The original Smashing Pumpkins lineup may be reuniting! Yesterday, Billy Corgan posted a video update telling fans to expect "something big" in the near future. Though Corgan isn't revealing what the big news is yet, it's entirely possible and likely that Smashing Pumpkins' original lineup -- Corgan, James Iha, D'Arcy Wretsky, and Jimmy Chamberlin -- will be reuniting for a tour in 2017. A reunion seemed wholly impossible up until recently -- though Corgan's been on great terms with Chamberlin (he's in the current SP lineup), the same can't be said for Wretsky or Iha. Corgan's had nothing good or even decent to say about Wretsky or Iha for years, but somehow things turned around in March when Corgan shockingly reunited with Iha at Smashing Pumpkins shows in Los Angeles and Chicago. Not long after that, Corgan also reportedly commented that he'd like to make peace with Wretsky.
Adding to the likelihood of a reunion: in the same video update from yesterday Corgan announced he's forming a new project with all the existing/touring members of Smashing Pumpkins -- everyone that is, except Jimmy Chamberlin. This seems to suggest Corgan wants to continue making music with the current incarnation of the Smashing Pumpkins, but he'd like to call the band something else. Using a new band name would reserve the Smashing Pumpkins name for the original lineup, while giving him the ability to continue making music with his current bandmates.
Also: Corgan has allegedly been in contact with promoters to determine interest in booking the Smashing Pumpkins' original lineup at festivals in 2017, so...if this is true, it certainly seems like a foregone conclusion that a reunion announcement is imminent. Or not. Stay tuned, because things could get interesting.
In the meantime, watch Corgan's video announcement/update here.
