The Damned announced they'll head into the studio next month with legendary producer Tony Visconti to record their eleventh studio album and first since 2008's So Who's Paranoid? The band will be recording the album in Brooklyn and called working with Visconti a "dream come true." From their statement:

"We want to to the unexpected. We've never been predictable...neither has Tony. There will be a measure of experimentation and we know he'll do his best to artistically challeng us. He's been at the top of our producer list since we started thinking about recording the album, dream come true he's on board."

The new album from The Damned is still untitled and is expected to be released in 2018. Last year they launched a Pledge Music campaign in support of the album which you can check out here.

The Damned also announced the return of former bass player Paul Gray who played on The Black Album and Strawberries. He replaces exiting bassist Stu West.

Grant Hart, punk rock pioneer and drummer of the legendary Hüsker Dü has died. The news was revealed by Hüsker Dü, which posted a picture of Hart on social media overnight. Hart had been battling cancer and died at the age of 56.

In addition to his ferocious drumming skills, Hart shared songwriting and singing duties in Hüsker Dü. From 1977 through 1988 the trio created influential albums blending hardcore and melodic rock, paving the way for the college rock genre. After Hüsker Dü broke up in 1988 Hart went on to launch a successful solo career - first with the project Nova Mob, then later he recorded and released several critically acclaimed records under his own name. Hart's amazing life was chronicled in the 2013 documentary Every Everything: The Music, Life & Times of Grant Hart.

Ex-bandmate Bob Mould, who had a sometimes tumultuous relationship with Hart paid tribute to his fallen bandmate:

"We made amazing music together. We (almost) always agreed on how to present our collective work to the world. When we fought about the details, it was because we both cared. The band was our life.

We stopped working together in January 1988. We went on to solo careers, fronting our own bands, finding different ways to tell our individual stories. We stayed in contact over the next 29 years — sometimes peaceful, sometimes difficult, sometimes through go-betweens. For better or worse, that’s how it was, and occasionally that’s what it is when two people care deeply about everything they built together.

The tragic news of Grant’s passing was not unexpected to me. My deepest condolences and thoughts to Grant’s family, friends, and fans around the world.

Grant Hart was a gifted visual artist, a wonderful story teller, and a frighteningly talented musician. Everyone touched by his spirit will always remember."

Read Mould's full tribute here.

Bassist Greg Norton has not yet commented publicly on Hart's death.

The trio had recently approved and announced a new box set Savage Young Dü, which focuses on their early recorded output from 1979 - 1982. The collection is reportedly first in the series of reissues/releases celebrating Hüsker Dü. The company putting out the release - Numero Group - shared a beautiful and heartfelt tribute written by Ken Shipley and posted it on the label's front page of their site. Shipley revealed Hart disclosed his cancer diagnosis in 2016 but told Shipley he was "positive about beating this thing in my guts." From Shipley's tribute:

"The last time I saw Grant was in March of this year. I was in Minneapolis to gather a few more bits and bobs and scheduled time to go to dinner. He wanted pizza and suggested Red's Savoy in downtown St. Paul. He ordered enough to have leftovers the next day. He was a bit gaunt, but wisecracking and flirting with the waitress all the while. This time we shook hands at the end. He was too weak for a hug. When plans were made to fly out to the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle to pour through his archives, he wanted to join. But when it came time to go, he suddenly cooled to the idea and withdrew from the project entirely. "Can you get it out before I go?" he asked.

I'm sorry we failed, Grant. We pushed as hard as we could to get this beast into the wild, but it wasn't hard enough. You told me several times that you thought the material was subpar, that there were too many photos of Greg Norton, and insisted we change the title at the last moment just to see everyone scramble. And now it's two months to the release date and everyone is sad and asking a million questions. It's chaos down here and you're probably looking down with your arms crossed, a gigantic, mischievous grin running ear to ear. Just a boy living on Heaven Hill."

R.I.P. Grant Hart, and thank you for the music.

Gary Numan returns with his new studio album Savage: Songs From A Broken World this Friday, September 15th. While you wait for the release, enjoy the official video Numan shared earlier this week. View "When The World Comes Apart" off his apocalyptic concept record below.

Gary Numan on Savage: Songs From A Broken World:

"Savage: Songs Of A Broken World is set in an apocalyptic, post-global warming Earth in the not-too-distant future. There is no technology left and most of the planet has turned to a desolate desert wasteland. Food is scarce, water even more so, and human kindness and decency are just a dim and distant memory. Western and Eastern cultures have merged, more because of the need to simply survive than any feelings of greater tolerance or understanding. It’s a harsh, savage environment, as are the survivors who still roam across it.

"The songs are about the things people do in such a harsh and terrifying environment. It's about a desperate need to survive and do they do awful things in order to do so, and some are haunted by what they've done. That desire to be forgiven, along with some discovered remnants of an old religious book, ultimately encourages religion to resurface, and it really goes downhill from there."

Verve fans, settle in for the best treat ever: several incredible unreleased songs recorded during the sessions for Urban Hymns have appeared online.

Last week The Verve's Urban Hymns was reissued in celebration of its upcoming 20th anniversary. The expanded editions include tons of bonus material, however NONE of these unreleased/leaked demos were included on the expanded editions. Shockingly, these genius songs have never been released.

The prevailing theory is that even though some members of The Verve wanted these unreleased gems included on the 20th anniversary edition of Urban Hymns, Richard Ashcroft would not hear of it, possibly because he wants to rework/use the material for another project at some point.

These unreleased full songs (along with a few demo/alt versions) have seen light of day thanks to You Tube user StarSailing (a fan? someone from the Verve's inner circle/member of The Verve?) who began uploading these tracks right after last week's reissue.

It's unclear where StarSailing obtained these recordings, but they are indeed remarkable and underscore the brilliance of The Verve. It is hard to fathom that these songs were considered throwaways or not worthy of release. Imagine what the Verve's next record might have sounded like had they not broken up in 1998. They had songwriting momentum...to think what could have been! Alas...

It's highly possible these tracks could get pulled from You Tube, so enjoy them while you can. Thanks, StarSailing for uploading. Via Dumbing America.

The Dream Syndicate release their highly anticipated studio album How Did I Find Myself Here tomorrow. Over the last few months the band amped up the excitement for the record by sharing two amazing songs from the album -- sprawling, classic-sounding title track as well as another gorgeous song titled "Glide." This week they've unveiled the first official single "Filter Me Through You" and shared the video. Check it out below.

How Did I Find Myself Here is the band's first studio album since 1988's Ghost Stories and has been described by the band as:

"It's psychedelic, it's rocking, it's garage, it's classic, it's indie and it's even a soul and jazz record in the most literal sense, a sonic and emotional journey to the deepest recesses of your mind. It's what we do on stage and yet it's brand new. Most of all, we dig it. A lot."

Pre-order How Did I Find Myself Here through iTunes and Amazon, or check out the bundles and other exclusive items through Pledge Music.

But of course. Liam Gallagher was named Rock 'n' Roll Star Of The Year at the British GQ Men of the Year Awards. Punk poet John Cooper Clarke presented the award to Gallagher at the ceremony in London on September 5th. Gallagher accepted the "interesting" honor in a relatively modest fashion and revealed he didn't have too much to say since he had a bit too much to drink. Watch how it all went down below.

U2 are set to return with their 14th studio album Songs Of Experience. Yesterday the band premiered the album's first single "You're The Best Thing About Me" which is available to stream below. Sian Evans (The Edge's daughter) graces the cover of the single - Evans was photographed by the legendary Anton Corbijn.

Songs Of Experience is the follow up to 2014's Songs Of Innocence and arrives on December 1st. As the band revealed to The New York Times, the album was finished some time ago, but in the wake of the global political atmosphere, U2 revisited the songs and lyrics and decided it needed to be reworked. The resulting album is a much darker record than it originally set out to be, and according to Bono the underlying theme is "joy as an act of defiance." The record reportedly also includes lyrical themes of "love, fear, mortality, responsibility and hope."

Tonight tune in to The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon to see U2 perform "You're The Best Thing About Me" live.

Holger Czukay, bassist and engineer of the legendary band Can has died at the age of 79. According to reports Czukay was found dead today in Can's original studio where he had been living. The cause of death is unknown at this time.

Besides his work in Can, Czukay released several solo albums and was considered to be a sampling pioneer - he created various effects by utilizing and integrating shortwave radio broadcasts/sounds into his musical recordings. He also collaborated with several musicians including Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Eurythmics, The Edge, and Jah Wobble. [His collaboration with Sylvian produced a pair of instrumental ambient records Plight & Premonition and Flux & Mutability.]

Sadly, this is the second death to rock Can in 2017 - drummer and founder Jaki Liebezeit died January 22nd from pneumonia. He was 78 years old.

The series continues. Time for a new previously unreleased live song from The Smiths' archives in anticipation of the forthcoming expanded reissues of The Queen Is Dead. Today The Smiths shared "Bigmouth Strikes Again," recorded live at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on August 23rd, 1986. Like the previous four installments in the series, it will not be included on the newly expanded editions of The Queen Is Dead. Stream below or on Spotify.

Fans are encouraged to post memories of The Queen Is Dead and/or The Smiths on social media with a fitting hashtag (for example, #TQID2017) for inclusion on The Queen Is Dead official tribute site. View the page here.

The Queen Is Dead will be reissued as a 2CD, 5LP, and 3CD/1DVD box on October 20th with previously unreleased material. The material (original, demos, and previously unreleased material) included on these expanded editions was remastered by engineering guru Bill Inglot who worked with the Smiths previously on The Very Best Of The Smiths (Dan Hersch also contributed to that 2001 compilation).

Swervedriver are about to hit the road on their Raise/Mezcal Head tour - the band will be performing both classic shoegaze greats in full on tour. In promotion of the tour, leader Adam Franklin was asked by Noisey to rank all of Swervedriver's albums. Don't worry, I won't ruin the surprise for you, however...

...one of the interesting parts of the feature was finding out Franklin does not consider 1993's Mezcal Head one of his favorites. The album is widely considered one of the gold standards in the shoegaze genre, however Franklin called the album "flawed" and suggests that the tracklisting is what did the record in. He reveals that had they included b-sides on the album, then perhaps it would have been Swervedriver's greatest.

Read the feature on Swervedriver here.

Swervedriver are set to return with their sixth studio album in 2018. They recently launched an album campaign on Pledge Music - check it out and take a look at all the pre-order options here.
