Good news for Placebo fans - new material is on the way!  In a posting on their official website, Placebo revealed they're "in a good creative place these days and ideas are flowing." The band is expected to release something new before the end of the year, with a full new album to be released around this time next year.

Placebo also announced they've partnered with Mercedes-Benz for a series of live intimate gigs to coincide with the launch of the new A class car.  The band will play five FREE live intimate shows (in Paris, Rome, Zurich, Hamburg, and Madrid) and tickets will be distributed to fans through online contesting.

The Black Keys have released a...let's just say...very interesting video for "Gold On The Ceiling."  The video was directed by Harmony Korine, who was the brains behind the 1995 film Kids.  Watch the befuddling video below:

Wowzers!  What was that???

The Black Keys are performing "Gold On The Ceiling" this Sunday night at the MTV Movie Awards and will be heading back on the road for another round of touring in July.
Metronomy recently recorded a live session at the Atlantic Records Studio in New York City.  The band performed "Everything Goes My Way," "The Bay," "The Look," and "She Wants," plus discussed the tracks in short interview segments. Watch the entire session (the four live tracks plus interview) here.

Metronomy's critically acclaimed album The English Riviera was released last year.

Last year Coldplay performed for students at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, U.K.  The concert below, Coldplay Live at the UAE - A Film For Oxfam, documents the band's intimate performance, which features mostly student filmed footage of the band along with some interview clips.  The film's director/producer, Robert Smith, uploaded the concert to raise awareness for Coldplay's summer's Oxfam funding campaign (donate here and find out more about the campaign here).

Martin Atkins is about to release another book about the music industry called Band:Smart, and has set up a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the project.  Atkins has lined up over 100 music industry insiders and offers up plenty of advice on what (and what not) to do to succeed in the biz.  Find out more about Band:Smart on Kickstarter here.

Atkins has written two other books on the music industry - Welcome To The Music Business...you're FUCKED! (grab a free download here) and Tour:Smart.  For those unfamiliar with Atkins, he was previously in Public Image Limited, Killing Joke, and Ministry (as well as other WaxTrax/Ministry related side projects) so it's fair to say he knows quite a bit about the music biz!

Atkins is throwing a free party on Monday, June 4th at the Double Door in Chicago to celebrate Band:Smart.  All donations from the party (there's an Invisible Records auction and Bleeding Heart Bakery will be selling goodies) will go to help fund the book.  Details on the June 4th event are available here.

Happy Birthday, to Paul Weller!

The legendary Weller, aka The Modfather, formed The Jam in 1976, abruptly ended the band (while still at the top of their game) in 1982, and went on to form another great band, the groove/soul-vibey project, The Style Council. In 1992 he launched his proper solo career with the release of his debut solo album Paul Weller, and he's still at it--he just released a new album, Sonik Kicks.

Weller is a true music visionary--he's enjoyed quite an amazing career and was honored with NME's Godlike Genius Award in 2010. Watch some video from Weller's remarkable career:

Supercool band alert!  Sky Between Leaves are a new alt-rock/Krautonica band from London.  They just released their debut single, "Sky Between Leaves" (yes, the band is named Sky Between Leaves and their new song is also titled "Sky Between Leaves" - Talk Talk did that too back in the day).

The single "Sky Between Leaves" is awesome - it features a mighty dance groove with shoegazer/dreampop vocals, plus if that wasn't cool enough, there's also a sample of Jarvis Cocker!  Fun fact: Sky Between Leaves named themselves after a comment Cocker made describing the first time he wore glasses - realizing that the holes in the trees were "the sky between the leaves."

Listen to the awesome "Sky Between Leaves" and download it from Soundcloud or Bandcamp

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the formation of The Smiths, a photo exhibition Manchester: So Much To Answer For opens next month at Proud Camden in London.  The exhibit opens June 1st, runs through July 15th, and features an impressive collection of photographs of The Smiths and the city of Manchester taken by Kevin Cummins.  Cummins is a renowned photographer who spent 10 years as chief photographer at NME, and over the years has shot many exceptional bands--Joy Division, The Clash, The Stone Roses, and of course, The Smiths.

Cummins spent a lot of time with the Smiths during their career--he took their publicity stills, traveled the world with the band, and filmed many of their live gigs.  Manchester: So Much To Answer For not only documents the Smiths and their exceptional career, but also features photos of Manchester - depicting the city's rise, fall, and aftermath. The exhibit is without question a MUST-see for Smiths' fans, and it's free!

The exhibit opens June 1st, but an exclusive launch party for Manchester: So Much To Answer For takes place the evening of May 31st.  The launch event kicks off at 6pm with a private viewing of the exhibit, then directly afterwards the party continues with live music all night, including a guest DJ set by Smiths' drummer Mike Joyce (he'll DJ from 9:35 - 11:35).  And you can WIN tickets to this awesome launch party!  Here's how:

To win tickets to the party send me a tweet that reads "Manchester So Much To Answer For" or send an email to hangthedjmag (at) gmail.com to enter.  The winners will be chosen on May 30th and will be contacted via Twitter or email.

The Stone Roses shocked and delighted fans today by announcing an impromptu FREE gig at the 1100 capacity Parr Hall in Warrington, England.  The band announced the show via Twitter, Facebook, and their official site a few hours before the show and fans were instructed where to go and what to bring in order to receive a wristband for the concert.

The Stone Roses kicked off their hour-long set with "I Wanna Be Adored," and ended with "Love Spreads."  Stunningly, they didn't dust off "I Am The Resurrection," and there was no encore.  Liam Gallagher was in attendance and was clearly impressed by the show.  He sent out the following two tweets while at the show: "Stone Roses are back" and "speechless."

Read NME's review of the show here and view some pictures from the gig here. The setlist is posted below:

Happy Birthday to Philip Selway, best known as Radiohead's drummer.   Selway is also busy with other projects--he released a solo album, Familial, in 2010 and over the years has spent a good deal of time helping out the suicide prevention group Samaritans.  Celebrate Selway's Big Day with some video:

Earlier this week, 8-bit versions of two Radiohead albums - OK Computer and Kid A - surfaced.  So far no official comment from the band about the 8-bit versions (they were created by a Radiohead fan), but considering Thom Yorke is rocking an Atari shirt in the Jools Holland/2001 concert posted above, it's highly likely he and the band will love these

According to a report in The Daily Express, the Brothers Gallagher (Liam and Noel) are once again in contact, and lawyers aren't even involved!  Both Liam and Noel were giddy as schoolgirls after their favorite football team Manchester City won the English Premier League title two weeks ago.  Their exuberance led to the breaking of the proverbial ice with a round of text messages:

“They were both over the moon when City won and messages were exchanged,” says a mutual pal. “It took something like that to break the ice and they’ve also been in touch since by text.”

I'm not sure it's accurate to say they're actually "talking" but hey, texting is at least a start. Read the full report here.

"Rock & Roll Star"

A new report in the Guardian claims the Stone Roses have been working on some new material recently.  The source of the info is Chris Coghill, who has been working on a film about the band's legendary 1990 Spike Island gig.  Coghill, who played Bez from Happy Mondays in 24 Hour Party People, claims the Stone Roses have "at least three or four" new tracks recorded.

The news shouldn't be all that surprising - during the band's press conference last October they announced they'd be releasing new material, plus in December they inked a deal with two record labels (Universal and Columbia.)  No word on when we'll hear these alleged new recordings, though perhaps they'll throw something new into their live set when their reunion tour kicks off next month.
