The film Shoplifters Of The World will be coming to screens in the U.S. next year.

According to a report in Variety, RLJE Films (owned by AMC) picked up the rights to the Smiths-inspired film. Shoplifters Of The World is a comedy-drama based on real events that took place in 1987 after The Smiths broke up. The film follows a group of four friends devastated after learning The Smiths had suddenly disbanded. During the same twenty-four hour period, a Denver radio station was taken hostage by an armed Smiths fan grief-stricken over the implosion of the legendary band - the impassioned fan held the DJ at gunpoint and forcing him to play nothing but Smiths songs all night.

Shoplifters Of The World was written and directed by Stephen Kijak and features 20 songs from The Smiths. According to Variety the film is expected to premiere in theaters "early next year."

RLJE Films acquisitions officer Mark Ward:

"With Shoplifters of the World Stephen Kijak brilliantly transports us right back to the 1980s with the amazing look of the film and the unbelievable soundtrack. We are incredibly excited to bring this story and these great performances to U.S. audiences in 2021."

It appears Morrissey approves of the production -- a link to Variety's story is posted on Morrissey Central.
