloc Party since their drummer had a collapsed lung), then Jack’s Mannequin (Andrew from Something Corporate new project), and finally ending with a stage setup that was reminiscent of a cabaret combined with a carnival sideshow on crack! The fans got their money's worth that night.

The Palace is quite a huge venue and most would doubt that Panic! would be able to entertain and keep everyone in the venues attention, yet they did just that. They flew through all the songs off their album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out and even through a cover of Queen’s “Killer Queen”. I know all you Guitar Hero aficionados were secretly playing air guitar along to the song. But along with the music there were also stilt walkers, smoking ballerinas (literally), contortionists, and other freakish finds that the band brought along with them. For the entire show there was always something going on for you to keep your eye on.

Even if you're not a fan of the band and are forced to go with your 14 year old sibling or significant other… fear not. I’m sure whatever venue Panic! would be performing in they will make it a show that you would not want to miss.

David Gahan is all bummed out that people in the U.K. just don't give Depeche Mode any props.

He tells The Sun, “I don’t get it. We’re a band that has come out of England, lasted and done well. But no one seems to notice and it does hurt.

“It’s a struggle here to get recognition for what we’ve achieved. We’re that oddball band that people don’t know how to categorise. We don’t fit the rock category and are not pop.”
Crowded House will release a cd/dvd early next year. Farewell to the World captures the band's farewell show from 1996. The cd and dvd will be sold separately.

In related news, Neil Finn from Crowded House has been busy working on a solo cd. His ex-bandmate, Nick Seymour, is playing bass on the new cd. Finn says that Paul Hester's (Crowded House drummer) suicide in 2005 brought them closer together. Finn says the new cd is coming along quite well and everything feels "natural and right." No release date has been set yet, but it is expected out in the first half of 2007. Read more here.
Maynard James Keenan recently did an interview with IGN online. They discussed Keenan's new musical project Puscifer, as well as his interest in winemaking and stand up comedy. He explained that he already had an interest in winemaking before finding out it was part of his heritage:

IGN: Winemaking is one of your new projects. Was this something you've always been interested in or a more recent discovery?

Keenan: It turns out that my family made wine in Northern Italy. I had no idea until a relative of mine who I rarely see told me. It's in my blood. I'd already put vines in the ground before I knew this.

One of the original members of Duran Duran is out of the band. Here's the official statement from Duran Duran regarding Andy Taylor's exit:

A Message to our Fans

To Our Fans

We know that there has been a tremendous amount of speculation over the past few weeks regarding Andy Taylor's continued involvement with the band and we are sorry that we've been unable to provide you with more information until now.

The past five years have been an incredible journey for us all - and having the original five back together was something that we had wanted to see happen for some time. As of last weekend, however, the four of us have dissolved our partnership and will be continuing as Duran Duran without Andy, as we have reached a point in our relationship with him where there is an unworkable gulf between us and we can no longer effectively function together.

Although obviously disappointed and saddened about this, we are excited about the next chapter of the Duran Duran story and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Tenacious D Announce a Date for Destiny

Platinum-Selling Duo Jack Black and Kyle Gass Return on November 14th With Highly Anticipated New Album The Pick of Destiny
Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny in Theaters November 17th

NEW YORK, Sept. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Epic Records has announced a November 14th release date for The Pick of Destiny, the highly anticipated soundtrack to the upcoming New Line Cinema comedy, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. The movie, an epic musical adventure that follows Tenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass) on their quest to obtain the Pick and become The Greatest Band on Earth, arrives in theaters on November 17th.

The album, produced by the Dust Brothers' John King (Beck) and mixed by Ken Andrews (Pete Yorn, A Perfect Circle) and featuring guest appearances by Dave Grohl (drums), John Spiker (bass) and John Konesky (guitar), spotlights fifteen Tenacious D songs and dialogue highlights from the movie. Among the record's many standout tracks are "Classico," fan favorite "History," and "Kickapoo," a song written specifically for the film and guest-starring Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Meatloaf and legendary metal singer Ronnie James Dio.

The latter appears in the film's opening scene, in which a ten-year old Black (played by Troy Gentile) serenades his ultra-conservative, very religious family with a rocking rendition of "Kickapoo," a song whose lyrics would make a sailor blush. When his father (Meat Loaf), who believes rock and roll is the devil's work, unleashes his belt and shows him no mercy, tearing down all of his beloved rock posters, the young Jack Black implores Dio, one of his rock gods, for guidance. Dio reassures him that he is on the right path but must leave his stifling home environment and go to Hollywood to "find the secrets of his art."

The album is led by first single "POD" and its companion video, which is currently in heavy rotation/Big 10 on MTV. The clip was directed by Liam Lynch (Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic), who also directed the film and shared writing credits with Black and Gass.

The Pick of Destiny will be available in a special limited-edition deluxe version offering fans the full album as well as special tarot cards, and their very own guitar pick of destiny, all packaged in a slipcase designed to look like an ancient tome.

The full track listing for The Pick of Destiny is as follows:

"Papagenu (He's My Sassafrass)
"Dude (I Totally Miss You)"
