It's been out of print for quite a while, but soon a pretty sweet Sonic Youth compilation will get a new lease on life. Hits Are For Squares is a collection of Sonic Youth songs compiled by musical luminaries such as Eddie Vedder, Radiohead, Beck, Flea, Mike D, the Flaming Lips, and others. You can check out the tracklisting here. Hits Are For Squares will drop August 23rd.

John Lydon's London home was recently ruined by fire. The fire was believed to be started by a malfunctioning clothes dryer. Lydon's wife was at home when the fire broke out, luckily she was able to escape unharmed. Unfortunately the Lydon's million dollar plus home wasn't insured! Read about the drama here.

MTV's old school alternative video show, 120 Minutes, is set to return to MTV2 next Saturday night. The show originally aired in the late 80's all the way through the early 2000's, and was finally axed after MTV became a reality show network. At any rate, the show will be resurrected and will air on MTV2 on the last Saturday of every month. The first episode is set to air Saturday night (well, really Sunday morning at 1am--so it's on Saturday night/Sunday morning), and will be hosted by Matt Pinfield. This Saturday's episode will feature interviews with David Grohl, Dangermouse & Daniele Luppi, Kings of Leon, PJ Harvey, Sleigh Bells, and more. 120 Minutes will also be available to view on MTV.com.

This weekend Gallagher has been posting some photos from the video shoot, plus he's posted the strings and vocal parts for another new song "Everybody's On the Run." The full cd, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will be released on November 8th.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds released a trailer for the band's first video, "the Death of You & Me." The full video is set to premiere on Noel's website Monday morning, and the single will be available starting August 21st. The full length self-titled cd will be released November 8th in the U.S. (it comes out October 17th in the U.K.).

Radiohead's The King of Limbs--From the Basement is set to air on Palladia this Saturday at 9pm. Then Saturday, July 30th the broadcast will air on MTV2. From the Basement was recorded about a month ago and had been posted on YouTube. Most of the video segments of the performance were pulled off YouTube, but a few audio segments are still up there (for the time being).

Beady Eye will return to North America later this year for a tour. The full tour itinerary is available here (no Detroit date, sadly).
The guys in Beady Eye are all huge football fans and were thrilled to make a video to help promote the new uniform the Manchester City team will sport during the 2011/2012 season. Check out the video below for a glimpse of the new shirt, before Beady Eye launches into a medley of Manchester City's anthem, "Blue Moon" and the band's latest single, "the Beat Goes On."

A storm was to blame for a stage that collapsed this afternoon at the Ottawa Bluesfest in Vancouver. According to reports, Cheap Trick had been about 20 minutes into their set when the stage collapsed, leaving one injured. Luckily no one was trapped underneath the stage and organizers were able to evacuate the area. Death Cab For Cutie had been scheduled to play after Cheap Trick, however due to the nature of the situation, the rest of the evening's events have been canceled. Nick Harmer from Death Cab tweeted out a picture of the collapsed stage which you can check out here.

Rhino will be giving the entire Jesus & Mary Chain catalog the reissue treatment! The band's six studio cds will be released as expanded 2 cd/dvd sets which will come along with 32 page booklets. The cds will be reissued in stages: Psychocandy and Darklands will be released September 19th, on September 26th Automatic and Honey's Dead will drop, and finally Stoned & Dethroned and Munki wrap things up on October 3rd. Morrissey fansite true-to-you.net is reporting that the Man, the Myth, the Legend got attacked by a dog in the U.K. recently! He fractured his right index finger and sustained other injuries to his hand and arm. According to reports Moz is ok and is in great spirits (not sure about the dog). Read about the sordid tale here.

Noel Gallagher has revealed details about his forthcoming debut cd. Noel's band is called Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and the cd will be self-titled: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. The cd features 10 songs, including "the Death of You & Me" (song title was previously revealed by a video production company). The full cd is set to drop on October 17th worldwide (probably October 18th in North America) and the band will kick off a tour in October. Noel also revealed that he has another full cd already in the can and he'll release that next year. The second cd was a collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous.
The entire press conference will be posted later on Noel's newly launched website & also his YouTube channel.

Rumors are swirling that Noel Gallagher will be holding a press conference this Wednesday (July 6th) to announce details about his forthcoming solo cd. Last month a video production company revealed they had worked on the video for Gallagher's alleged solo single, "the Death of You & Me" though Gallagher never confirmed this information.

Bjork's new cd/multimedia project Biophilia will drop later this year. Apparently we now know why Bjork has been tweeting pictures of crystals over the past couple of days. Her new single, "Crystalline" is posted below, and the single will be officially released on June 30th.

Before there was Nirvana, there was Mudhoney! A documentary on the band Mudhoney, I'm Now, is in the works and is expected to be screened late this summer or early fall. Trent Reznor has been working on a miniseries based on the Nine Inch Nails cd titled Year Zero. The 2007 concept cd was written while Reznor was on the road supporting With Teeth. The miniseries will reportedly be a continuation of Reznor's sci-fi vision of the year 2022. The Hollywood Reporter just revealed Jim Uhls, who worked on Fight Club, will be writing the screenplay for the project, which is currently being developed by HBO & BBC.

This September marks the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's legendary cd, Nevermind. In celebration of this important milestone, a special deluxe edition is set to be released. The 4 CD/1 DVD set will include previously unreleased recordings, rarities, b-sides, and more while the DVD will feature an unreleased concert. The deluxe edition of Nevermind will drop September 19th. Nevermind was originally released September 24th, 1991.

Erasure is set to release a new cd and hit the road in the coming months. The new disc is titled Tomorrow's World and an official release date is still to be announced, though the band confirms it will be out this fall. The band's 25 date North American tour kicks off August 31st in Tampa, and of course there's no Detroit date (boo, hiss) however you can check out the itinerary here.

Robert Smith from the Cure has posted a collection of songs titled "Reflections" on Soundcloud. According to Smith, these were songs he (and presumably the band) listened to while on the road driving around in a van back in the day. Noel Gallagher is getting married to his long time girlfriend Sara MacDonald today. As expected, Liam Gallagher will not be attending the gala since he's stateside playing a few gigs with Beady Eye. Liam, however, alleges that he was not even invited to the wedding.
If you're a fan of Oasis, Beady Eye or the Gallagher brothers, why not check out a pretty lengthy interview with Beady Eye in the Chicago Sun Times here. Liam discussed Oasis, the infamous fight that split the band, and the future. I particularly enjoyed the comments Liam made about Oprah: "what's this about Oprah retiring? She needs to stay on it. She needs the (vitamin) B-12."

Apparently the Senate Judiciary Committee has approved the Commercial Felony Streaming Act and now the full Senate will consider this. The Act appears to be targeting sites that stream films, however music sites and music blogs that stream illegally won't be immune if the act passes.

Morrissey debuted three new songs on Janice Long's show on BBC Radio. Check out "Action is My Middle Name" "the Kid's a Looker" and "People Are the Same Everywhere" below. No word on when we'll hear the full length new record, which features 10 new songs. Morrissey said the cd is finished but he doesn't have a record deal at the moment, so stay tuned.

I've been listening to a lot of Depeche Mode lately. Last week I checked out the band's new remix collection, Remixes 2 81-11. On disc #3 of the set is Royksopp's remix of the song "Puppets" and when I heard it I had forgotten how much I loved that song. I hunted down the original version of "Puppets" on the band's debut cd Speak & Spell and I've been listening to that cd over the past couple of days. The cd indeed sounds dated--it came out in 1981 and featured songwriting by Vince Clarke (who left the band after the cd's release to start up Yaz with Alison Moyet).
I thought it would be fun to post the band's official video for their debut single, "Dreaming of Me" so I scoured YouTube to find it. I didn't find it, but I did stumble upon the gem I posted below. It's live footage of Depeche Mode performing "Dreaming of Me" circa 1981. The audio isn't the best, but it's sooooooo awesome to see the young whippersnappers perform. Oh, and the reel to reel player behind David Gahan is a nice touch.

It looks like the streaming music service Spotify is going to launch in the United States. The company has been operating overseas for a couple of years and now it appears to be coming our way. Spotify is different from Amazon's cloud and the soon-to-launch Apple service (iCloud) because with Spotify you get to stream music you don't already own. Reportedly Spotify has not yet struck deals with all the major label, but allegedly are in talks with all the labels. Read all about it here.

REM's cd, Life's Rich Pageant, is set to be reissued July 12th. The 25th anniversary version of the cd will feature all the original songs remastered, plus 19 previously unreleased demos, a poster, postcards and more. If you were ever into the shoegaze music scene back in the early 1990's, you're probably familiar with the band Ride and their legendary label Creation Records. A documentary about the label, Upside Down: Story of Creation Records, was just released in the U.K, and the label's founder, Alan McGee, has been doing a lot of publicity for the release. He recently wrote a piece about Ride for Rhino Records, who released a 20th anniversary edition of Ride's classic cd, Nowhere. Check out the piece, "Alan McGee on Ride" here. What's interesting is McGee declares Ride's classic song, "Leave Them All Behind" and "D'You Know What I Mean" by Oasis to conceptually be the same song. Check out both songs below and see what you think. Unfortunately the version of "Leave Them All Behind" is an edit of the powerful 8 minute album version, but hopefully you'll get the picture.

David Gahan and Warped Tour organizer Kevin Lyman were honored last night for several years of sobriety at the 7th annual MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert. The annual concert raises money for MusiCares, which provides musicians access to addiction recovery. Gahan, introduced by Steven Tyler, spoke at the event, then later performed a set of covers. Martin Gore joined Gahan onstage to perform the Depeche Mode classic, "Personal Jesus." Jane's Addiction and Paramore also performed live sets. An Elliott Smith documentary is set to debut at a film festival in Los Angeles soon. Read an interview with the film's director, Gil Reyes here. Interestingly, Smith's music does not appear in the documentary. His family did not grant permission for the music to be used because the film included Smith's girlfriend, Jennifer Chiba. Chiba was involved in the open investigation into Smith's death which was initially reported as suicide and later questions were raised about possible homicide. The Pixies were in town Friday at the Fox Theater. If you missed it, music legend SW3000 wrote an exclusive review of the show. Here it is:
Show was great. They sounded a hundred times better than they did at the state when I saw them 5-6 years ago. Not sure if it was the venue or that they've been playing together again for so long now. Couple highlights: Frank's (or Black's I'm not sure what name he's using now) was awesome. He can still do all the screams. And Joey's guitaring was cool. They started out with 4 b-sides and then they did the whole Doolittle album from 1-15 right in a row. Stuff I really liked from Doolittle: Tame, Dead, #13 Baby, There goes my gun. Then they left and came back for an encore.
Highlights of the encore were Umass and Into the white and for that song they had a fog machine so you couldn't see the band for most of the song. Then they wrapped it up with Where is my mind and Gigantic.
Sound was great at the fox I really have no complaints other than I thought the drums could be a little louder. There's two things I can criticize, one was the length of the show. I think the total length of playing was probably less than an 1:30. I just saw a bunch of almost 60 year olds (rush) and they played for over two hours. They could easily have played for 2 hours, it's not like they're lacking for material. Also Kim Deal did all the chatting between songs. Frank didn't say one thing, which I thought was kind of annoying. Anyways it was cool.

Show was great. They sounded a hundred times better than they did at the state when I saw them 5-6 years ago. Not sure if it was the venue or that they've been playing together again for so long now. Couple highlights: Frank's (or Black's I'm not sure what name he's using now) was awesome. He can still do all the screams. And Joey's guitaring was cool. They started out with 4 b-sides and then they did the whole Doolittle album from 1-15 right in a row. Stuff I really liked from Doolittle: Tame, Dead, #13 Baby, There goes my gun. Then they left and came back for an encore.
Highlights of the encore were Umass and Into the white and for that song they had a fog machine so you couldn't see the band for most of the song. Then they wrapped it up with Where is my mind and Gigantic.
Sound was great at the fox I really have no complaints other than I thought the drums could be a little louder. There's two things I can criticize, one was the length of the show. I think the total length of playing was probably less than an 1:30. I just saw a bunch of almost 60 year olds (rush) and they played for over two hours. The BBC's John Wilson had the rare opportunity to interview Morrissey yesterday. They discussed the legacy of the Smiths and talked about Morrissey's solo work. Morrissey also explained why song titles are more important than the songs themselves, nixed the idea of a Smiths reunion, and revealed he's written his autobiography. According to Moz, the autobiography is in the "redrafting" stage, and may be out as early as next year. Listen to the entire 13 minute interview here.

A Ministry documentary that has been years in the making finally premiered at a film festival in Chicago on Thursday, but it wasn't without controversy. Fix: the Ministry Movie's director has been involved in a legal battle with Ministry kingpin Al Jourgensen. Jourgensen was not in attendance at the premiere and was not a part of the Q & A session which followed the screening. Additionally Jourgensen also claims he was not invited to a WaxTrax! records two day celebration that was held this weekend in Chicago.

As it turns out, Los Angeles is the city that won the exclusive film premiere and concert from Social Distortion. But, the good news is that Social Distortion will be streaming the entire concert and Machine Gun Blues short film next Thursday, April 21st.

Radiohead will be one of many bands releasing something special for Record Store Day, which is this Saturday. The band will release a limited edition 12'' of "the Butcher" b/w "Supercollider" and you can hear a snippet of both songs here. This release will only be available in stores overseas (not in North America).

Soundgarden has announced some details/dates for an upcoming tour this summer. No Detroit date has been announced (yet) but more dates will be announced soon.
Meanwhile, if you're a fan, check out this article about Soundgarden's reunion. The band has revealed their original tweet in the early hours of January 2010 was mistaken (the tweet was sent out because they were only going to launch a new website, not reform).

Johnny Marr has officially left the Cribs. Here's a portion of the official statement posted on the band's official website:
So, as some of you may know by now The Cribs are gonna be a 3-piece again. That is a slightly less dramatic way of saying that Johnny Marr is no longer in the band. We don't want it to be seen as a split, that just has so many negative connotations and really doesn't represent the way everyone is feeling right now...
No one is down about this in our camp. It's actually the start of a really exciting phase for everyone. Johnny has gone back to The Healers and is writing a new record, and we are really honestly loving being back together as just 3 brothers literally playing in the basement/garage again. Right now we are in Portland and demoing in Gary's basement and it feels so liberating. We have a bunch of new songs and are embracing the lo-fi again. It never was about fancy studios and LA and all that. We are back in our usual environment and feeling good about it. We've got everything we need.

A documentary about Creation Records, Upside Down, will be released on DVD May 9th in the U.K. A two-disc soundtrack featuring bands signed to Creation will also be released May 9th. Some of the bands include Primal Scream, Swervedriver, Jesus & Mary Chain, Teenage Fanclub, Oasis, House of Love, Ride, Boo Radleys, and more. The entire tracklisting is available here, and you can watch the trailer for the film below. So far there is no official release date for the DVD or cd soundtrack in North America.

Trent Reznor has created a line of iPhone, iTouch, and Blackberry cases through Case Mate. A new case will be released each week and fans will have the opportunity (once all the cases are released) to customize the designs to create a unique case. British tabloid the Sun reported earlier today that the Stone Roses were reuniting. Now NME has gotten word from bassist Mani that the report in the Sun is false. Mani told NME John Squire and Ian Brown had met up recently--at the funeral for Mani's mother. Mani told NME, "Two old friends meeting up after 15 years to pay their respects to my mother does not consititue the reformation of the Stone Roses...it isn't true and isn't happening."

According to this article in British tabloid, the Sun, the Stone Roses are set to reunite. The band has refused to reunite in the past despite lucrative offers, so this news is pretty interesting.

Beady Eye (the new project featuring ex-members of Oasis) has recorded a Beatles song for charity. "Across the Universe" was recorded this weekend in a studio in London, and it's available now through the band's official website . All proceeds raised will go to the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal. Beady Eye performed a live version of "Across the Universe" last night at the Japan Disaster Benefit in London. Jane's Addiction is in South America for the Chilean version of Lollapalooza. During a radio interview to promote the event, the band debuted a brand new track live on the air. Back in February, Radiohead's new album, the King of Limbs was released digitally. Fans who preferred a physical version of the album were able to pre-order the "newspaper" version, which was (and still is) set to ship in May. For those that would like a cd or vinyl version of the King of Limbs (a physical version, but not the "newspaper" version) you'll be able to buy it in stores starting March 29th. In addition, select records stores globally will be giving away a Radiohead "newspaper" titled the Universal Sigh. The select locations are listed here, and no, there isn't a Detroit location. By the way, the Universal Sigh is not the same newspaper that will accompany the "newspaper" version of the King of Limbs. Sounds confusing? Click here for more info.

Soundgarden has teamed up with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock for the release of the Soundgarden's collection Telephantasm. Telephantasm is available bundled with copies of Guitar Hero this week. The collection will be available as a single cd (on its own without being tethered to Guitar Hero) starting October 5th.
