Not long ago shoegaze legends Ride announced they've been working on their first studio album in 20 years with producer Erol Alkan. The band has now confirmed that the album is due out next summer and is still untitled.  Andy Bell also revealed a few more exciting and intriguing details to Uncut: the "trashy and poppy" yet "ambient and psychedelic" album was recorded over 17 days and features material that developed from jams Ride recorded at soundchecks while on tour.  From the interview*:

"There's a couple where one person has brought in the entire thing, but there are far more where we've jammed out something and one of us has taken the initiative to do the melody and words, or some other permutation of it all. At times, it's quite trashy and poppy and other times it's quite ambient and psychedelic. It's equal parts Motorhead and William Basinski. Aggressive ambience!"

Ride's new album is sure to be a phenomenal sonic experience! Catch up with Ride on their official website, Facebook, and Twitter.

*The interview is part of Uncut's 2017 preview which is only available to subscribers, however Ride posted a scan of the interview here.

Morrissey has gotten into the spirit of Christmas. The legend shared a few pictures of himself with a cigar (festive!) and penned a few words about animals and animal cruelty on True To You. The posting titled Morry Christmas From Merrissey, 2016 can be viewed here.

Peter Murphy just wrapped up his Stripped tour, which featured the legend performing stripped down versions of career-spanning classics (Bauhaus, solo material, covers). Now Murphy has revealed that fans who missed the tour will have an opportunity to enjoy some of Stripped at home. He's releasing a live album titled Bare-Boned & Sacred which features 12 songs captured live during the New York stop of the tour. The tracklisting has not been posted, though it is confirmed that a cover of David Bowie's "Belway Brothers" will be included. Pre-order Bare-Boned & Sacred through Metropolis Records.

Meanwhile, Murphy has revealed he's working on other projects and has "so many plans afoot" so it sounds like 2017 may be an exciting one for Peter Murphy fans. Read more about that here.

Nine Inch Nails unearthed their first set of songs since 2013's Hesitation Marks today, lead by the first single "Burning Bright (Field On Fire)." Trent said of the EP "It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make."  And he didn't lie.

Nine Inch Nails are back with a darkness, heaviness and intensity not seen/heard for some time.  Stream the phenomenal "Burning Bright (Field On Fire)" here.

The physical edition of Not The Actual Events is available to pre-order (ships in the spring) but comes with an immediate download. The high resolution digital download is available now exclusively from NIN's store. The EP will be released through other digital platforms tomorrow (December 23rd).

You know what to do.

"Digital formats and streaming are great and certainly convenient, but the ideal way I’d hope a listener experience my music is to grab a great set of headphones, sit with the vinyl, drop the needle, hold the jacket in your hands looking at the artwork (with your fucking phone turned off) and go on a journey with me."

Paul Weller returns with a new studio album titled A Kind Revolution in the spring. The Modfather teased the album last week on social media, and today confirmed the title of the album and a few other details in an interview with Uncut

He told the mag A Kind Revolution includes some material written around the time of Saturns Patterns, though most of the songs were written in 2016. The album includes a few guests including Boy George, who is featured on a song titled "One Tear":

"It's quite housey. George sings the first verse and then he comes in on the chorus. Our voices sound really good together."

Weller also briefly discussed another project -- he wrote the soundtrack to the upcoming film Jawbone, which is expected out in the first quarter of 2017.

Weller promises more details on A Kind Revolution and the Jawbone soundtrack will be announced in early 2017.

A collection of songs that New Order produced/remixed and released on Factory Records circa 1982 - 1985 is set for release early next year. Back in 1981, all four members of New Order (Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Gillian Gilbert) used the generic Be Music moniker for their production work, remixing/producing songs for Quando Quando, Section 25, A Certain Ratio, and many others. As New Order's popularity rose in the mid-80's, the band eventually abandoned Be Music to focus on producing their own material (as opposed to other bands' material), but recently Stephen Morris resurrected the Be Music name for recent remix efforts involving Factory Floor, Tim Burgess and Fujiya & Miyagi.

New Order Presents Be Music will be released February 17th as a standard 2 LP set or expanded 3 CD set. One of the noteworthy bonus tracks included on the 3 CD set (but not the LP edition) is the 1979 recording of Section 25's "Knew Noise" produced by Joy Division's Ian Curtis and Rob Gretton.

Michael Stipe appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night. During the six minute chat, Stipe discussed his "biblical" beard, the 25th anniversary of Out Of Time, and the electoral college. He also gave R.E.M. fans a scintilla of hope -- Colbert asked him if he ever feels like jumping onstage to perform, to which Stipe replied:

"I saw PJ Harvey...Radiohead...you see them up there, and it's like, wow, I kinda wanna jump up there again. But I had to step away from music for awhile."

Before Colbert could tease more out of Stipe's most intriguing revelation, the R.E.M. leader quickly moved along to mention he recently produced and co-wrote a new album for Fischerspooner which is due out next year.  Stipe called the collaboration "a complete surprise...I didn't anticipate doing it, but they asked me to help them with a couple of songs and I wound up co-writing everything."

Watch the interview below along with video of Stipe, Colbert, and James Franco performing an updated-for-2016 version of "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)":

A year ago -- December 2015 -- Trent Reznor promised he'd release new Nine Inch Nails music in 2016. Just days ago Rolling Stone pinned down Reznor to ask him whether he'd meet his deadline, to which Reznor responded "wait and see what happens." Well, it turns out Reznor is making good on his promise -- today NIN announced a slew of exciting things, not the least of which is the band's first new music since 2013's Hesitation Marks.  A new five song EP titled Not The Actual Events will be released December 23rd.  According to Reznor:

"It's an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make. It's an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story."

Reznor also announced that "Definitive Editions" of Broken, The Downward Spiral, and The Fragile will be released on vinyl in the spring. The reissues include "careful remastering of the audio from the original sources, a painstaking recreation of the artwork...No extra bullshit and gimmicks – the ‘real’ records in their truest form."

Fans of 1999's the Fragile have even more to get excited about -- an expanded edition of the album titled The Fragile: Deviations 1 will be released as a limited edition 4LP set with 37 bonus tracks!  Reznor explains:

"I was going through a turbulent time in my life when making it and revisiting it has become a form of therapy for me. As an experiment, I removed all the vocals from the record and found it became a truly changed experience that worked on a different yet compelling level.

The Fragile: Deviations 1 represents Atticus and I embellishing the original record with a number of tracks from those sessions we didn’t use before...the result paints a complimentary but different picture we wanted to share."

All the NIN releases are available to pre-order now from the band's webstore. The vinyl editions will ship in the spring; digital formats will be available to download on December 22nd.

Finally, Reznor shared his thoughts on the physical experience of vinyl -- read his "vinyl mission statement" below:

"Vinyl has returned to being a priority for us - not just for the warmth of the sound, but the interaction it demands from the listener. The canvas of artwork, the weight of the record, the smell of the vinyl, the dropping of the needle, the difficulty of skipping tracks, the changing of sides, the secrets hidden within, and having a physical object that exists in the real world with you… all part of the experience and magic.

Digital formats and streaming are great and certainly convenient, but the ideal way I’d hope a listener experience my music is to grab a great set of headphones, sit with the vinyl, drop the needle, hold the jacket in your hands looking at the artwork (with your fucking phone turned off) and go on a journey with me."

Amen, Mr. Reznor!

In 2014 The Vacant Lots wowed psych-rock fans with their stellar debut album Departure.  Now the New York duo have upped their psych game with the release of a new EP titled Berlin. Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre mixed, produced, and plays on the record (as the story goes, the Vacant Lots opened for BJM and Newcombe was so impressed with the band he offered to work with them on the EP). The results are nothing less than fantastic -- if you dig psychedelic music, this EP is for you.

Berlin is available now to download and stream. The import vinyl version will be available stateside later this month.

Morrissey has now canceled the remaining 6 dates of his rescheduled U.S. tour. In an announcement titled "There Is A Light That Now Goes Out" Morrissey made it official on True To You:

"The band, the crew and I are heartbroken to hear that the final six shows of our triumphant tour will be 'pulled down'. The shock and sadness that we all feel - for ourselves, and for our devoted friends in Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, has left us in unrecoverable despair."

The posting went on to discuss Morrissey's favorite cities on the tour, then made another comment about the canceled shows:

"We expect no further chances in Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Dallas or San Antonio ... nights destroyed by the ephemeral damagers ... who do their worst ... and slip away.

I can only stress my sincere thanks once again to YOU for giving the band, the crew and I a phenomenal year - scarred at the end, but drenched in beauty until then.

I will see you in extremely far-off places."

Ride reunited in 2014 to the utter delight of fans around the world.  Their reunion has been triumphantly celebrated by fans (many of them new fans!) and music critics alike.  Ride debuted three new songs recently leading fans to assume a new album is on the way, but assume no more: it is confirmed that Ride are currently in the studio working on their first set of new songs since 1996's Tarantula. Photographic proof comes from producer Erol Alkan, who posted a picture of Ride in the studio and revealed he is producing their new album. Ride haven't confirmed a release date for the album, but NME and Pitchfork are reporting/guessing that the album will be released in 2017.

Ride reformed in 2014 after being inspired by the Stone Roses and the Mancunian band's successful reunion. Though Ride intended to reunite to play fan favorites and hits, they never ruled out creating new music. Here's a quote from a 2014 Mark Gardner interview with the BBC:

"People bought our records first time round but our music has grown in significance since we've been away... We want to give the people what they want. We'd be idiots to go out and play a new album, but that's not to say we wouldn't make new music."

"We have to learn the old chords again, but you never know what can happen with these things. I just want to plug an electric guitar in again, I've enjoyed acoustic things and stuff, but I'm greatly inspired to plug in and make noise again."

Producer John Leckie has worked with legions of incredible bands over the years including Ride, Radiohead, The Stone Roses, The Verve, The Fall, Trash Can Sinatras, XTC, and Magazine. Leckie recently sat down with Iain McNay, founder of Cherry Red Records to discuss his incredible career as part of Cherry Red's Adventures In Music television series. The two part video interview is a fascinating window into music recording and is recommended for anyone show shares a love of music, especially U.K. music, and music history.

The interview begins with Leckie explaining how he began as a tape operator at Abbey Road where he worked alongside the Beatles on their solo projects, and detailed how he was able to advance to become an engineer and eventually a producer. Throughout he shared stories about bands he's worked with: "rude and aggressive" Public Image Ltd, the "fun, loud rock and roll" of The Fall, and how he's especially proud of producing Magazine's Real Life, an album he considers timeless.

Leckie discussed recording the seminal debut album from The Stone Roses, revealing there were "good vibes" in the recording studio for the entire 55 day process. He called the Roses "good fun to be with," "well rehearsed," and contrasted that with the recording of The Second Coming, which took much longer to record and was an overall dramatically different experience because the bond between band members had deteriorated.

As time went on bands requested to work with Leckie, though he turned many down. The one and only band that he actively pursued was the Verve -- he revealed he knew he had to work with them after seeing their "classic cosmic psychedelic" live show and was blown away by their guitar sounds he hadn't heard before. He's pleased he produced the seminal A Storm In Heaven but suggests it would have been even better had the songs been kept longer (the band's label Virgin requested the songs be chopped from 10 minutes to a more radio friendly three or four minutes).

Other fun stories include Leckie discussing how he recorded XTC's early material on the sly because his studio wouldn't allow him to do it, how Radiohead were in awe of Ride, and confirmation that Syd Barrett really did mysteriously appear in the studio during Pink Floyd's recording of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."

And there are so many more great stories...

Watch the interview below -- the interview is cut up into two parts: part one focuses on Leckie's beginnings, includes stories about the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Be Bop Deluxe, XTC and Public Image Ltd. Part two focuses mostly on the late 80's and 90's era with stories about The Stone Roses, The Verve, Radiohead, Alan McGee, and the evolving music industry.

"It's with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our drummer and close friend, Craig Gill. We are all absolutely devastated by the news.

Craig was our brother.

We were honoured to work alongside him for the last 30 years. To say we'll miss him is an understatement.  He was the beating heart of the Inspirals in more ways than one.

Our love and thoughts go out to all Craig's family and friends and especially his wife, Rose and their beautiful children, Georgia, Orla and Levon.

The Sisters Of Mercy have been out on tour and are about to wrap things up later this month with a string of dates in the U.K.  Though the band's last album was released back in 1990, over the years they've performed some new material at their shows.  As it turns out, it looks like fans may just get a brand new Sisters record in the future if Andrew Eldritch keeps his promise.

In an interview with Team Rock back in June, Eldritch gave many reasons NOT to make an album -- time, effort, money, society's devaluation of music, and discord between the band and their (now ex) record label.  However near the end of that same interview the topic of discussion turned to the U.S. presidential election and Eldritch dropped this bomb:

"If Donald Trump actually does become President, that will be reason enough for me to release another album. I don't think I could keep quiet if that happened."

Your move, Andrew!
