Soundgarden has teamed up with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock for the release of the Soundgarden's collection Telephantasm. Telephantasm is available bundled with copies of Guitar Hero this week. The collection will be available as a single cd (on its own without being tethered to Guitar Hero) starting October 5th. A new cd from Killing Joke, Absolute Dissent, will be released September 27th. Check out "the Raven King" below.

The Radio Dept is offering a free download of their song, "the New Improved Hypocrisy." The song is available via the Labrador website here. The Radio Dept is expected to release an EP in November titled Never Follow Suit.
It looks like new music from Radiohead is on the way, but according to bassist Colin Greenwood, the band is still deciding on how to release it. Read Greenwood's essay on the music industry and technology here.

Crocodiles will release a new cd, Sleep Forever, on September 14th. In the meantime, the band is giving away a free 4-track ep titled Fires of Comparison. The ep (unlike the upcoming full length cd) is mostly instrumental--according to the band's press release, "both boys contracted strep throat from sharing a pipe with a hobo in Sand Diego's Preside Park, hence the lack of vocals." Nice.
Check out the trailer for the Social Network--the upcoming film about Facebook. The film is an adaptation of the 2009 book, the Accidental Billionaires. The Social Network opens October 1st.

Radiohead's Phil Selway is set to release his debut solo cd, Familial, in August. Check out the track, "By Some Miracle" here, and if you sign up for Selway's mailing list, you can download the song for free. You can also pre-order the full-length cd on his official website. Familial is expected to be released on August 31st.

A new Radiohead cd is set to be released in the fall. Ed O'Brien made the revelation during an interview with BBC 6 this past weekend. He also said the forthcoming cd will be the best record the band has ever made. The entire interview is streaming on the BBC 6 website, but it will only be up for another six days, so don't delay in clicking over to listen to it.

Amanda Palmer from Dresden Dolls has recorded a Radiohead covers ep...using a ukulele. The release is aptly titled Amanda Palmer Plays the Popular Hits of Radiohead on Her Magical Ukulele. Palmer has posted her cover of "Idioteque" here, so take a listen. The vinyl version of the release is rumored to come packaged with a ukulele, and will be released on July 20th.
Richard Ashcroft (formerly of the Verve) will be releasing a new cd with his new band United Nations of Sound next month. Check out the first single, "Are You Ready?" here. The full length self-titled disc drops July 19th.

Trent Reznor, his wife Mariqueen, and NIN collaborator Atticus Ross have a new project titled How to Destroy Angels*. The project's 6-song ep will be available as a free download starting June 1st. A 2 dollar version will also be available, plus a physical version will be released in July. Check out the band's official website for more info.

Apparatjik is the new project featuring members of Coldplay, Mew, and a-ha. The band's full length cd, We Are Here, drops June 15th. In the meantime, Apparatijik is currently offering fans a free 3 song sampler. Yesterday Blur released a limited 7 inch single for Record Store Day. "Fool's Day" is a new song--it was recorded in early April. Yesterday the 7 inch sold out quickly, and now the band wants to give YOU a copy (or at least a mp3) for FREE. Here's the statement the band posted on their site:

Blur’s new song Fool’s Day recorded especially for Record Store Day has sold out on limited edition 7 inch vinyl record. Fool’s Day was available across the UK at independent music retailers participating in Record Store Day. 1000 7 inch vinyl copies were pressed.

Blur’s manager Chris Morrison has said it is important that the song was made available to fans legally. "To avoid fans having to illegally obtain an inferior copy of this track from pirate sites – we have made it freely available through the band’s website".

Devon Clifford, drummer for You Say Party! We Say Die! died this morning in Vancouver. According to reports Clifford collapsed during the band's show Friday night. At this point the official cause of death is unknown, but reports suggest Clifford died from a brain hemorrhage. Clifford was 30 years old.

The band's official website has not been updated at this time, but the band's label, Paper Bag records has posted this statement:

It is with absolute sadness to report that our dear friend Devon Clifford, the drummer of You Say Party We Say Die, passed away last night in a Vancouver hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

We request that we respect the family’s privacy during this incredibly difficult time, and thank you for your support.

Alex Chilton died March 17th from a suspected heart attack. Chilton's band, Big Star, was set to play the South by Southwest Music festival in Austin this weekend. Mike Mills (from REM) will join the surviving band members onstage for a Chilton tribute/memorial tonight in Austin. Chilton was 59 years old.

Mark Linkous from Sparklehorse committed suicide yesterday. His death has been confirmed by his family. Read the Rolling Stone report here.

The White Stripes have proclaimed March 16th to be White Stripes Day. The band will be releasing their DVD Under Great White Northern Lights on March 16th, plus they'll be holding a super secret screening of their DVD for fans at a super secret location. (The March 16th screening is in addition to the March 11th midnight screening at the AMC Forum 30 in Sterling Heights and March 11th 9pm screening at the Burton Theater in Detroit). Fans can visit the band's official website to sign up for official info regarding the March 16th secret screening.

Soundgarden is giving away a free download of a live version of "Spoonman" recorded in San Diego in 1996.

In more Soundgarden news, a special orange-colored vinyl 7 inch single will be available on Record Store Day (April 17th). The release features the reissue of "Hunted Down" and "Nothing to Say." Click here to find a list of participating independent record stores.
The first ep of the Teargarden for Kaliedyscope series will be available as a physical release on April 20th. All the songs in the series will be available as free downloads, but each 4-song physical ep releases will contain special artwork and more. That being said, the latest Smashing Pumpkins song, "A Stitch in Time" is now available as a free download:

The White Stripes will release a live DVD titled Under Great White Northern Lights on March 16th. A handful of nationwide screenings to celebrate the release have been planned for March. The AMC Forum 30 in Sterling Heights will screen the dvd at midnight on March 11th (evening of March 10), and the Burton Theater in Detroit will hold a screening March 11th at 9pm. Thom Yorke from Radiohead will be embarking on a (very) short North American tour in the spring. Yorke's backing band, Atoms For Peace (named after a song on the Eraser) will consist of Flea, Nigel Godrich, Mauro Refosco and Joey Waronker. The band will also be playing the previously announced Coachella Festival in Indio, California. Here are the tour dates which will take place in the month of April:

Since everyone's been subjected to the horrifying "We Are the World" sequel, I figured it might be a good time to revisit Pulp's "Bad Cover Version." If you haven't seen it, it's a spoof on all the celebrity charity songs/videos--and take note, all the "artists" seen in the video are actually celebrity impersonators. The official video was pulled from youtube due to issues from the celebrities depicted in the video.
