Front Line Assembly return with a new electronic album titled Echogenetic on July 9th. The first taste of the album comes by way of the track "Prototype," which the band unleashed earlier today. Take a listen:

UPDATE 5/31 @ 11:30 pm: Apparently Front Line Assembly & Metropolis Records pulled the track (it was their official upload/preview, not a leak), but will upload a new version shortly

UPDATE 6/7 @ 9:20 am: Metropolis Records has posted a short preview of "Prototype" - check it out below:

Echogenetic is available to pre-order through Amazon and Metropolis.
The Stone Roses' concert film The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone premiered in the U.K. yesterday. The Stone Roses (minus Reni, who according to Ian Brown had "a bad cold") and director Shane Meadows attended the Manchester screening and took part in a Q & A session afterwards which was broadcast to all participating theaters in the U.K. The BBC interviewed the Stone Roses on the red carpet prior to the event, and video of that and an additional interview can be viewed below:

Reviews of The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone are posted here, here, and here. Made Of Stone lands on DVD in the U.K. on June 5th. So far a North American release date has not been announced.

Video of David Bowie's 1975 appearance on Dinah! has surfaced on You Tube. The episode featured Bowie's live performance of "Stay," followed by an interview with Dinah Shore, who was later joined by the Fonz (Henry Winkler) and Nancy Walker! Near the end of the bizarrely awesome episode, Bowie even learned some karate moves from an instructor. Watch the zaniness (complete with cigarette smoking) below:

Another vintage video of Bowie performing "Fame" on Soul Train is posted here.

Legendary designer Peter Saville was interviewed recently by The Talks and discussed graphic design, pop culture, and hooking up with Factory Records. During the interview Saville talked about how he was on his own when it came to designing the album sleeves/covers for Joy Division and New Order.  Initially Stephen Morris gave him the idea for the Unknown Pleasures cover, but for subsequent records (Joy Division's Closer, then the New Order singles & albums), he was given the freedom to do what he chose:

"...the covers were about what I wanted to do, which was in some kind of weird, subconscious way about me and where I was going. New Order didn’t approve it, they rarely saw it...it was always, “Where is it? It’s late, it should have been done weeks ago, just get it to the fucking printer.” More often than not, New Order would get to see the covers when they were in the stores. And sometimes they liked them and sometimes they didn’t."

Read the full interview with Peter Saville over at the Talk. A few other video interviews with Saville are posted below:

Meanwhile, Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures cover art was recently printed in 3D and it's fascinating to look at.
Morrissey was rumored to be in attendance at last night's Scott Weiland show in Los Angeles. So far there doesn't appear to be photographic proof other than this placecard, however according to Twitter and a brief mention in a review on Grunge Report, the legend was in the house.

Perhaps Moz showed up to see whether Weiland would perform a "Reel Around The Fountain" cover?

Visage return with a new album Hearts & Knives on June 11th. In 2010 visionary Steve Smith reunited with Steve Barnacle and the two began writing songs for a new album. According to the band, the sound of the new material is "classic Visage" with updated/modern production values. From the official press release:

The sound of Hearts and Knives is “classic Visage” but with modern songs and style. There is the odd tip of the hat to modern production values but the sound is 1980-1982 Visage. It's Vintage keyboards and synthesizers all the way. There's not software synths on this record! The production by John Bryan and analogue synthesizer collector Sare Havlicek is firmly rooted in the '80s. Many of the tracks are instantly recognizable as Visage (Moogs and the obligatory CR78 drum sound feature on several).

To get a taste of Hearts & Knives, stream the new track "Shameless Fashion" below, and download it for free in exchange for a "like" on the official Visage Facebook Page.

In the 90s, MTV broadcast a concert series, Live in the 10 Spot. In October, 1997, the Rolling Stones were scheduled for one of their shows to be broadcast on the program, but ended up canceling their performance at the last minute. MTV was left without a concert until the legendary David Bowie swooped in to save the day. Watch Bowie's Live at the 10 Spot concert, which was recorded at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York on October 14, 1997 while in support of Earthling. Note: the performance includes the awesome Reeves Gabrels, who was part of Bowie's band during this era.

Back in March, the Go-Go's parted ways with original bassist Kathy Valentine, and now Valentine is suing her ex-bandmates. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Valentine is entitled to 20 percent share of the band's revenues as a partner of Ladyhead LLC and Smith-Pocket Industries, Inc. – the entities authorized to conduct the group’s business. The suit claims that the Go Go's formed a new business corporation - GoGoCorp - which cuts Valentine's share to 2 percent. Valentine calls the move a scheme which deprives her of at least 1 million dollars. Read the court documents here.

Gary Numan appeared on the BBC Radio 6 program Radcliffe & Maconie on May 26th to discuss his forthcoming album Splinter. According to Numan, the album was completed last week and is a mix of anthems and ethereal sounds, though many of the tracks have an industrial feel to them.  Numan, whose music has influenced countless industrial acts over the years, told the BBC hosts that it felt natural and like coming home to record industrial sounds for the album. Take a listen to the new track "I Am Dust," which Numan premiered during the BBC interview:

Numan's forthcoming album Splinter is scheduled for worldwide release on October 14th. A new interview with Johnny Marr was published in today's Independent. You can't help but feel bad for Marr...he's released an excellent new album The Messenger, and he's trying to focus on the future, but of course the question on many minds (both fans and interviewers') seem to be 'well, is a Smiths' reunion ever going to happen?'  This time around, The Independent grilled Marr about the possibility of a Smiths' reunion in the future, and a frustrated Marr made the following comments:

"It's impossible for that group to re-form. That's it. That's my answer."

The interviewer pressed on and asked if Marr and Morrissey were in contact, which led to this:

"You're just interested in asking the question, and really you shouldn't be. Because who cares about some emails that we send to each other every few years, that aren't particularly in-depth. I mean, is that interesting for people to read about? I don't think it is really. It's not as interesting as my new songs, and why some songs are called what they are. If you want to know about me and Morrissey, just Google it...

"...There have been emails. Just emails. That's it. That's all I can say"

And that was that. The whole interview with Marr is a great read, so head over to the Independent to check it out (via Roberto Ferdenzi).

By the way, Morrissey made comments about the Smiths, reunions, and rumors during his Mexico City interview in March.  Listen to his comments below, or read the transcript below.

"Well, they persist ALL the time every day, every year, yes, constantly and I, I constantly have requests to reform. But people forget that I did not break up the Smiths, so I don't know why people ask me about reformations, but I would always say no because we're all very different people now, and it's been a very long time, and the truth is, we don't know each other, we're not friends, so why would you be in a band with people who you don't really know? We're linked because of the distant past, but we have no links in our lives now. So it doesn't really make any sense to me. Also, I'm very, very happy with my life, with my musical life as it is now, so I don't feel any to, for, a musical reformation. I don't see the point. If I'm so happy singing now, why would I want to play with strangers?"

"Because when you, when you first form a band you have a certain attitude, the world isn't listening to you, and you want to make it listen to you. But if you're in a situation where everybody's waiting it's not the same thing. And it can never be the same thing. And you're not the same person. But people, people have, it fixed in their mind, when they listen to music and when they listen to older music, that the person who made that music is still the same person. But they're not. And if you meet many people, like, David Bowie, etc, etc, and you talk to him about the past, he doesn't really know. Because he's not that person anymore. He's not there and he doesn't feel all those things anymore, and he's quite rightly, living in the now. But the listener, the person who listens to the music always thinks, that the person is still the same, and it's not true."

The full Moz interview/transcript is posted here.

Julian Cope is back with a new album titled Revolutionary Suicide. The two disc set features new songs, new poems, and new concepts according to Cope's site:

"Weep along with the dreadful beauty of the Archdrude’s most epic ever song ‘The Armenian Genocide’, sway with the bucolic agricultural rhythms and devotional lyrics of ‘Hymn to the Odin’, pump your fists in the air to the Detroit soul of the title-track, or just give yourself entirely to the divine-but-gaping 70-minute-long musical maw, nay, the Hot Mess that is REVOLUTIONARY SUICIDE. New poems? You got it! New concepts? You got it! We got the Mayans’ predictions out the way and we’re all still here. So maybe everything that went before 2013 was just a dry-run for what’s to come. Perhaps you’ll even believe that once you’ve heard the enormous scope and vision of REVOLUTIONARY SUICIDE."

Revolutionary Suicide is available now in the U.K. from Heritage Head, but fans interested in purchasing from other etailers will have to wait until at least June 17th. Check out the tracklisting for Revolutionary Suicide below:

Disc 1

01. Hymn To The Odin
02. Why Did The Chicken Cross My Mind?
03. The Armenian Genocide

03. Mexican Revolution Blues
04. Russian Revolution Blues

Nitzer Ebb's first recording, Basic Pain Procedure, is celebrating its 30th anniversary and will be reissued worldwide in June. The original version of the recording was a cassette-only release and was designed mostly for label interest, though fans were able to purchase it directly from the band at shows.  Nitzer Ebb went on to record a whole new batch of songs for their debut album That Total Age, and with the exception of "The Home," which was reworked/retitled for Belief, the songs from Basic Pain Procedure were never reused or re-recorded.  Last year Pylon released a remastered version of Basic Pain Procedure on vinyl, and now for the 30th anniversary the label is releasing it on CD and adding a live concert recording taken from a December 1983 U.K. gig.   Basic Pain Procedure will be released worldwide on June 11th, though Amazon has a June 28th listing.

Nitzer Ebb uploaded a few tracks from the live album onto soundcloud and they are available to stream below. For more on the reissue, visit the official Nitzer Ebb website or Facebook page.

In 2012, Swervedriver reunited for a late night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel and a handful of live shows.  At the time things were looking up for Swervie fans, especially after the band debuted a new track, "Deep Wound," on Kimmel.  The band indicated in interviews that other new music was in the works (in April 2012 leader Adam Franklin disclosed they were planning to do some new music, but didn't have firm plans for a record or release.  In a separate April 2012 interview the possibility of new music was discussed with Glasgowest and Franklin again said they were working on new stuff but that they'll "see how that goes.")  Not too surprisingly, nothing new has surfaced from Swervedriver.

While we may or may not hear new music from Swervedriver in the future, some new music from Franklin is indeed on the way, and soon.  Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody has three full length releases under its belt, and a fourth one is coming this summer.  On July 16th Black Horses, the follow up to the 2010's album,  I Could Sleep For A Thousand Years, will be released. Pre-order now through iTunes. A listing for Amazon and Goodnight Records will be available soon. Check out the tracklisting and cover art for the album is posted below.

Peter Murphy is currently on tour celebrating the 35th anniversary of Bauhaus. So far he's stuck to his promise of playing only Bauhaus material with the exception of his encores which have included a few different covers. At the May 10th stop in Toronto, Murphy's encore included a cover of Joy Division's "Transmission." Before playing the song, Murphy made a few comments about Joy Division, which ended with "God rest Ian's soul," then he launched into the song. Check out video from the performance below:

The first video is shorter - cuts off the end - but is better video.  The second includes Murphy's comments and full song, but not as up close.

Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of the Smiths - the band released their debut single, "Hand In Glove," on May 13, 1983. To mark the milestone, over the weekend the BBC aired a 30 minute special titled The Smiths: Not Like Any Other Love. The program features performance clips and interviews with the band, plus commentary from musicians, artists, designers, poets and more (Noel Gallagher provides some entertaining moments).  Watch the program below, courtesy of HipsterDisco

Meanwhile, a 2008 documentary examining the Smiths' 1986 album The Queen Is Dead has surfaced (in part) on You Tube.

A portion of the two-hour doc has appeared online and can be viewed below. A few copies of the DVD are available to purchase through Amazon (note DVD specs before purchasing).

Last year while Iggy Pop was in Europe promoting his French covers album Apres, he sat down for an interview with Jean Boué. Iggy & the Stooges released a new album, Ready To Die, a few weeks ago and is available from iTunes, Amazon, or your favorite record store.

Meanwhile, The Ron Asheton Tribute Concert that took place April 19th, 2011 at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor will be released on DVD on June 4th. The Smiths' debut single, "Hand In Glove" was released on this day in 1983! The single was the public's first taste of the band that would go on to be one of the most influential bands of all time.

One night in January 1983 Johnny Marr wrote the riff and knew immediately he had something great, and he couldn't wait to get the music to Morrissey. He revealed to the Daily Mail that he didn't have anything to record the riff on, so he had to play it over and over in the car on the way to get his creation to Moz. Morrissey wrote the lyrics that night and the song came together the next day.

Eventually the Smiths recorded a demo for "Hand In Glove."  In the Daily Mail interview Marr talked about how he stopped by the Rough Trade offices to drop off the demo and have an in person discussion with label boss Geoff Travis, but he was turned away. Determined to have the song heard, he hung around outside and snuck back into the building by pretending he worked there:

'I found my way to Geoff’s office. He looked really busy. I hung around until he was on his own...I just grabbed him and said, “Hey Geoff, uh, hi, my name’s Johnny. I’m in a band from Manchester and you won’t have heard anything like this…”

Three days later, the Smiths found out that Rough Trade was interested in releasing "Hand In Glove" as a single. And the rest is history.  Read the full interview with Marr about the making of "Hand In Glove" here.

The version of "Hand In Glove" found on the 7" single is slightly different from the version that would eventually be released on the band's full length debut album the Smiths in 1984.  [The 7" version found renewed light of day on the Smiths' compilation album Hatful of Hollow.]  A live version of "Handsome Devil" was the b-side to the "Hand In Glove" single.

One of my favorite newish acts is back with a brand new single today! Edinburgh five piece The Machine Room wowed critics in 2012 with their shimmery indie pop on the four-song Love From A Distance ep. Today they return with the swoon-worthy single, "Sweden" which is released as part of Fandango's '12 singles' series. [London's Club Fandango is turned 12 years old in April, and to celebrate, they're releasing 12 singles - one at a time for 12 consecutive months - featuring some of their favorite new acts.] If you've heard The Machine Room before, it should come as no surprise that they were chosen as part of the singles series, because they really are THAT good.

Download "Sweden" now through iTunes and Amazon. U.K. peeps can also subscribe to receive all 12 singles in the series by ordering the singles subscription directly from Club Fandango.  However you do it, just do it. SERIOUSLY, IT'S LESS THAN A DOLLAR FOR THE DOWNLOAD AND IT WILL BRING YOU SO MUCH JOY.

Stream "Sweden" over at Soundcloud.

Catch up with The Machine Room on Facebook and Twitter, and if you haven't checked out the Love From A Distance ep, remedy that immediately.  Stream it over on Bandcamp, and purchase through iTunes or Amazon.

A few months ago news broke* that Creation Records kingpin Alan McGee was set to return to the music business and was preparing to launch a new record label. Yesterday McGee made it official and launched 359 Music which is a partnership with Cherry Red Records. Read McGee's statement on the partnership below:

"Recently I found myself reinvigorated by new music again after being 5 years away from music living in rural Wales, and from which there has been much talk about how I will return to music. As recently talked about in the press, my original plan was to do a deal with major label backing in Japan. But when it came down to it I realised that I didn't want to come back to music through a major music label - that's not what I want to be part of. That's when I had a chat with Iain McNay from Cherry Red and we quite quickly put our heads together and developed between us a much better deal for 359 Music which will be a joint venture with Cherry Red. The first ever person to ever approach me about music when I was 19 was Iain McNay from Cherry Red."

Creation Records was home to MANY influential bands like Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Teenage Fanclub, Boo Radleys, and Oasis, so all eyes (and ears) are focused on what new bands McGee will be signing. McGee is still looking for interesting bands to sign too (maybe someone can also give him a heads up about gmail?):

Check out 359 Music on Facebook and Twitter.

Stream an excellent interview with Alan McGee over at The Dumbing of America - McGee talks about My Bloody Valentine, Oasis, major labels and more, plus check out the trailer to Upside Down: The Creation Records Story below:

*(previous reports indicated the label was going to be named 1153 Records, but it's been changed to 359 Records).
Detroit's own ADULT. are back with the new album The Way Things Fall May 14th. Though Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus released their last album Why Bother? way back in 2007, they've been abundantly busy with other creative projects - including the completion of three films, building renovation (Hernan Bas' building in Eastern Market), and visual art/photography. Last year ADULT. headed back to the studio to record two tracks for a 12", but they felt so rejuvenated they ended up putting together a full album. The result is The Way Things Fall - stream the album in full below via Fader, and pre-order the album through iTunes, Amazon, or Ghostly.

The Breeders played Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night - the band performed "Cannonball" then returned to perform "Drivin' On 9" as a web-exclusive. Watch both performances below:
