Imagine My Bloody Valentine mixed with Explosions In The Sky mixed with Slayer. Enter Deafheaven and their stunningly beautiful album Sunbather. Much of the focus of the album has been on its pink cover -- indeed an interesting choice for a black metal/blackgaze album -- but you'll forget about the album cover once you delve into the music. This most certainly isn't for everyone - the album will be off-putting for many shoegaze fans mainly due to the vocals - but do yourself a favor and give it a listen. It's a beautifully intense piece of work and the one album I couldn't stop listening to in 2013. Stream it in full here and enjoy a few tracks below:

The eerie "Windows" includes samples of a preacher mixed along with audio of an actual drug deal featuring guitarist Kerry McCoy

Rolling Stone announced the inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2014: Nirvana, KISS, Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates, Cat Stevens, and Linda Ronstadt. The ceremony will take place April 10th at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, and the event will be televised on HBO in May.

Not surprisingly the Replacements, who were nominated for induction, didn't make the cut. They join the long list of seminal acts who have been snubbed over the years: MC5, Roxy Music, Big Star, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, The Smiths, The Pixies, Kraftwerk, The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Jam, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Husker Du, XTC, etc. Even legends like Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and the Carpenters haven't been honored.

Regardless, it's a nice tip of the hat to Nirvana, and Dave Grohl & Krist Novoselic have both commented publicly on Nirvana's inclusion in the Hall of Fame:

"For once... I'm speechless. From the basements, to the dingy clubs, to the broken down vans, to... the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I'd like to thank the committee not only for this induction, but also for recognizing Nirvana for what we were: pure rock and roll. Most of all, thank you to all of the fans that have supported rock and roll throughout the years, and to Kurt and Krist, without whom I would not be here today."

"Thank you to the people who nominated and voted for us. Thank you most of all to Kurt Cobain. And to everyone who's kept Rock music going strong for 60 years and counting."

Interestingly enough, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place just days after the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death.

Peter Murphy has finally commented publicly on his March 17th arrest for hit & run and drug possession. Murphy admits to being involved in an accident, however he vehemently denies being in possession (or being a user) of methamphetamine. In an interview with the Australian music site The Music.co.uk (via Louder Than War), Murphy reveals he's a "total teetotaler" and has no idea where the meth police discovered came from:

"If you read the police reports you will see that my drug tests were completely clean. It’s not clear where the meth came from, but I can tell you that I have never touched the stuff."

Murphy escaped jail time and was sentenced to three months of probation in October. He'll release his tenth studio album, tentatively titled Lion, in 2014. The album was produced by Youth and is projected to be completed by year's end.

Earlier in the year, Peter Murphy guested on the new Dark Flowers album. Stream the track "Clean Break" from the album below:

R.E.M. guitarist, Peter Buck announced a Detroit area date - he's playing the Magic Bag in Ferndale on February 21st. Alejandro Escovedo is also performing at the Magic Bag that night.  Grab tickets here.

Peter Buck released his debut solo album last year as a limited edition vinyl pressing and is expected to release a follow up to that soon. Like the first record, the new record is likely going to be a vinyl only release - he told Salon earlier this year that he enjoys releasing music that way.

"...honestly, when I download a record, do I really care about it as much as if I’ve gone somewhere and actually walked a mile? So if you want my record you either have to write away to order it or you have to drive or walk somewhere to pick it up. I mean there’s less than 6,000. I’m not going to sell a million records."

Kim Shattuck, who had been playing bass on tour with the Pixies for the past few months announced on Twitter yesterday that she's no longer going to be performing with the band.

So far the Pixies haven't commented on Shattuck's departure, and the rumor mill is churning away at full speed. It's important to note that Shattuck never officially joined the Pixies - months ago the Pixies reported Shattuck as would be performing bass and backing vocals on tour, but never called her an official member of the Pixies. The Pixies have made several comments in interviews over the past few months stating that original bassist Kim Deal was always welcome to come back, and Shattuck's departure leaves fans wondering if Deal will be returning.

The Pixies hit the road in North America in January, so they'll likely be making some announcement regarding who will be playing bass shortly.

Morrissey confirmed that he'll perform at this year's Nobel Peace Prize event December 11th in Oslo, Norway. The performance will be Morrissey's first live appearance since his ill-fated North American tour which was axed in March. Moz is set to perform three songs at the event. Previous Nobel Peace Prize concerts have been broadcast live to 130 countries including the United States and Canada, so it's likely fans across the globe will be able to watch Morrissey's grand return to the stage. More details are expected closer to the show. More info on the concert is posted here.

Morrissey has a busy December - besides the Nobel Peace Prize gig, his book Autobiography is out in North America on December 3rd; a hardcover version of Autobiography will be published in the U.K. December 5th; and he's releasing a live cover of Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" as a digital download on December 5th.

Shirley Manson was honored November 23rd at the Tartan Clefs (aka Scottish Music Awards) with the Innovation Award and later performed with Goodbye Mr Mackenzie’s Martin Metcalfe for the first time in 20 years [Manson was a member of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie before forming Angelfish, and later, Garbage]. Together Manson and Metcalfe paid tribute to Lou Reed with a cover of "Candy Says" and also performed the Angelfish song "Sleep With Me."

Other Tartan Clefs winners include Camera Obscura, Mogwai, and Twin Atlantic.  The annual awards ceremony recognizes musical achievement and doubles as a fundraising event - this year proceeds from the ceremony helped raise funds for Nordoff Robins Music Therapy charity. Pictures from the event are posted over at Herald Scotland.

Watch video featuring part of Manson and Metcalfe's performance below:

Bono, the Edge, and Nile Rodgers rocked out a few funky covers last night at the Project (RED) auction afterparty in New York City. Watch the Bono & the gang cover David Bowie, Daft Punk, and Chic below via Annie Zaleski.

The Project (RED) auction was organized in part by Bono and raised an estimated 26 million dollars to benefit victims of AIDS in Africa . FYI: the item that fetched the most money was a white Steinway piano - Bono and Coldplay's Chris Martin performed two songs on the instrument which later was auctioned for $1.6 million. Read a full report on last night's auction here. Check out Martin and Bono performing a cover of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" and a snippet of U2's "Beautiful Day" below:

Athens electro project X-Radio-X released a trio of albums on Bandcamp this month, including a free download album titled Igniis Fatuus.  The leadoff song on Igniis Fatuus is "Kyoto Minimal" - a song that isn't technically a remix of the Cure's "Kyoto Song" but it might as well be.  The song includes the melody of the Head on the Door track plus features samples of Robert Smith's vocals. Stream "Kyoto Minimal" below and download it for free (along with the rest of X-Radio-X's catalog) on Bandcamp:

Because why not, check out a live version of the Cure's "Kyoto Song" with a montage of cool Robert Smith pics below:

Black Friday Record Store Day is almost upon us. Might be a good time to take a look through the special releases available for November 29th and map out your plan of attack. Some of the highlights include U2's "Ordinary Love" 10" single, Duran Duran's No Ordinary ep (a three song acoustic session recorded in 1993), Nirvana's In Utero 2013 mix cut to copper plates, and a Nick Lowe Quality Street 12" picture disc. Several other releases will be available as Record Store Day First releases (indie-stores will have these releases two months before other retailers) including remastered albums from the Clash (available individually on cd and vinyl), a Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds live album (on cd and vinyl), and two classic albums available on vinyl for the first time ever--the Replacements' All Shook Down and Failure's Magnified.

The full list of Black Friday and Record Store Day First releases is posted here. A list of participating record stores is posted here. It's also important to note that not every participating record store will stock every exclusive release, so it might be a good idea to contact stores ahead of Black Friday to save time.

To the haters: obviously it's a great idea to support independent record stores throughout the year, but if it takes limited edition releases to get fans out to record stores, what's the problem?

OMD posted an update on drummer Malcolm Holmes, who suffered cardiac issues after experiencing severe heat exhaustion while on tour in Toronto on July 19th:

"Malcolm's recovery continues slowly but surely. He is now driving, which makes life a little easier. The doctor says 6-12 months for him to be as fully recovered as he can be. Once again he thanks everyone for their continued good wishes"

After the July incident, OMD canceled all touring plans in 2013 to allow Holmes to recover. Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys recently announced a one-off show March 22nd, 2014 at the Night of the Proms festival in Poland.

Ran into an excellent song today from a darkwavish New York band called Suntalk. Their impressive debut single "Darkness" is available now as a single download on Bandcamp and will also be released on the Darkness EP in January. If the rest of Suntalk's music is like "Darkness" I predict big things for these guys. Stream "Darkness" below and download it from Bandcamp.  Catch up with Suntalk on Facebook.

Note: There has been some confusion behind today's DEMF announcement because over the years many people have been incorrectly referring to the annual Movement Festival as the DEMF. The annual Hart Plaza festival on Memorial Day weekend was originally called DEMF when it began in 2000, but after a few years (change in organizers, legal issues, and other city of Detroit drama) the festival was re-named Movement. Though many people have continued to refer to Movement as DEMF they are NOT the same thing. Movement Detroit is organized by Paxahau Event Productions, and the DEMF is organized by Carol Marvin (who was previously involved in the original DEMF festival at Hart Plaza and has retained the rights to the DEMF name).

Detroit gets two techno festivals in 2014 - the annual Movement Festival takes place Memorial Day weekend (May 24 - May 26) at Hart Plaza, and as announced earlier this morning, DEMF returns for the first time since 2002 to celebrate Detroit's 313th birthday (celebrating the 313 in the 313). DEMF takes place July 4th through July 6th and will actually be two simultaneous techno festivals - the free version of DEMF takes place at Campus Martius, and a paid version which has been named FEMT (Federation of Electronic Music Technology) takes place inside Ford Field. The lineup for DEMF/FEMT has not been announced yet other than Underground Resistance, Model 500, and Cybotron, which will be the legendary project's first live appearance ever!  Pre-sale tickets for FEMT are on sale now - there's a three day package for $250 and a three day VIP package for $1200.  General onsale is Friday, November 22nd and three day passes increase to $300; VIP passes increase to $1500, so get in on the pre-sale to save some money.  More info on DEMF/FEMT will be announced shortly, so it's not a bad idea to keep the DEMF Facebook page handy.

As previously announced, tickets for Movement went on sale last month.  Visit the official Movement Detroit website and Movement Detroit Facebook page for more info (official website was down earlier, may want to try again shortly).

Industrial kings Skinny Puppy released their excellent album Weapon back in May, and this week they premiered the official video for the latest single "illisiT."  The video was directed by graphic artist Jason Alacrity (the man behind industrial/EDM project The Alacrity) and has a bit of everything you'd expect from a Skinny Puppy video: dark and textured graphic scenes, plenty of blood and gore, and even a few insects. Check out the awesomeness below:

Skinny Puppy hit the road for a tour of North America in 2014. Though Ogre recently revealed he has an allergy to red dye (apparently it makes him hoarse if he swallows it), Ogre confirmed his allergy isn't going to prevent Skinny Puppy from using blood on their tour.

Morrissey posted a new essay for True To You titled The World Won't Listen. The lengthy essay mostly attacks the recent celebrities who have proudly killed animals for sheer enjoyment. He also gives props at the end to Russell Brand, endorsing his view on voting and lamenting the end to thoughtful debate, calling the U.K. a "cabbagebrain" nation. Read the full essay over at True To You.
