MTV is turning 30 tomorrow! The channel launched Saturday, August 1st, 1981 at the stroke of midnight. Maybe you missed the official launch (most people did since cable, even basic cable, was pretty expensive and not available in all areas back in the day). At any rate, why not trip back in time and watch the very first hour of MTV (commericals and all) on this website. Fun stuff.

David J from Love & Rockets (and of course Bauhaus) is going to release a new cd this fall. The cd is titled Not Long For This World, and it's set to drop October 18th. Billy Corgan actually had a hand in getting this released, for more on that click here.

Rolling Stone recently held a readers poll where fans were asked to choose their favorite U2 songs of all time. Check out the top 10 vote getting songs here. I'll go ahead and say I agree with a few of the rankings, but was wholeheartedly shocked and disappointed with the number one song chosen. But you know what they say about opinions...

A bunch of great music popped onto the radar this week. Most of these things I've blogged about previously, but these songs are so good they're worth blogging about them again!

Noel Gallagher released the video for "the Death of You & Me" on Monday. The single will be available in a variety of formats on August 21st (or August 22nd if you want the physical version) and the full length self-titled cd will drop on October 17th in the U.K, and November 8th in North and South America. Pre-order the single and/or full cd from Noel's official website. Watch the video for "the Death of You & Me" below:

I seriously love, love, love the newly released ep from Films of Colour! The Capital/Persinette ep features 4 songs (studio and acoustic versions of "Capital" and "Persinette") and it's all sooooooo good! You can check out the video for "Capital" below, and buy the ep from iTunes. Catch up with the band here.

I cannot wait for the new release from M83 this fall. Hurry Up We're Dreaming will drop in October (official date not released yet). If you haven't already, hurry on over to M83's website to download, "Midnight City" for free! You can check out the song below.

Ok, I'm worn out, so that's it for now!
It was a dramatic video shoot for Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr today. According to the band, while they were shooting a music video in a park, an elderly man nearby collapsed. The director of the video ran over to the man and performed CPR until an ambulance could arrive and whisk the man away to a nearby hospital.
Jared Followill has taken to Twitter to apologize to fans for the cutting last night's show in Dallas short after Caleb Followill was too drunk to go on. Some reports claimed Caleb was suffering from heat exhaustion, though it's pretty clear from the video Caleb is liquored up. Jared confirmed it was more than heat exhaustion in the tweets he sent out just a few minutes ago:

Dallas, I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am. There are internal sicknesses & problems that have needed to be addressed. No words.

I love our fans so much. I know you guys aren't stupid. I can't lie. There are problems in our band bigger than not drinking enough Gatorade

Scroll down the blog a couple of posts to see footage of an incoherent Caleb Followill from last night's show.

Update: Kings of Leon have announced that tonight's show in Houston has been canceled.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers played a show in Nevada City last night and played some stuff off their forthcoming cd, I'm With You. You can check out the live version of the song, "Monarchy of Roses" below. The band's full length cd is set to drop August 30th.

Caleb Followill from Kings of Leon was too wasted to play a show in Dallas last night. Watch video of Caleb's drunken rambling below. One of the highlights is Caleb saying, "for the record, I'm not drunk, I'm fucking hot." Ummm, ok then.

The video cuts out a few times, but stick with it. Near the end Caleb walks off stage (after saying he's gonna vomit then come back and sing 3 more songs). Of course he never makes it back on stage forcing bandmates Matt and Jared to inform the crowd that the show is over. After the crowd boos a frazzled Matt & Jared tell the crowd to "blame Caleb, not us." Oh, to be a fly on the wall backstage!

Historically, July doesn't seem to be a great month for Kings of Leon. Last July, Jared was pooed on by a pigeon. This July, Caleb unravels. Perhaps next July the band should consider vacationing instead of playing live.

Morrissey has never shied away from making controversial comments during his lengthy career. Recently he uttered a doozy of a comment about Norway at a concert in Poland. Morrissey was about to play the Smiths' classic, "Meat is Murder" but before he played the song he allegedly said:

"We all live in a murderous world as the events in Norway have shown...though that is nothing compated to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried **** every day."

Read more about the story here.

If you like Radiohead, Coldplay, or Arcade Fire, you might just dig U.K. band Films of Colour. They don't have a full cd out yet, but last year they released a couple of singles, and today they released an amazing ep titled Capital/Persinette ep on iTunes. It blows me away how great this is. Seriously cool. Check out the cover art for the ep as well as the video for "Capital" below.

MTV's old school alternative video show, 120 Minutes, is set to return to MTV2 next Saturday night. The show originally aired in the late 80's all the way through the early 2000's, and was finally axed after MTV became a reality show network. At any rate, the show will be resurrected and will air on MTV2 on the last Saturday of every month. The first episode is set to air Saturday night (well, really Sunday morning at 1am--so it's on Saturday night/Sunday morning), and will be hosted by Matt Pinfield. This Saturday's episode will feature interviews with David Grohl, Dangermouse & Daniele Luppi, Kings of Leon, PJ Harvey, Sleigh Bells, and more. 120 Minutes will also be available to view on MTV.com.

Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London flat earlier today. Police have not given the official cause of death though it is likely she died from a drug overdose. An autopsy will be performed tomorrow. Winehouse was 27 years old. You can read more about Winehouse's life and death here, here, and here.

Many have been commenting on Winehouse joning the "27 club" as Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, and Kurt Cobain all died from overdoses at the age of 27. Perhaps Billy Bragg had the most insightful comment of all: "it's not age that Hendrix, Jones, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain & Amy have in common- it's drug abuse, sadly." Indeed.

Take a look at Winehouse's American television debut on Letterman in 2007.

Billy Corgan was interviewed by the Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot. Corgan discussed the fall of alternative Chicago station Q101 (the station flipped formats recently), the record industry, the Smashing Pumpkins' past/present/future, and selling out (he names names, in particular, Pavement). Check out the interview/podcast here.

If this report in the Mirror is to be believed, Morrissey fans were patted down in an attempt to prevent fans from bringing (smuggling?) meat products into a recent Morrissey show.
What is it with bass players and the law this week??? Ex-Queens of the Stoneage bassist Nick Oliveri was arrested last night on domestic violence charges after a 5 hour standoff with a SWAT team. According to Oliveri's girlfriend, Oliveri hit her during an altercation on Monday night. Police came by Monday, however Oliveri had already fled the scene. He returned on Tuesday and that's when cops came by to arrest him. When police arrived Oliveri took his girlfriend hostage and a SWAT team was called in to handle things. The standoff lasted for about 5 hours, after which Oliveri was arrested and hauled into the pokey. Read more on the situation here and here.

Interestingly enough, Oliveri's ex-bandmate
Josh Homme claimed he kicked Oliveri out of Queens of the Stoneage due to domestic violence. Read about that here.

Morrissey fansite true-to-you.net is reporting that the Man, the Myth, the Legend got attacked by a dog in the U.K. recently! He fractured his right index finger and sustained other injuries to his hand and arm. According to reports Moz is ok and is in great spirits (not sure about the dog).  Read about the sordid tale here.

Coheed & Cambria's bass player, Michael Todd, was arrested before the band's show in Massachusetts tonight on armed robbery charges. According to reports, Todd went to a Walgreen's, allegedly told the pharmacy he had a bomb, walked away with 6 bottles of Oxycontin, and fled in a taxi. The story seems unbelievable, however TMZ is reporting this, and the band has confirmed the story on their official site. Coheed's official statement on the matter can be read below:

Michael Todd was arrested today on what we consider very serious charges and therefore he will not be finishing up the current tour. Wes Styles, long time member of the Coheed family will take on bass duties starting tomorrow for the remaining dates. No shows will be canceled.

We are surprised to say the least and will address the situation with Michael after the tour. For now, we just want to have a great time out here and finish with some killer shows in Boston, Poughkeepsie, Quebec City and Halifax.

1230 at night here in los angeles. sitting on the floor of my hotel room, listening to the first mix of the first track to come back from the new album. stoked beyond words to be listening to new music from our band. on the OTHER side of the creative process. listening to the songs not to figure out what and if it needs more of. listening just to hear the music. i love this song, and the mixer did a great job, it sounds amazing. i can’t wait until this album comes out, and i hope that when it does you all are as excited as i am sitting here by myself in the middle of the night, cross-leeged on the floor of a hotel room, with headphones on, listening to this song over and over. thank you for supporting our band. blink-182 life, for life.

Noel also revealed that he has another full cd already in the can and he'll release that next year. The second cd was a collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous.

The entire press conference will be posted later on Noel's newly launched website & also his YouTube channel.

Much to the dismay of Nancy Grace, "Tot Mom" aka Casey Anthony was found not guilty by a jury of her peers today in Florida. It's not often I would catch Grace on the boob-tube, but when I did , she'd be going on and on and on about the case. No one seems sure why the ex-Court TV queen loves using the term "Tot Mom" but she's coined the phrase and uses it so often it could be a drinking game (though you'd be drunk 5 minutes into her nightly program).

At any rate, since "Tot Mom" sounds similar to "Tattva" when you say it (or sing it) why not travel back to more splendid days when Kula Shaker was all the rage. For maximum entertainment, sing along out loud.
