Morrissey was recently interviewed by the Australian paper Courier Mail.  Like most of Moz's recent interviews, it was conducted via email.  Morrissey explained to the paper that he does that now (post-NME libel drama) so his words can not be taken out of context:

"I had to pay legal fees of over $150,000 in order to get the NME to apologise. That incident just about turned me off for life, as you can imagine."

Morrissey also made a brief comment about Coachella's offer to the Smiths:

"Fascinatingly they made it clear that they would 'not require' the Smiths' bass player or drummer ... which I thought certainly said something."

Other topics of discussion: Morrissey still doesn't have a record deal, still hates the Royal Family (wasn't surprised about Prince Harry's Las Vegas incident because "he's always been an absolute idiot"), loves Russell Brand (but not his films), prefers Twitter over Facebook, and revealed his favorite recent-ish songs were "Lonely Day" by System of a Down and "Born That Way" by James Maker.

On Monday, Strand Bookstore in New York City sent out this tweet:

At first, it seemed kind of a far-fetched story, but apparently it was true! Queerty reports that Morrissey was in the store minding his own business looking at photography books when suddenly an elderly lady collapsed nearby. Queerty's source reports Moz rushed over to her, but it turned out she was fine:

"He picked up her stray belongings and asked if he could get her some water or call for help. She declined and collected her things and moved on...He seemed very shaken up and flustered by the incident and left the store soon afterwards without buying anything."

Read the full report in Queerty.

Tickets for most of the shows (including the October 26th stop at the Whiting Auditorium in Flint) are available here.

A scan of a letter Morrissey (aka Steve Morrissey) wrote the Melody Maker in 1976 titled 'Ramones are rubbish' has been unearthed by the WFMU blog and is up for sale on Ebay.  Morrissey called the Ramones a "bumptious band of degenerate no-talents," and wished they would just go away, or at least be forgotten.  Take a look at a scan of the letter here (the very bottom of the letter reads "LP winner" in bold, so it appears Morrissey won an LP from the magazine for his entry.  Oooh, I just wonder what album he won, don't you?) The text is transcribed below:

The Ramones are the latest bumptious band of degenerate no-talents whose most notable achievement to date is their ability to advance beyond the boundaries of New York City, and purely on the strength of a spate of convincing literature projecting the Ramones as God's gift to rock music.

They have been greeted with instant adulation by an army of duped fans.  Musically, they do not deal in subtlety or variation of any kind, their rule is to be as incompetent as possible.

For a band believed to project the youth of America, New York suburban life, anti-conformism, sex and struggle, or whatever, they fail miserably.  And in the sober light of day their imperfections have a field day.

The Ramones make the Stooges sound like concertmasters, and I feel that the only place for their notoriously discordant music is the sweaty downtown Manhattan dives to which they are no doubt accustomed.

The New York Dolls and Patti Smith have proved that there is some life pumping away in the swamps and gutters of New York, and they are the only acts which originated from the N.Y. club scene worthy of any praise.  The Ramones have absolutely nothing to add that is of relevance or importance and should be rightly filed or forgotten.

Updated info posted below:

Peter Hook and his band The Light have been performing Joy Division albums in full on the road over the last couple of years. Hook is now upping the ante (and stirring the New Order cauldron) with this announcement on Twitter earlier today:

Hoo boy! What's Bernard Sumner and the gang going to say about this? Stay tuned for the drama, because you KNOW there will be drama!

Update:  Peter Hook has announced details for two shows where he'll play Movement + Power, Corruption & Lies in full.  Tickets for both shows will go on sale September 25th:

January 17th @ Koko in London
January 18th @ Manchester Cathedral in Manchester

Meanwhile, Peter Hook is preparing to release his Joy Division memoir Unknown Pleasures - Inside Joy Division in the U.K. on September 27th.  The book will be released in North America later this year - Amazon has a December 1st listing for the paperback and January 29th listing for the hardcover edition.

Wendy James, ex-vocalist for Transvision Vamp, has recorded a double single with the Stooges' James Williamson and the Bad Seeds' Jim Sclavunos.  The A-side is a cover of "You're So Great" (originally by Sonic's Rendezvous Band) and is backed with a cover of Bob Dylan's "It's Alright Ma." The songs are a taste of what's to come from James' new solo album, which is currently in the works.

James decided to cover Sonic's Rendezvous Band because she's been a big fan of the Stooges and Fred 'Sonic' Smith for years:

"I got my chops singing hard and fast pop songs with Transvision Vamp, and when I heard "You're So Great," it viscerally hit me that Fred 'Sonic' Smith had written the complete essence of what I was good at. I stored the song in the back of my mind, and waited for the right moment to record it. When I met James Williamson the dots connected and we decided instantly to go and do this together... he represents Detroit and Ann Arbor, no-one captures the guitar sound of Michigan like James Williamson does. It's obvious. It was just a question of who was going to shout '1,2,3,4.....'"

A release date for the double single will be announced shortly. In the meantime, both songs are available to stream - "You're So Great" is posted here and "It's Alright Ma" is streaming here.

The original version of "You're So Great" by Sonic's Rendezvous Band is posted below:

AV Club recently posted a feature article titled "Where to start with the enigmatic music known as shoegaze." The article attempts to offer up some choice albums to start with if you are somehow unfamiliar with the genre and are interested in delving in - classic albums from Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Swervedriver, Slowdive, and Chapterhouse are all mentioned and discussed briefly.

Fans who are well aware of shoegaze and its awesomeness still have a great reason to click on over to the article - the comments section. Though there TONS of comments, it's well worth taking the time to scroll through them - many great albums are mentioned, plus there are some other entertaining topics discussed, including what shouldn't be classified as shoegaze.

Other great resources for shoegaze music include Dean Bromley's daily shoegaze/dreampop newspaper and if you're on Twitter, be sure to follow the Shoegaze Collective for tons of links to old and new shoegaze artists from around the world.

Meanwhile, ahead of last weekend's gig at Chicago's Riot Fest, bassist Mike Watt confirmed with Rolling Stone that new Stooges material is in the works:

"I'll tell you this: James Williamson a few months ago had me put bass on nine songs that he gave to Ig [Iggy Pop] and Ig is writing up words...so I just know there are new tunes and in fact in November he wants me to do some more. I don't know about some album or whatever or what the plan is with that stuff, but very interesting."

Music fans in the Detroit area probably know who Hobey Echlin is - back in the 1990's Echlin played bass in the brilliant shoegazey band Majesty Crush (listen to Majesty Crush here and purchase here).  After disbanding, the members of Majesty Crush went their separate ways and Echlin moved out west to focus on a career in journalism.  Which brings us to this awesome video...

Earlier today Echlin dug into his interview archives and uploaded partial video of his 2001 visit with New Order in Manchester.  For the interview, Echlin drove out to drummer Stephen Morris' countryside home and met up with New Order.  Though the actual interview video hasn't been posted (Echlin promises he'll upload clips of the interview soon), he did post some awesome footage of himself playing "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on Peter Hook's bass, IN FRONT OF PETER HOOK HIMSELF.  Hilarity ensues when Hooky tells him he's doing it wrong, then takes the bass and schools him.  Watch the awesomeness unfold below:

Back in July a list of Depeche Mode 2013 tour dates were making the rounds on the internet, only to be shot down a few days later by Jonathan Kessler, the band's manager, as "not confirmed." Kessler went on to state that Depeche Mode would indeed be touring in 2013 and info would be revealed in the fall.  Well, it's almost the fall, right?

New reports are circulating which indicate the 2013 tour info will be announced at a press conference in Paris on October 23rd, and information on the band's forthcoming album will also be revealed at that time. The press conference has not been confirmed by any of the usual sources, so for now, it's just a rumor.

Noel Gallagher's guitar case caused major panic on Sunday!  According to a BBC report, a "huge black spider with green fangs" escaped from one of Noel's guitar cases as it was being unloaded backstage for the Jersey Live festival. Mass hysteria ensued and the backstage area of the festival was quarantined for around 20 minutes as representatives from a nearby conservation group were called over to capture the spider before sending it away for analysis.  Interestingly enough, Gallagher himself wasn't around for all the drama.  Hmmmmm...

Mystery Machine are back with a new album! It's been a LONG time since we've heard new music from this fantastic Vancouver band - their last album, Headfirst Into Everything, was released back in 1998. The new album, Western Magnetics, is a collection of material recorded over a span of about 10 years, and it's a swoon-worthy mix of shoegaze and guitar rock.  But don't take my word for it - take a listen right now for yourself. Western Magnetics is streaming in its entirety over at Exclaim!

Western Magnetics will be released digitally and as a physical cd through Sonic Unyon on September 11th.  Pre-order directly from Sonic Unyon here.

Mystery Machine are hitting the road for a short Canadian tour around the album's release. Dates are posted below and more dates are likely to be announced in the coming weeks.

09/14 St Catharines ON - The Mansion House w/Sianspheric, Kestrels
09/15 Hamilton, ON - Supercrawl

Toy drop their debut album later this month and the full record is streaming ahead of its release.  Visit Toy's official site to listen to their self-titled album in its entirety, plus there are also a variety of links to pre-order the album in the U.K. (album drops on cd, vinyl, and as a digital album on September 10th.)  Fans in the U.K. may also want to consider buying from Rough Trade - they are selling a version that comes along with a bonus six-track disc Toy - Live at the BBC.

Fans in the U.S. will have to wait until September 25th for Toy to arrive on cd, but a double vinyl version will be released September 11th.  So far North American digital retailers (iTunes and Amazon's mp3 store) don't have a listing for the album, but even though this story turned out to be fake, it's probably best to buy physical product anyway!

Radiohead fans who enjoyed the band's debut album Pablo Honey will want to take a look at the video posted below.  It's footage from Radiohead's very first U.S. tour - during the summer of 1993 the band were on the road promoting the newly released Pablo Honey.  The tour brought them stateside for about 20-25 dates (including a Detroit date July 1st at St. Andrew's Hall).  Now video from their June 30th 1993 concert at the Metro in Chicago has appeared on You Tube via Dangerous Minds.  Watch the young Radiohead rip through a 12 song set, plus there's a short interview with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood at the end of the video.  Enjoy!
