Gary Numan released the four song ep, I Am Dust, featuring the original version of the title track (taken from Numan's full album Splinter: Songs From A Broken Mind), a demo version, and two remixes. This week Numan unveiled the official video for "I Am Dust" which was directed by Chris Corner of IAMX. Corner had the following to say about working with Numan:

"When I saw Gary in Los Angeles performing "I Am Dust," I knew I had to try to capture his immense stage presence and energy in the video, and to combine it with the raw, abstract visual world that it evokes in my head. Primal, subconscious, mystical, wild. We asked Gary to do some strange things. He did them without question. A testament to his trust and professionalism."

Take a look at the video for "I Am Dust" below:

Echo & the Bunnymen return to North America in August in support of the newly released album Meteorites. Several shows on the tour -- including the Detroit stop at St. Andrew's Hall on August 11th -- have sold out, however fans worldwide will still have an opportunity to see the legendary band live. Yahoo announced that Echo & the Bunnymen's show at the Showbox in Seattle will stream live on Yahoo Live on August 6th. The stream kicks off at 11:30 pm ET (8:30 pm PT) and details are available here.

UPDATE: THE TIME OF THE LIVE STREAM HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK 90 MINUTES AND WILL NOW BEGIN AT 12:45 AM ET  (INSTEAD OF 11:30 PM).

Also: it appears Yahoo replays the concert the following day (continuously loops the concert archive the day after it airs up until ~ 1 hour before the next live streaming event), so if you can't stay up for the live broadcast on August 6th, head over to Yahoo during the day on August 7th to check out the re-run.

A newly synched concert video featuring the Cocteau Twins on 1990's Heaven Or Las Vegas tour has appeared on You Tube. The footage was captured in London on the January 11th stop of the tour, however the audio was replaced with soundboard recording from the Detroit date, which took place later that year, November 25th at the Latin Quarter. From the video uploader CocteauBuff:

"I've remastered the original Cocteau Twins London video and synched it to the superior remastered soundboard recording of the same show in Detroit. I was able to improve the video quality considerably and provide more depth to the colors. Fortunately, the video was shot well, by someone who knew the songs. Synching was possible because the Twins used backing tracks that played in perfect time. So enjoy, this is the closest thing we have to a live CT video."

Enjoy.

Outward, aka Corey Philpot is a unique one-man musical project out of London, Kentucky creating a elegant blend of synth/electronic, shoegaze, and alternative. Philpot has been composing and producing music from a young age, utilizing soundscapes to explore abstract questions such as:

"What does the sound of the soul feeling its eternity of nothing and everything sound like? What would a thought sound like if it could be heard by others? What would death sound like?"

Outward certainly composed some breathtaking answers to these questions and more in last year's 4 song EP, The King's Ascension which deservedly captured the attention of Ox-4-Sound, the studio and production company founded by Ride's Mark Gardener. Come this fall a full length album from Outward titled Reverie Remedy will be released (date TBA). For now, stream The King's Ascension EP in full here, plus enjoy a few other tracks (two not featured on the EP) below. For more on Outward, visit the official website, Facebook, and Twitter.

Johnny Marr returns with his new solo album Playland on October 6th. Marr reveals he began working on the new batch of songs immediately after his tour cycle from the Messenger was over:

"When The Messenger came out I kept on writing. I liked that the band had a momentum going on tour and a connection with the audience, and I thought that energy would be good to capture on the new record."

The first single from Playland, "Easy Money" will debut shortly.  In the meantime, fans can pre-order the album now through iTunes and Amazon. The tracklisting for Playland is available to view below:

Back In The Box
Easy Money
Dynamo
Candidate
25 Hours
The Trap
Playland
Speak Out Reach Out
Boys Get Straight
This Tension
Little King

FYI, Marr says the album title was inspired by a book written in 1938 by Dutch historian Johan Huizinga which examines the importance of play element in culture and society.

Stream a short documentary about the decline of sound quality in the age of compressed music, mp3s, and shitty computer speakers. The Distortion of Sound features several musicians, producers, and sound engineers lamenting about how they meticulously obsess over creating high quality music, only to have listeners "enjoy" the finished product on sub-standard equipment and/or use low quality sources (mp3s, You Tube, streaming services, etc).

Though some believe this film is only for snobby audiophiles, I choose to differ. Fans who stream music, tape recordings off You Tube, or purchase mp3s should at least get an idea of a musician's stance. Besides, the film illustrates the difference (with samples) of compressed vs non-compressed music.

Warning: there's a LOT of Linkin Park in the film, especially the first half, but regardless if you love or hate the band, the film is still educational. The Distortion of Sound also features Snoop Dogg, Quincy Jones, Slash, Hans Zimmer, Steve Aoki, and more.

Very bad news indeed: Only a few weeks after the release of its new album, German darkwave/post-punk/psych band Blue Angel Lounge has decided to pack it in and call it a day. The band posted the following announcement on Facebook:

"For many reasons internal and external, we have come to the conclusion to go on separate ways, new projects and discover what we we’ve been missing while working ambitiously on this project for almost a decade.

The Blue Angel Lounge has always been a project above a conceptual band, rather a musical community of friends and people in our close environment that eventually led us to an almost predictable but unfortunately abrupt end.

We would like to thank all of our fans and admirers for all the incredibly great support and for all the unforgettable moments we will never forget.

Last but not least. We would like to apologize to all the people that were involved at Paris Psych Fest and all the fans who wanted to see us play. We are deeply sorry but we could not find a way to get everybody together for one last time to give it the proper ending it definitely deserved.

We hope the music we have managed to achieve will outlast our short existence."

R.I.P. Blue Angel Lounge.

Blue Angel Lounge was unknown in mainstream music circles, however the band was loved and respected by bands such as Interpol, Dandy Warhols, A Place to Bury Strangers, and most notably, Brian Jonestown Massacre. [The band's swan song, Sea of Trees, was released a few weeks ago through A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's record label.] The band's biggest influence was Nico and the Velvet Underground: Blue Angel Lounge was named for the New York City club which hosted Nico's first American performance, and leader Nils Ottensmeyer's vocal style has often been compared to that of a male Nico.

Sea of Trees, the new and final album, compiles a few previously released singles ("Walls") along with brand new material, including the haunting single "Desolate Sands." Take a look at the videos for "Desolate Sands" and "Walls" below, and grab Sea of Trees on CD, vinyl, or as a digital album download (links to purchase: iTunes, Amazon).

The tentative Yahoo Live In Concert schedule through mid-August is posted below, though please note the schedule is subject to change and the artists for some dates are yet to be announced. *I have no idea whether the Buggles were asked to reunite for this project, but it would have been fitting. Interestingly enough, a Buggles reunion isn't out of the question. Geoff Downes (who went on to play in Asia & Yes) was asked about the possibility of a reunion during a fan Q & A last year and he said this about ex-bandmate Trevor Horn:

"Well you never know! Trevor’s a really busy guy most of the time with his wide variety of projects and productions, but I don’t think we’d ever discount the possibility. It’s always a challenge working on new stuff, and I’d love to collaborate with Trevor again. As you know, I’m pretty busy myself right now working on new material with both Yes and Asia, as well as several other projects. So yeah, it’s not impossibility, just a matter of making the planets align so that one day we can hopefully make it happen."

KMFDM leader En Esch launched a crowdfunding campaign through Pledge Music to fund his forthcoming solo record. Esch describes his new music as "fresh, heavy electronic and guitar driven material" and reveals ex-KMFDM/Slick Idiot guitarist Guenter Schulz guests on the record. The campaign was launched in hopes of raising money to help offset recording/production costs as well as travel expenses and visa application fees for his live band. Additionally, Esch promises to donate 10 percent of funds raised (after reaching his pledge goal) to animal protection organizations in Berlin.

Check out campaign incentives (including a lifetime guest list/access pass!) and pledge here.

By the way, Esch hasn't decided on the album title, but over the next few days he'll post a couple of different titles to see what fans think.

Radiohead is at least starting to work on its new record in September according to guitarist Jonny Greenwood. Greenwood was interviewed by BBC Radio 6's Stuart Maconie about some of his other orchestral projects, but the host couldn't resist asking Greenwood about what was going on with Radiohead. Greenwood told Maconie that Radiohead will start "playing, rehearsing, recording" in September and will "see how it's sounding." BBC host Mary Anne Hobbs aired a snippet of the interview today (listen here around the 1:20:00 mark), and the full interview with Greenwood premieres July 20th.

Drummer, songwriter, producer, and rock hero Tommy Ramone has died.  Ramone had been in hospice and died last night from bile duct cancer.  He was 65 years old.  The Ramones' official Facebook page announced the sad news last night:

"We are saddened to announce the passing of Tommy Ramone (nee Erdelyi), the original drummer for the Ramones, earlier today, 11 July 2014.

"It wasn't just music in The Ramones: it was an idea. It was bringing back a whole feel that was missing in rock music – it was a whole push outwards to say something new and different. Originally it was just an artistic type of thing; finally I felt it was something that was good enough for everybody." - Tommy Ramone, 1978"

The Ramones' Facebook page confirmed Tommy was 65 years old (born January 29th, 1949). Several news reports have erroneously been reporting his age as 62.

Tommy Ramone was the last living original member of the Ramones: Joey Ramone died in 2001, bassist Dee Dee Ramone in 2002, and guitarist Johnny Ramone in 2004.

Veruca Salt's original lineup reunited last year and in the spring they released a 10" single -- their first new material in 16 years. They aren't stopping there -- according to Nina Gordon and Louise Post, a new full length album is in the works. The pair told City Pages that they just finished tracking the album and will likely release it this fall. Gordon and Post also talked at length about how things are going post-reunion, and from the sounds of it, their relationship couldn't be better:

"We've also been co-writing now and it's been really fun. It's something that we didn't do before. Now we're literally throwing ideas back and forth at one another and working together. For some reason that seemed too threatening when we were working together originally.

I think it's because we were trying too hard to figure out who we were as songwriters independent of one another. We were in our 20s and thought we had to be really precious about our lyrics and the song structure as we were finding ourselves. Now we feel confident in our songs and in each other's talents and abilities."

Veruca Salt is currently touring the U.S. and for the most part seem to be preaching to the converted according to Nina Gordon:

...these shows that we've played (only 5 so far) have really been mostly über-fan shows, you know what I mean? They're small clubs and the people that are coming are people that either were too young to see us when were playing back then or people who did and have just been waiting and hoping that we would reunite."

French electronic duo Telepopmusik teamed up with Ride's Mark Gardener for a collaborative track titled "Sound." The digital single was released this week on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play, plus the video for the track is available to view below.

The video features Japanese visual artist Pyuupiru, who portrays a "snow monster queen that lives in the heart of the main character of the film Monster Club." The end is kind of creepy, fyi.

A full length album from Telepopmusik will be released in the fall. Mark Gardener is expected to release his collaborative album with Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie later this year.

Bernard Sumner's highly anticipated autobiography will be released in September 25th in the U.K. Chapter and Verse [New Order, Joy Division and me] details Sumner's extraordinary life as a member of seminal band Joy Division and frontman of New Order. From the official listing:

"Chapter and Verse includes a vivid and illuminating account of Bernard's Salford childhood, the early days of Joy Division, the band's enormous critical and popular success, and the subsequent tragic death of Ian Curtis. Bernard describes the formation of New Order, takes us behind the scenes at the birth of classics such as 'Blue Monday' and gives his first-hand account of the ecstasy and the agony of the Haçienda days.

Sometimes moving, often hilarious and occasionally completely out of control, this is a tale populated by some of the most colourful and creative characters in music history, such as Ian Curtis, Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton and Martin Hannett. Others have told parts of the story, in film and book form. Now, for the first time, Bernard Sumner gives you chapter and verse."

Pre-order Chapter and Verse from Random House or Amazon UK. A North American release has not yet been announced.

Meanwhile New Order kicks off its mini-tour of North America with a sold out show at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom tonight.
