The Pixies premiered a new track titled "Bagboy" -  the band is offering the track as a free download plus the official video is posted below.

UPDATE (6/28 @ 11:55am): It turns out that while it might sound like Kim Deal singing on the song, it isn't Kim at all.  Frank Black/Black Francis revealed on his fan forum earlier today (via DIY) that the Kim-esque vocals were sung by Jeremy Dubs:

"I agree, it does sound a bit like Kim, but it's my good friend Jeremy Dubs, one of the best people I've had the pleasure to know, both socially and professionally."

Interesting the Pixies would elect to use backing vocals that sound "a bit" like Kim Deal, especially after her departure. In any event, according to the band's publicist, there are no plans for the Pixies to release a full album (though some "insiders" are claiming a full album WAS recorded.)

Now might be a awesome time to remind you that earlier this year Kim Deal launched a solo 7" series and two singles have been released so far: "Walking With A Killer" b/w "Dirty Hessians" and "Hot Shot" b/w "Likkle More" (stream all four songs here).  The limited edition (artwork-less) version of both singles are sold out, but the non-limited edition version of "Walking With A Killer" b/w "Dirty Hessians" is available to pre-order now (ships in July). The digital versions of the singles are available through iTunes and Amazon.

The 90s shoegaze band Medicine regrouped last May to discuss reissuing some of their old material, and as it turned out, they decided to reunite and record new material.  The core trio of Beth Thompson, Brad Laner, and Jim Goodall picked up where they left off and completed an album's worth of swirling shoegaze.  To the Happy Few - the band's first output since 1995 - will be released August 6th on cd, vinyl, and as a digital download through Captured Tracks. The album is preceded by a new single, "It's Not Enough" which you can stream below along with the album track "Long As The Sun"("Long As The Sun" is available as a free download here).

Chino Moreno from Deftones has never shied away from his love of classic alternative music - last year he revealed to Noisecreep that his favorite band is Depeche Mode - and over the years, Deftones have covered several old school songs like Depeche Mode's "Sweetest Perfection" and "To Have And To Hold," not to mention the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want," and Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur." Yesterday MTV Hive published an interview with Moreno and the topic of old school alternative was briefly discussed:

"For me, heavy music is something that came later in my life. I listened to a lot of British pop and New Wave [when I was younger]. I always connected with Depeche Mode and the Smiths. Then I got into heavier music over the years."

But the real shocker in yesterday's interview wasn't about Moreno...it was about ex-Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo being a fan of the Smiths! Moreno confirmed he caught Anselmo listening to the Smiths backstage in his dressing room once, which led to Anselmo professing his love for the band:

"It was like 1996. I was like, “You listen to the Smiths?” And he was like, “Yeah, I love the Smiths!”

Read the interview with Chino Moreno over at MTV Hive.

Fans of Moreno will also be excited to know that his side project Crosses will release a full length album in October, and his brand new side project Palms released a self-titled debut album today. Check out Palms' new song "Patagonia" below along with Deftones' cover of "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want."

It's been a LONG time since we've heard new music from Kitchens of Distinction, however the band is poised to return with a brand new album later this year! Today the band announced the new album has been mastered and is pretty much finished other than one song that needs a bit of tweaking. The album includes 10 new songs and will be released "late summer" through 3 loop music. KOD further teased fans by revealing the album has a title and cover, but apparently that info is still classified.

A few weeks ago vocalist Patrick Fitzgerald revealed some other kernels of info regarding the sound of the new recording on his official site:

"Jules thinks it sounds nothing like old Kitchens, but like a new version sucked through time and space. Dan said he thought it would fit neatly between Death of Cool and Cowboys. Me? Well it certainly sounds like nothing I’ve recorded these past stephenhero years, so I’m glad as I wanted a change. It’s definitely a hark back to the sonic noise of KOD, but the lyrics are wiser, and the songs less fraught. But don’t get me wrong, they are no less intense."

Stay tuned for further updates.  In the meantime, catch up with Kitchens of Distinction on Twitter, and on Fitzgerald's official site.

On June 18th 1988, Depeche Mode played a show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to celebrate the 101st show of their Music For The Masses tour. The band partnered with Los Angeles station KROQ (who was celebrating their own 10th anniversary) and staged Concert For The Masses - a day long festival which also featured Wire, Thomas Dolby, and OMD as openers. Depeche Mode rolled taped and eventually released their set as the double live CD 101, and 101 documentary. Today Depeche Mode commemorated the 25th anniversary of Concert For The Masses by sharing an 18 minute video with interviews, performances and more from that historic event. Check it out below:

It's only taken decades, but Public Image Limited's debut album First Issue has finally been released domestically. The album was originally released in the U.K. in 1978 and was the first taste of what John Lydon was up to after the breakup of the Sex Pistols (a U.S. release was planned but then scrapped by their record label.)  The classic album has been digitally remastered and is now available as a 2CD set which adds the rare b-side "The Cowboy Song," and a 56 minute unedited 1978 BBC audio interview with Lydon. The LP version includes the material on the CDs plus comes with an archive replica fold-out poster, set of stickers, and download card. The release is also available as a digital download (for download versions, the BBC interview is 'album only' download). Purchase from Light in the Attic Records, Amazon, or iTunes.

Ministry return with its fourth live release Enjoy The Quiet - Live at Wacken 2012 in August. The recording is taken from the band's August 3, 2012 appearance at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany. The massive festival gig was the band's last stop on their tour in support of Relapse, and includes the last pro-shot footage of guitarist Mike Scaccia performing with Ministry. Enjoy The Quiet will debut at this year's Wacken Festival (August 1st - 3rd) and will be released on CD, DVD, deluxe 2CD/DVD (includes bonus CD), Blu-Ray, vinyl, and digital download on August 13th. Check out the trailer below:

The tracklisting for Enjoy The Quiet - Live At Wacken 2012 is posted at the bottom of the page.

Ministry is also releasing its final album From Beer To Eternity on September 6th, with the album's first single, "Permawar," to drop in late July (pushed back from June). Ministry began working on the album in December, just days before Mike Scaccia's death. According to Al Jourgensen, the December session was like no other session:

"We have never, in the history of Ministry, ever had a tracking session like that before...everything went so smoothly, it was surreal. And Mikey was so on fire and inspired, and really a driving force for this record."

Months later, Jourgensen decided to finish up the album, and though it was a bittersweet experience, he says he's proud of the result:

"I'm super proud of From Beer to Eternity because it's my tribute to Mikey's incredible talent, and I feel it honors him and all of the years we spent together making music.”

Read more about From Beer To Eternity here.

Finally, don't forget about the book that will most likely be the best read of 2013: Al Jourgensen's autobiography, The Lost Gospels According To Al Jourgensen, is due to be published on July 9th. Read more about the book here.

The Dead Milkmen played a show in St. Louis on June 8th at the Firebird. Prior to the gig that evening, they performed a four song session for local station KDHX. Stream the live session and watch their performance of "Bitchin' Camero" (complete with ~ 5 minute intro from leader Rodney Linderman, who at one point announced to the crowd the band is NOT a novelty act, and their new songs are "faster and angrier" than the old ones).

A Joe Strummer mural was unveiled in London on June 13th. Gary Loveridge came up with the idea after seeing a mural of Strummer in New York City.  Artist Emma Harrison eventually put Loveridge's idea into motion and the rest is history.  On Thursday night the mural was unveiled in a (sadly windy) ceremony, but the turnout was great and was attended by Strummer's ex-bandmate Mick Jones. Check out video from the unveiling below and read more about how the mural came about here.

Don't let the name fool you: Unhappybirthday aren't a Smiths' cover band, nor do they sound anything like the Smiths. Instead, this trio from Wismar, Germany probably should have named themselves Transmission or Shellshock, because they immediately bring to mind the post-punk and synth of Joy Division and New Order . To date Unhappybirthday have two releases under their belt: 2012's full length debut Sirup*; and Kraken, a five song ep which followed in February. I found both releases to be highly enjoyable and purchased them immediately after streaming on Bandcamp.  Go ahead and listen to some sounds from Unhappybirthday below:

[Full disclosure: they sing in German so I have no idea what the songs are really about, but they sure sound cool.]

The full length album Sirup is a bit more varied with post-punk/noise elements, while the Kraken ep is more of a synth/electro love letter to New Order. Start off with a few tracks from Sirup:

"Pyramiden" (official video)

"Dakota"

"Kalt"

*Sirup was originally released in 2012, but was re-issued with new cover art and two extra tracks last month.  I highly recommend the new version (with the purple flower cover art) over the 2012 version.  Purchase Sirup from iTunesAmazon, or Bandcamp.

Now take a listen to a few tracks from the Kraken ep:

Stream three songs from Kraken below: "Koma," "Fluorid," and "Himitsu"

Download the Kraken ep from iTunes, Amazon, or Bandcamp and catch up with Unhappybirthday on Facebook and Tumblr.

Perhaps Bernard Sumner was inspired (annoyed) by Peter Hook's book Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division, or he was planning his own memoir/autobiography all along. Regardless, Transworld Publishers announced today that Sumner's book, which is still untitled, will be released this fall. Here's what Sumner himself had to say about the forthcoming book in a press release (via The Bookseller):

"Joy Division and New Order have both left quite a legacy but up until now I've been happy to let the music speak for itself.  Somehow it feels like the right time to give my personal perspective both on my own life story and the many bands I've been in.  I'm very excited to be working with Transworld on this book and to be published by the same company as the guy who gave us our first break, John Peel, as well as our former label mate Shaun Ryder."

The release date has not been announced, but it will be published in fall 2014.  Maybe this will spur Hooky on to write his New Order book (the one he revealed will contain "filthy, dirty, dark secrets") a little sooner, than later.

Stone Roses For Piano is exactly what you'd expect from the title - a soothing collection of Stone Roses' songs performed by pianist Richard Thomas. The recordings are somewhat different from the popular Rockabye Baby series - these piano versions are indeed great for indoctrinating the babies, but they're also perfect for more adult occasions like dinner parties or weddings.  The first album (pictured above) was released in 2009, and the second volume, Second Symphony, followed in 2011.  Additionally a cover of "Love Spreads" was released last year as a one-off single (presumably for the Roses' reunion).  Stream a few songs and check out the tracklistings below.  Links to download are posted underneath the tracklistings.

"Made of Stone"

"I Wanna Be Adored"

"I Am the Resurrection"

Ex-Joy Division members Peter Hook and Stephen Morris may be on opposite ends of the New Order battle, but there's one thing they agree on - Macclesfield, the birthplace of Ian Curtis, isn't doing enough to honor the late singer. Last week Hook told the Macclesfield Express he's surprised more isn't done to honor Curtis and suggested a statue of Curtis should be erected in the town center:

"It’s always struck me that Macclesfield don’t do much to celebrate one of its most famous sons...What about an Ian Curtis statue with him dancing away in the town centre?"

In today's Macclesfield Express, Stephen Morris agrees Curtis isn't honored enough, but thinks a dancing statue isn't the best idea.

"I don’t like the idea of seeing Ian like that. I also believe Ian would have hated the idea of a statue of him, especially of him dancing"

Morris suggested a more artistic memorial, like a column might be a better way to honor Curtis.  Read Morris' comments here.

Curtis' ashes are buried in the Macclesfield Cemetery, and tons of fans visit the site each year to pay respect.

Last night the Replacements announced they'll reunite and perform a trio of shows later on this year. The three shows are headline slots for this year's Riot Fests in Chicago, Toronto, and Denver. One of the reunion shows will take place in Chicago, which is pretty fitting considering the band's final show took place in the Windy City back in 1991.

Tickets for all three Riot Fests are on sale now:

Chicago's Riot Fest is September 13 through 15 and also features old school acts Blondie, Violent Femmes, Dinosaur Jr, X, Peter Hook, Bob Mould, and more. Tickets are available here.

Toronto's Riot Fest is August 24 & 25 and includes Iggy & the Stooges, Dinosaur Jr, Rocket From the Crypt, and more. Tickets are available here.

Denver's Riot Fest is September 21 & 22nd and includes Iggy & the Stooges, Naked Ray Gun, Flag, Bad Religion, the Stranglers, and more. Tickets are available here.

Beady Eye released the new album Be earlier this month and the band has been on a whirlwind publicity tour ever since. British GQ spent some time recently interviewing the band, and as you'd expect, Liam Gallagher provided tons of entertaining material. Some nuggets: Gallagher thinks Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers "Islands in the Stream" would be the song he'd choose to karaoke to, he'd love a Smiths' reunion (even though he says he was never a big fan), and he admitted his "Jesus center parting" haircut from years ago made him look like a "dick." But by far the most entertaining quote from the article was his commentary on Kanye West. The interviewer asked Gallagher what he thought of West naming his album Yeezus:

"I couldn't give a f**k what that f***in clown gets up to. Have you seen when he bumped his head? He's coming out of the gym with that bird and there are geezers taking pictures. You have to put your head up and carry on walking. He's gone [mimes putting his head down] and walked straight into a f***king pole. You hear it go "dink" and him tell people to stop taking pictures. Put your head up so you know what you're doing! Smashed his head up: he's a f***ing idiot. You'll never see Jesus banging his head."

Ministry's classic track "You Know What You Are" from the wildly influential album Land of Rape and Honey was remixed recently. The dOGstep DJ edit 2012 offers up a more dancefloor friendly version, with a faster beat, and decidedly clearer vocals. The intention of the remixer was to make the song more club friendly, allowing DJs to help mold young minds. Sort of. Stream it below and download it for free:

dOGulas also remixed the Mirorrball remix of KMFDM's "Split" (the Mirrorball remix was released by KMFDM in 1992, so the remix below is actually a remix of a remix).  Stream and grab a free download:

Time for another Rodriguez-esque Detroit success story: A documentary about the virtually unknown 70s Detroit punk band Death is getting ready to open for a limited engagement this month. The film tells the story of the trio, which is credited as "the first black punk group" and whose music pre-dated well known punk acts like the Ramones and Sex Pistols. The band, (three brothers - Bobby, David, and Dennis Hackney), was active from 1974 through 1977 and released only a 7 song demo and one 45 single before disbanding. Years later (2009) an old Death demo somehow resurfaced and started making the rounds, which led to the demo being re-released, this time as a full album titled ...For The Whole World To See.  Death became active again (minus the late David Hackney), and just this weekend they performed at the Orion Festival on Belle Isle.

A Band Called Death will open for a limited engagement on June 28th. For more on A Band Called Death, visit the film's official site, read this weekend's piece in the Detroit Free Press (via Mr. Magoo).  The film's official trailer and short interview with the band is posted below:

It's been almost a year since the fatal Radiohead stage collapse at Downsview Park in Toronto. Tragically the stage collapsed about an hour before gates opened on June 17, 2012, killing Radiohead drum tech Scott Johnson and injuring three others. The Ministry of Labour in Canada spent time investigating the cause of the collapse, and today they announced 13 charges have been filed: 8 against Live Nation Canada; 4 against Optex Staging; and 1 against an individual engineer. According to the Toronto Star the first court date related to the charges is scheduled for June 27th.
