Watch Michael Stipe cover "Pale Blue Eyes" in unreleased 1983 film 'Just Like A Movie'

In 1983 photographer Laura Levine flew to Athens, Georgia to shoot an improvisational film with friends to document a place and time she felt would not exist for much longer.  R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, appeared in the black and white Super 8 film singing a cover of Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes" (the cover had been recorded earlier in the day on a Walkman and featured Matthew Sweet on guitar). As it turned out, the film, titled Just Like A Movie, was never released. Due to the recent passing of Lou Reed, those involved with the project felt it was an appropriate time to share the excerpt featuring "Pale Blue Eyes" as a tribute. Watch it below via REM HQ.

Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins forms Snowbird

Cocteau Twins' Simon Raymonde has formed a new project with vocalist Stephanie Dosen titled Snowbird. The first single, "Porcelain" instantly brings to mind Raymonde's old band, and according to the official Snowbird press release the band is ready for the comparisons. Raymonde states: "It would be a little odd if it didn’t remind people of Cocteau Twins."

Jane's Addiction rock out on Jimmy Kimmel

Last Wednesday, Jane's Addiction played a four song concert for Jimmy Kimmel Live. The late night program ended up airing part of the performance on last night's show, and another song was also uploaded on You Tube for fans to enjoy . During the intro to "Stop!" Kimmel told the crowd Jane's Addiction is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Nothing's Shocking. Interestingly enough, of the songs Kimmel aired and uploaded, none of them were from Nothing's Shocking: "Stop!" and "Three Days" are from Ritual De Lo Habitual, and "Another Soulmate," is the band's most recent single. Jane's Addiction did play "Ocean Size" from Nothing's Shocking, but unfortunately, the show has not made that performance available to view. Still, it's super awesome Kimmel featured Jane's Addiction on the program, so enjoy the three song archive below.

Awesome: Mariachi Mexteca ft Hugh Cornwell "Golden Brown"

As previously reported in October, ex-Stranglers vocalist Hugh Cornwell released a four song ep for his new single, "God Is A Woman." The God Is A Woman EP includes the single, two live tracks and Mariachi Mexteca's version of the Stranglers' classic "Golden Brown" featuring Cornwell on vocals.  The mariachi version of "Golden Brown" is FANTASTIC--the song lends itself so well to the mariachi guitar stylings, it's almost better than the original Stranglers' version, or perhaps, is equally as awesome as the original. The Mariachi Mexteca version of "Golden Brown" is available to download digitally from Amazon and iTunes.

Morrissey treated in Los Angeles hospital for concussion & whiplash

According to True To You, Morrissey was involved in some kind of misfortune and wound up in the hospital. He was treated at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and has now been discharged. From the posting, it sounds as if he was involved in some type of moving vehicle accident, though few details were shared. Read the posting below:

Morrissey has now been discharged from Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles following treatment for concussion, whiplash and an arm injury. Morrissey would like to thank the medical staff at Cedars-Sinai for their "outstanding level of care and attention"

Thomas Dolby show scheduled for Royal Oak Music Theater moved to Magic Bag

Thomas Dolby brings his Invisible Lighthouse Live tour to the Detroit area on Sunday, November 3rd. The show was originally scheduled at the Royal Oak Music Theater, but was just moved to the Magic Bag in Ferndale. See the tweet below for more info:

Rhino Records releasing 8 disc boxset 'Pogues 30'

Rhino Records is releasing an eight disc Pogues boxset on December 2nd. Pogues 30 includes seven of the band's studio albums along with a previously released live disc featuring Joe Strummer on vocals. The Second Disc reports that the studio albums in the boxset do not include the bonus tracks released on the remasters Rhino released in 2006, however the live disc will likely be incentive enough for fans to pony up the cash for the new boxset. So far the collection doesn't have a North American release date, but it will be available on import after the U.K. release in December. Read more about Pogues 30 here.

Neil Young & John McEnroe guest on new Chrissie Hynde LP

Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders was honored with the Q Classic Songwriter Award at the Q Awards on October 23rd. During one of her post-award interviews Hynde revealed that she's just finished work on a new album with Peter, Bjorn, & John's Björn Yttling. Hynde also said Neil Young and tennis star John McEnroe (McEnroe plays guitar) guest on the new album. No release date has been announced, but Hynde said the album is finished and should be out soon. The legendary Lou Reed dies at 71

Hard to even type the words, but the legendary and visionary artist Lou Reed has died today at the age of 71. The cause of death has not been reported, however Reed had undergone a liver transplant earlier this year and several reports seem to indicate he died from complications of the transplant. Reed's final goodbye was posted on his Facebook/Twitter account this morning at 6:53 AM, which was a photo titled "The Door."  Reed is survived by his wife Laurie Anderson.

Velvet Underground, led by Reed, was one of the most influential bands in history. As Greg Kot, writer for the Chicago Tribune stated today, the Velvet Underground directly influenced more music in the last 40 years than any rock band. And it'd be hard to argue with that statement.

It was once said that only 30 thousand copies of Velvet Underground's debut album Velvet Underground & Nico, were sold in the first few years after its release, but all 30 thousand people in possession of the album went on to form bands. Though the record certainly wasn't a commercial success, it was an album ahead of its time, and 40 years later, the album is widely considered one of the most important, influential, and greatest albums ever. The subsequent VU records are also held in high esteem in the world of music, as are many of Reed's solo albums, particularly his rock opera Berlin (Lulu, not so much).

The world has indeed lost a true legend.  R.I.P. Lou Reed. :(

Many artists have spent the day paying tribute to Reed. Spin compiled tweets & Facebook postings from John Cale, David Bowie, Kim Gordon, and others here. Meanwhile, Morrissey posted comments about the passing of Reed on his official site. Even the Vatican (or at least Cardinal Ravasi) feels the great loss of Reed:
